Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Canton of Zurich

Canton of Zurich — a region worth exploring

The Canton of Zürich sits at the heart of northern Switzerland, where the River Limmat flows from Lake Zürich through the country's largest city before joining the Aare further west. Zürich's Old Town, known as the Altstadt, stretches along both banks of the Limmat and is home to the twin-towered Grossmünster church, dating back to the 12th century. From the city centre, it is roughly 35 km south-east to the town of Rapperswil-Jona on the upper lake, and about 50 km north to the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen — Europe's largest plain waterfall by volume. Between these landmarks, the canton unfolds into the rolling hills of the Zürcher Oberland, the vineyards around Winterthur, and the peaceful shores of Greifensee and Pfäffikersee. This variety of landscapes makes the Canton of Zürich ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome, with well-maintained roads connecting lakeside towns, forested valleys, and open farmland. Compact distances mean you can move between very different settings in under an hour. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Canton of Zürich, choosing from a range of vehicle types to match your travel plans. Whether you want a nimble campervan for vineyard lanes or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer family trip, peer-to-peer sharing gives you flexibility and a personal touch that traditional rental agencies rarely offer.

Best time to visit

The Canton of Zürich is enjoyable from late spring through to autumn. June to September brings warm days perfect for swimming in Lake Zürich and exploring the countryside. The Zürich Festival (Zürcher Festspiele) runs each June and July, filling the city with opera, theatre, and concerts. In mid-September, the Knabenschiessen — a traditional shooting competition and funfair — draws locals and visitors alike. Summer is peak season, so we recommend booking your campervan on Yescapa well ahead to secure the best choice. Shoulder months like May and October offer quieter roads and lower peer-to-peer hire prices, with mild conditions still suited to motorhome travel across the canton.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Canton of Zurich

Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40 per year) for all vehicles using national motorways, including campervans and motorhomes. The A1 and A3 are the main motorways crossing the Canton of Zürich, linking the city to Winterthur, Bern, and Basel. The general speed limit on Swiss motorways is 120 km/h, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h. On cantonal roads outside built-up areas, the limit is 80 km/h. Rest areas with facilities for larger vehicles are well spaced along the A1 corridor. Keep in mind that some older tunnels and narrow mountain-adjacent roads may have height or width restrictions — always check signage before entering.

Had a really great trip thanks to Mireia and her van! The whole process was great, communication was brilliant throughout, and the van had everything I needed. Mireia was amazing to deal with and went above and beyond to make sure everything with the van and my trip went smoothly. Would rent again in a heartbeat!

We had a great experience with Sharon. She was friendly, helpful and very transparent, clearly showing us all the existing damages during pickup. The camper was well equipped, and her list of places to visit and overnight spots was extremely helpful. The drop-off was also very smooth, and Sharon was flexible with the return time. We really enjoyed our trip and would definitely recommend her! 😊

Pedro was fantastic to rent the van from. The van was an old battler, got the job done when needed. Simple set up but everything you need to live the Portugal van life. Would recommend Pedro and any of his vans.

We absolutely loved Andrea's campervan! It offers incredible value for money, had everything we needed, and we could completely rely on it out on the road. Andrea herself is the absolute sweetest and was always available to help with whatever we needed—even going above and beyond beyond just campervan matters. Highly recommend!
