Why hire a campervan or motorhome in North Island

North Island — a region worth exploring

New Zealand's North Island stretches across 113,729 square kilometres and is home to the country's largest city, Auckland, where roughly a third of the national population lives. From the geothermal wonderland of Wai-O-Tapu near Rotorua to the volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the island packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a single road trip. The drive from Auckland to Wellington covers approximately 645 km along State Highway 1, while the route from Tauranga to Napier runs about 320 km through lush farmland and the Kaimai Range. Surfers flock to Raglan's left-hand break on the west coast, and the Coromandel Peninsula offers golden-sand beaches backed by native bush. Further north, the Bay of Islands provides sheltered harbours ideal for overnight parking with a sea view. The North Island's roads are generally well-maintained two-lane highways, though winding coastal and hill sections reward a slower pace — perfect for a campervan adventure. Whether you fancy a compact campervan for nimble peninsula exploring or a larger motorhome for family comfort, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across the North Island, so you can hire a vehicle that suits your plans and budget through a straightforward peer-to-peer platform.

Best time to visit

The North Island enjoys a mild maritime climate, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. Summer, from December to February, is peak season — ideal for beach stops and festivals like the Whangamata Beach Hop in late March. Winter months from June to August bring quieter roads and the chance to soak in Rotorua's hot pools without the crowds. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of October or April often means more competitive peer-to-peer pricing and wider vehicle choice. Plan ahead for the summer holidays if you want to secure your preferred motorhome or campervan, as Kiwi families also hit the road during this period.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in North Island

The North Island has no toll motorways for general traffic, though the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland charges a small fee payable online within five days. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are capped at 90 km/h on the open road, while lighter campervans follow the standard 100 km/h limit. State highways are mostly two-lane roads with regular passing lanes. Rest areas with dump stations and fresh water are well signposted, particularly along State Highway 1. Watch for one-lane bridges in rural areas — give-way rules are clearly marked.

Eric's van has everything you need. It was clean and the design was functional, and easy to convert the bed and table. The kitchen was very well equipped, and the fridge and water tap was a nice luxury for a camping trip. Communication and handover from Eric was easy, and he was helpful and fast to reply, when we had small questions along the way. Highly recommend!
