Why choose Auckland for your road trip

Auckland — a city worth exploring

Auckland's Sky Tower rises 328 metres above the city, making it the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Spread across a narrow isthmus between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, Auckland offers a rare mix of urban energy and coastal beauty. The Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Auckland Domain houses one of New Zealand's most important collections of Māori and Pacific Island artefacts. Across the harbour, Devonport charms visitors with its Victorian architecture and views from North Head Historic Reserve. The waterfront at Viaduct Harbour is ideal for a leisurely stroll, while Rangitoto Island — a volcanic cone just a 25-minute ferry ride away — rewards hikers with panoramic views from its 260-metre summit. Hamilton lies roughly 130 km to the south, and the Coromandel Peninsula begins about 85 km to the east, both making excellent day trips or weekend escapes. Auckland's wide, well-maintained motorways and generous parking areas make it a comfortable base for exploring by campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Auckland region, giving you a personal, peer-to-peer experience and the flexibility to pick up your campervan from a convenient neighbourhood rather than a distant depot.

Best time to visit

Auckland enjoys a mild, maritime climate year-round, making it a great destination in any season. Summer, from December to March, is perfect for coastal drives and beach stops — the Auckland Anniversary Weekend Regatta in late January fills the harbour with hundreds of sailing boats. Autumn brings warm days and golden light, ideal for exploring nearby wine regions by campervan. Winter is quieter, and Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitive hire rates during the off-season. The Auckland Lantern Festival, typically held in February or March, is another highlight worth planning around. Book ahead for the December–February peak to secure the best motorhome options.

Top getaways from Auckland

Auckland is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula

85km east 2–4 days

Head 85 km east from Auckland across the Hauraki Plains to reach the Coromandel Peninsula. Spend 2–4 days exploring Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own thermal pool in the sand. Freedom camping spots are limited, so book a campsite in Whitianga or Hahei early.

Auckland to Piha and the Waitākere Ranges

60km west 1–3 days

Just 60 km west of Auckland, Piha's black-sand beach and Lion Rock are iconic. Allow 1–3 days to hike the Kitekite Falls track and explore Karekare Beach nearby. Roads through the Waitākere Ranges are winding, so take it steady in your campervan and use the car park at Piha for daytime stops.

Auckland to Rotorua

160km southeast 3–6 days

Drive 160 km southeast from Auckland to Rotorua, the heart of New Zealand's geothermal region. Over 3–6 days, visit Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland for bubbling mud pools and colourful hot springs. Several motorhome-friendly holiday parks sit close to the lake, offering powered sites and hot showers.

Auckland to Tauranga and Mount Maunganui

190km southeast 3–6 days

Travel 190 km southeast from Auckland to Tauranga and the golden sands of Mount Maunganui. A 3–6 day trip lets you climb Mauao for sunrise views and kayak the harbour. Campervan parking is available at the Mount Main Beach car park, and nearby holiday parks offer full hook-ups for longer stays.

Auckland to the Bay of Islands

230km north 5–8 days

Head 230 km north from Auckland to the Bay of Islands, home to 144 islands and rich Māori and colonial history. Over 5–8 days, stop at Whangārei Falls en route, then explore Paihia and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Several well-equipped holiday parks in Paihia welcome campervans and motorhomes year-round.

Auckland to Cape Reinga

350km north 5–8 days

The 350 km drive north from Auckland to Cape Reinga takes you to the very tip of the North Island. Allow 5–8 days to enjoy Ninety Mile Beach and the ancient Puketi Kauri Forest along the way. Fill up on fuel in Kaitaia — services are sparse beyond this point — and use designated campervan overnight areas.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in central Auckland requires a bit of planning. Most inner-city car parks have height restrictions of around 2.1 metres, so check clearance before entering. Overnight parking on public streets is generally permitted unless signage states otherwise, but always confirm local rules. For motorhomes and campervans, using a holiday park or dedicated facility outside the CBD is often the most practical option.

  • Kumeu Showgrounds, 25km northwest — A spacious open-air site about 25 km northwest of the CBD, often used for events and offering generous clearance for larger vehicles. Check availability ahead of time as access may vary during show days.
  • Victoria Park Car Park, 1km north — Located on the edge of the CBD, this multi-level car park has limited height clearance. Suitable for smaller campervans only — confirm the 2.1 m limit before entry.
  • Downtown Car Park, Adjacent to the city — A central Auckland facility close to the ferry terminal. Height-restricted, so best for compact vans. Handy for day trips to Rangitoto or Devonport by ferry.

Persone molto corrette, responsabili e piacevoli: li raccomando vivamente! Sarà un piacere rivedervi il prossimo anno. A presto! 🚐☀️

Elvira was super responsive, friendly and helpfull! We had a great experience going around Mallorca with the bus. The bus had everything what we need. Just be aware the bed length is 160cm as listed. But Elvira also has another bus with longer beds if wanted! Highly recommended.
