Why hire a campervan or motorhome in New Zealand

New Zealand — a country worth exploring

New Zealand's Milford Sound, carved by glaciers over thousands of years, stretches 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea and receives around 182 rainy days a year — making it one of the wettest inhabited places on Earth. This remarkable country spans two main islands connected by the Interislander ferry across the Cook Strait, a crossing of roughly 92 kilometres. From the geothermal pools of Rotorua on the North Island to the dramatic peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park on the South Island, the landscape shifts constantly. Auckland to Wellington covers approximately 645 kilometres along State Highway 1, while Christchurch to Queenstown is around 480 kilometres through the Canterbury Plains and into the Southern Alps. Along the way, you can explore Tongariro National Park, home to New Zealand's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, or wander through the glowworm-lit Waitomo Caves. The country's well-maintained roads and freedom camping culture make it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across New Zealand, choosing from a wide range of vehicles — from compact campervans for solo travellers to spacious motorhomes for families. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, better value, and the chance to get insider tips from people who know the roads best.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in New Zealand is during the summer months from December to February, when temperatures sit comfortably between 20°C and 30°C and daylight stretches well past 9pm. January brings the World Buskers Festival in Christchurch, while February hosts the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival in Blenheim. Shoulder season from October to November and March to April offers quieter roads and lower prices through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, where owners often adjust rates outside peak periods. Book early for summer trips, as New Zealand is a popular destination during the holiday season.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in New Zealand

New Zealand has no toll motorways for general traffic, with only a few short toll roads such as the Tauranga Eastern Link and the Northern Gateway near Auckland, payable online within five days. The open road speed limit is 100 km/h, which applies to motorhomes and campervans under 3,500 kg. Heavier vehicles are limited to 90 km/h. Many routes are single-carriageway roads, particularly on the South Island, so allow extra time for winding mountain passes like Arthur's Pass and the Haast Pass. Rest areas with dump stations are well signposted along major highways.

Very good time using the van in the dolomites. Easy to drive and a lot of good, well thoughts features inside the van. The van was available few hours later than expected due to a clutch replacement but Claudio was kind to refund us for the time we didn't use the van.

Alejandro and his girlfriend were the perfect tenants, just the kind everyone hopes for. They were friendly, communication was easy and everything was quickly agreed upon, and they returned the van in perfect condition. I hope we meet again someday, if not in Slovenia, then in Barcelona :) Best regards and all the best for the future, Maja and Gašper

We spent a wonderful week traveling through the Basque Country, Asturias, and Cantabria in Edurne’s camper. Communication with Edurne was excellent—she answered all our questions well in advance of the trip. The van itself was perfect. Driving the T4 is a real pleasure, and the camper is thoughtfully equipped with kitchen essentials, curtains, blankets, and everything you need for a safe trip. We wholeheartedly recommend the van. Thank you for everything, Edurne!
