Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland — a region worth exploring

Northern Ireland's Causeway Coastal Route stretches 120 miles from Belfast to Londonderry, regularly ranked among the world's most spectacular driving roads. This compact region packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a small area, making it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome. From the hexagonal basalt columns of the Giant's Causeway to the eerie beauty of the Dark Hedges — the beech tree avenue made famous by Game of Thrones — there is something remarkable around every bend. Belfast to the Giant's Causeway is roughly 100 km, while the drive from Enniskillen to Newcastle covers about 170 km, crossing from the lakelands of County Fermanagh to the foot of the Mourne Mountains. The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark offers underground river tours through 300-million-year-old limestone chambers, and Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge connects the mainland to a tiny island used by salmon fishermen for centuries. Northern Ireland's roads are generally well-maintained and uncrowded, with plenty of laybys and scenic pull-ins suited to larger vehicles. Coastal routes, mountain passes in the Mournes, and quiet lakeshore lanes all reward a slower pace of travel. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Northern Ireland, choosing from a range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive pricing, and personal tips from people who know the region best.

Best time to visit

Northern Ireland is a rewarding destination from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and wildflower-covered coastlines, perfect for campervan touring. The Belfast International Arts Festival runs each October, offering world-class performances across the city. Summer sees events like the Auld Lammas Fair in Ballycastle each August, one of Ireland's oldest traditional markets. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means better rates outside peak July and August, when you can still enjoy mild temperatures and quieter roads across Northern Ireland. Plan ahead for popular coastal spots in summer to secure your preferred pitch.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has no toll roads, so you can travel freely without worrying about charges. The motorway network is limited but efficient, with the M1 connecting Belfast to Dungannon and the M2 running north towards Antrim. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 60 mph on dual carriageways and 50 mph on single carriageway roads. Many rural routes in Northern Ireland are narrow with passing places, so a smaller campervan can be easier to manoeuvre. Rest areas and service stations are well spaced along major routes, though less frequent on country roads.

We had such a wonderful experience renting Ivan’s camper van for a week! Honestly, everything was even better than we expected. We had absolutely everything we needed — and then some. ❤️ The van was super clean, very well equipped, comfortable, and really performant. One of the things we loved most was the solar setup. We never needed to plug the van into electricity during our trip because the solar panels and battery system worked amazingly well — somehow, the battery just never seemed to run out! It made everything so easy and gave us a lot of freedom during our trip. All the practical things were also incredibly straightforward. Filling up with fresh water, emptying the grey water, and taking care of all the little camper-van things were really easy once Ivan explained everything to us. He made sure we had everything we needed before setting off, and it was clear that he genuinely cared about us having a good experience. And Ivan himself was was incredibly friendly, kind, helpful, and easy to communicate with. He checked in on us after a few days just to make sure everything was going well — not in an intrusive way at all, but in that really nice way where you can tell someone genuinely cares and wants to know that you’re having a good time. 🥰 We had quite a few questions along the way because there’s naturally a lot of information to remember when you first get a camper van, and every time we messaged him, he replied super quickly and was incredibly helpful. He also gave us great recommendations about places to visit and where to go, which made the whole trip even better. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The van was amazing, everything was easy and well thought-out, and Ivan was such a lovely host. If you’re planning a camper van trip along the north coast of Spain, we would absolutely recommend renting from Ivan. You’ll be in very good hands! We would 100% do it again. 🚐☀️❤️

Our hire experience was very smooth, the vehicle was exactly as described and the little extras provided by Jackeline & Juan made us feel welcomed & made the first day or so easier as we got used to van life. J&J were available to answer any questions we had during our trip and though we didn’t speak each other’s native languages we managed perfectly to communicate with AI & the instructive videos provided. Collection & return were easy. All in all a fabulous experience, one we would repeat and highly recommend. 5 Stars all round!
