Why choose Wellington for your road trip

Wellington — a city worth exploring

Wellington sits at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island, where Cook Strait funnels winds that have earned it the title of the world's windiest city, with gusts regularly exceeding 120 km/h on exposed hilltops. The compact capital packs a remarkable cultural punch — Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum, welcomes over 1.5 million visitors each year with free entry and interactive exhibitions spanning Māori heritage, natural history and contemporary art. A short walk along the waterfront leads to Wellington Writers Walk, a sculpture trail of literary quotations set against harbour views. For panoramic perspectives, the Wellington Cable Car climbs from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden at Kelburn, a route that has been running since 1902. Theatre lovers can catch a show at Circa Theatre on the waterfront, while craft beer fans will find more than 30 breweries and taprooms scattered across the city. The Wairarapa wine region lies just 80 km to the north-east, offering pinot noir tastings among rolling hills, and the coastal town of Kāpiti sits 50 km north with its renowned bird sanctuary on Kāpiti Island. Wellington's narrow hillside streets and tight urban layout make a campervan an ideal way to base yourself centrally and then explore the wider region at your own pace. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome directly from a local owner, often picking up your vehicle in a residential neighbourhood and getting first-hand tips on the best routes, freedom camping spots and weekend escapes that only locals know about.

Best time to visit

Wellington is enjoyable year-round, though the warmer months from November to March bring settled weather ideal for exploring by campervan. The Wellington Sevens rugby tournament in January fills the city with energy, while the New Zealand Festival of the Arts in February and March showcases world-class theatre, music and dance. Booking your hire through Yescapa during the shoulder months of October or April can mean better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing from local owners. Summer is the busiest period for campsite bookings around the wider Wellington region, so planning ahead is worthwhile.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in Wellington requires some planning due to the city's hilly terrain and narrow streets. Height barriers apply in many central car parks, so checking clearance before entering is essential. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally not permitted within the central city, but dedicated motorhome stops and nearby holiday parks offer legal alternatives. Always check local council signage for time limits and vehicle size restrictions.

  • Westpac Stadium Car Park (Sky Stadium), 1km north — Large open-air car park near the waterfront with generous height clearance, suitable for campervans on event-free days.
  • Waterfront Car Park (Customhouse Quay), Adjacent to the city — Central waterfront location with some oversized vehicle bays. Check height restrictions before entry.
  • Evans Bay Marina Car Park, 3km southeast — Open parking area near the marina with space for larger vehicles and easy access to the coastal road.

My partner and I rented the motorhome for 6 days and had a great time! It had everything we needed for the trip, and we didn’t have a single issue with it. Andre was extremely responsive and helpful throughout, always quick to answer our questions and provide guidance on anything we threw his way 🙂 Highly recommended!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience with Martin’s van. We travelled through Belgium, France and Switzerland for a month and never had any issues. The van was reliable, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. Martin was excellent to deal with from start to finish. He was always quick to respond to our messages, which was especially reassuring as we were travelling all the way from Australia. He was genuinely helpful, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with. The van was supplied with everything we needed, including utensils, a table and chairs, and all the essentials for a great holiday on the road. The awning was a real bonus and was easy to set up, providing a lovely space to sit and relax. We would highly recommend Martin and his van to anyone looking to explore Europe. We had an amazing month and would happily hire from Martin again for our next adventure!
