The North Island offers a wide network of campsites ranging from beachfront freedom camping spots to fully serviced holiday parks. Coastal sites on the Coromandel and Northland coasts provide sea-breeze pitches, while inland parks near Rotorua and Taupō often feature geothermal hot pools on-site. Most holiday parks cater to both campervans and motorhomes with powered sites, dump stations, shared kitchens, and hot showers. Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites in the North Island give access to more remote bush and lakeside settings.
The North Island has no toll motorways for general traffic, though the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland charges a small fee payable online within five days. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are capped at 90 km/h on the open road, while lighter campervans follow the standard 100 km/h limit. State highways are mostly two-lane roads with regular passing lanes. Rest areas with dump stations and fresh water are well signposted, particularly along State Highway 1. Watch for one-lane bridges in rural areas — give-way rules are clearly marked.

We had an amazing experience with both the campervan and its owner, Alvaro! Alvaro is a super friendly, cheerful, and helpful young guy. He personally picked us up from the airport and gave us some fantastic recommendations for beautiful places to visit in Mallorca, including hidden gems that only a local would know about. He also suggested some great local restaurants where we could try traditional Mallorcan specialties. After we returned the campervan, he was kind enough to drop us off at a location of our choice. Communication with him throughout the entire trip was excellent — easy, friendly, and really helpful. The campervan itself is very cozy, comfortable, and well-equipped. It has everything you need for a wonderful getaway for two people. Fuel consumption is around 8–10 L/100 km, which is perfectly reasonable for this type of vehicle. We were extremely happy with the whole experience and would definitely rent from Alvaro again! Thank you so much for everything, Alvaro! 😊🚐☀️
