Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Italy

Italy — a country worth exploring

Italy stretches over 1,200 kilometres from the Alpine peaks of the Dolomites to the sun-soaked shores of Sicily, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore on four wheels. The Amalfi Coast road, a 50-kilometre ribbon carved into cliffs south of Naples, is regularly listed among the world's great drives. Head north and you can cross from Milan to Venice in roughly 270 kilometres, passing through Verona and the southern edge of Lake Garda along the way. Further south, the trulli houses of Alberobello and the Baroque towns of the Val di Noto in Sicily offer a completely different character. Italy's network of well-maintained roads connects bustling cities, quiet hilltop villages, and long stretches of coastline, giving you the freedom to shape each day around what you feel like doing. Whether you want to park beside a vineyard in Tuscany or wake up near a volcanic beach on the Aeolian Islands, a campervan lets you cover ground at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners spread across the country — from Turin to Palermo — choosing the vehicle that fits your group, your route, and your budget.

Best time to visit

Italy welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring, from April to June, is ideal for touring Tuscany and the lakes region, when wildflowers line the roadsides and campsites across the country open their full facilities. Summer is perfect for coastal routes and island hopping — the Giro d'Italia cycling race in May often sparks road-trip inspiration along its route. Autumn brings the grape harvest and truffle season, especially in Piedmont and Umbria, while the Venice Film Festival in late August and early September adds cultural buzz. Winter is a fine time to explore southern Italy and Sicily at a relaxed pace. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive rates outside peak months, and you can hire a campervan from owners in every corner of Italy.

The best road trips in Italy

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Amalfi Coast Loop

230 km 3–6 days

Start in Naples and wind south along the legendary SS163 to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, then loop back through the Lattari Mountains. At around 230 km, this route suits a campervan perfectly — narrow coastal roads reward smaller vehicles. Allow time for a ferry to Capri and fresh seafood stops in Cetara.

The Tuscan Hill Towns Trail

280 km 3–6 days

From Florence, head south through the Chianti wine region to Siena, then on to Montepulciano and Pienza in the Val d'Orcia. This 280 km route rolls through cypress-lined roads and offers plenty of agriturismi with campervan-friendly parking. A motorhome works well on the wider sections between towns.

The Dolomites Alpine Circuit

450 km 5–8 days

Loop through the Italian Dolomites starting from Bolzano, passing Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and the Sella Pass. At 450 km, this route takes you through dramatic mountain scenery with well-equipped campsites at altitude. Roads are wide enough for motorhomes, though some passes close in winter.

The Puglia Coastal Drive

400 km 5–8 days

From Bari, follow the Adriatic coast south to Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, then inland to the trulli of Alberobello and the white city of Ostuni. Continue to Lecce and the beaches of the Salento peninsula. This 400 km route through Italy's heel is flat and easy for any vehicle, with campsites close to the sea.

The Sicilian Grand Tour

700 km 7–11 days

Circle Sicily starting from Palermo, visiting the Greek temples of Agrigento, the Baroque towns of Ragusa and Noto, Mount Etna near Catania, and the coastal resort of Taormina. At 700 km, this Italy road trip covers the island's highlights. Campervan-friendly aires and campsites dot the route, and ferries connect from the mainland at Messina.

The Italian Lakes to Sardinia

900 km 10–15 days

Begin at Lake Como, drive south through Parma and the Cinque Terre coast, then catch a ferry from Livorno to Olbia in Sardinia. Explore the Costa Smeralda, the nuraghi of Barumini, and the cliffs of Cala Gonone. This 900 km route across Italy combines mainland culture with island wilderness. A motorhome is ideal for the longer stretches, while a campervan handles Sardinia's narrower roads.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Italy

Italy's motorway network, the autostrada, uses a toll system on most major routes. You pay at exit barriers using cash, card, or a Telepass electronic device. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways, lower than the standard car limits. The A1 Autostrada del Sole, running from Milan to Naples, is the country's main north–south artery and is well equipped with service areas every 30–50 km. Mountain sections, particularly through the Apennines and on Alpine passes, may include tunnels and steep gradients — keep an eye on vehicle height restrictions before entering tunnels. A valid warning triangle and reflective vest are required on board.

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
