Swansea sits at the gateway to the Gower Peninsula, which in 1956 became the first area in the United Kingdom to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This coastal city in south Wales blends sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and green valleys within easy reach of a single base. From Swansea, the drive west to Rhossili Bay is just 24 kilometres, while heading east to Cardiff covers roughly 70 kilometres along the M4 corridor. Explore the National Waterfront Museum on the marina, walk the promenade curving around Swansea Bay, or venture inland to the Brecon Beacons for waterfalls and mountain trails. The Mumbles, a seaside village at the southern tip of the bay, offers an iconic Victorian pier and independent shops worth a wander. Travelling by campervan gives you the freedom to park up near the coast one evening and wake among rolling hills the next morning. A motorhome provides extra space for families wanting to combine beach days with longer excursions into the Welsh countryside. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Swansea area, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach often means more flexible pick-up points and personal tips from people who know Swansea and its surroundings inside out.
Swansea enjoys a long touring season from April through to October. The Gower Walking Festival, usually held each June, is a great reason to time your visit for early summer when daylight stretches well past nine in the evening. September brings the Swansea International Festival, filling the city with music and performance. Campsite availability across the Gower Peninsula is strongest in spring and early autumn, making these months ideal for a campervan trip without needing to book weeks ahead. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing can be gentler outside the school holiday window, so hiring a motorhome in May or late September often works out well for your budget.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Loop around the Gower Peninsula from Swansea, taking in Rhossili Bay and its dramatic headland, the salt marshes at Llanrhidian, and the surf beach at Caswell Bay. Around 80 km of coastal and inland lanes, ideal for a compact campervan. Allow three to four days to enjoy the walking trails and local seafood.
Head west from Swansea through Llanelli and on to the National Botanic Garden of Wales near Llanarthne. Continue to Carreg Cennen Castle perched above the Tywi Valley. This 120 km route suits a motorhome and offers quiet campsites among farmland, with three to five days giving you time to explore at a relaxed pace.
From Swansea, drive west to Tenby, then follow the Pembrokeshire coastline through Saundersfoot, Manorbier, and St Davids, Britain's smallest city. At roughly 280 km, this five- to seven-day campervan trip takes in cliff-top paths, boat trips to Skomer Island, and some of the best coastal campsites in Wales.
Drive north from Swansea to the Brecon Beacons, visiting the waterfalls at Ystradfellte and the market town of Brecon before crossing into the Black Mountains near Hay-on-Wye. This 350 km loop over five to seven days is well suited to a motorhome, with several serviced campsites along the route.
Circle from Swansea east to Cardiff, north through the Valleys to Merthyr Tydfil, then west via the Brecon Beacons and Carmarthen before returning along the coast. At around 500 km over seven to ten days, this route covers castles, industrial heritage, and beaches. A campervan handles the mix of motorway and country roads with ease.
Follow the Wales Coast Path route from Swansea north through Aberystwyth and up to Caernarfon, then return via Snowdonia and mid-Wales. This 650 km motorhome adventure over ten to fourteen days passes through Cardigan Bay, Harlech Castle, and the Elan Valley reservoirs, offering a full picture of Welsh landscapes and culture.

Swansea and the surrounding area offer a good spread of campsites, from beachside pitches on the Gower Peninsula to sheltered inland spots near the Brecon Beacons. Many sites provide electric hook-ups, waste disposal points, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Coastal sites tend to fill earlier in summer, so booking ahead is worthwhile if you want a sea-view pitch. Inland options often have more space and quieter surroundings, perfect for families or couples looking for a restful base.
The M4 motorway is the main route into Swansea from the east, connecting the city to Cardiff and the Severn crossings into England. There are no tolls on the M4 within Wales since the Severn Bridge charges were abolished in 2018. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. The A4067 heads north from Swansea into the Brecon Beacons, with some narrower stretches through valleys that require care in larger vehicles. Rest areas and service stations are well spaced along the M4, though fuel stops become less frequent on rural roads across the Gower.
Everything was perfect with Ricardo. Communication was easy, and they have been very respectful and arrangeant. I truly recommand to rent your car to them.
Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.
We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.
We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
Excellent experience. Owner contacted us in advance to arrange a time and pick up location. Owner went into detail at pick up of onboard services and how to use correctly.
André e Raquel são ótimos anfitriões. Eles responderam rapidamente todas as nossas dúvidas e foram muito corretos em tudo que combinamos. Voltaremos a manter contato com eles em uma proxima oportunidade.
