Why hire a campervan or motorhome in France

France — a country worth exploring

France spans over 640,000 square kilometres, making it the largest country in the European Union by area, with landscapes ranging from the Alpine peaks of Mont Blanc at 4,808 metres to the lavender fields of Provence and the Atlantic surf beaches of Biarritz. The country offers an extraordinary network of well-maintained roads — driving from Paris to Marseille covers roughly 775 kilometres, while the route from Bordeaux to Strasbourg stretches around 870 kilometres, crossing dramatically different terrain along the way. Iconic landmarks like the Pont du Gard aqueduct, the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, the Loire Valley châteaux, and the volcanic Chaîne des Puys in Auvergne reward those who travel at their own pace. Coastal routes along Brittany and Normandy are well suited to campervans, while the wide motorways connecting major cities make motorhome travel comfortable and straightforward. France also has one of Europe's densest networks of aires de service — dedicated rest and overnight stops designed specifically for touring vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners spread across every corner of France, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your trip. Whether you want a compact van for Provençal back roads or a fully equipped family motorhome for a cross-country adventure, peer-to-peer sharing means more choice and a more personal start to your journey.

Best time to visit

France welcomes road trippers year-round, though May to October is the most popular window for campervan travel. The Fête de la Musique on 21 June fills every town with free open-air concerts, while the Feria de Nîmes in late May brings lively celebrations to the south. Summer means long daylight hours and full access to mountain passes like the Col du Galibier in the Alps. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and comfortable temperatures, ideal for exploring wine regions during harvest season. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes shoulder-season trips especially good value — book a few weeks ahead for the best selection of motorhomes and campervans across France.

The best road trips in France

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Grand Tour of Southern France

750 km 10–15 days

This 750 km journey from Toulouse to Nice traces the Mediterranean arc through Carcassonne, Narbonne, Montpellier, the Camargue wetlands, and the Calanques near Marseille. Motorhomes have ample space on the wide southern autoroutes, while coastal detours offer charming harbour towns. Ten to fourteen days allows for beach days, flamingo-spotting in the Camargue, and exploring the hilltop villages of the Var.

The Normandy Heritage Trail

250 km 3–6 days

Starting in Rouen, this 250 km route through Normandy takes you past the Bayeux Tapestry Museum and the D-Day landing beaches at Omaha and Utah before reaching Mont-Saint-Michel. Quiet coastal roads suit campervans perfectly, and aires de service are plentiful along the way. Allow three to five days to explore the cider farms and fishing ports at a relaxed pace.

The Provence Lavender Loop

280 km 3–6 days

This 280 km circuit from Avignon winds through the Luberon villages of Gordes and Roussillon, crosses the lavender plateau of Valensole, and returns via Aix-en-Provence. Best enjoyed from June to August when the fields are in bloom. The roads are well-paved and manageable in a motorhome, with plenty of farm stops for local produce and honey along the route.

The Atlantic Coast Discovery

450 km 5–8 days

Covering 450 km from Nantes to Biarritz, this route follows France's Atlantic seaboard through La Rochelle, the Île de Ré, and the Arcachon Bay with its famous Dune du Pilat. Campervan-friendly campsites line the coast, and flat terrain makes driving easy. Five to seven days lets you enjoy seafood markets, surf towns, and pine-forested cycling paths between stops.

The Loire Valley Château Route

400 km 5–8 days

This 400 km route from Orléans to Angers follows the Loire River past the grand châteaux of Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, and Villandry. The valley's gentle, flat roads are ideal for motorhomes of all sizes. Vineyards producing Vouvray and Sancerre wines offer tastings along the way. Plan five to seven days to combine cultural visits with riverside picnic stops and local markets.

The Route des Grandes Alpes

600 km 7–11 days

Stretching 600 km from Thonon-les-Bains on Lake Geneva to Menton on the Mediterranean, this legendary route crosses 16 Alpine passes including the Col du Galibier and Col de l'Iseran. Best suited to campervans due to narrow mountain sections, it rewards with views of the Écrins and Mercantour national parks. Seven to ten days gives time for hiking detours and lakeside overnight stops.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in France

Most French motorways (autoroutes) are toll roads, and you can pay at péage booths by card or cash, or use a Liber-t electronic tag for quicker passage. Key routes like the A6 (Paris to Lyon) and A7 (Lyon to Marseille) are well-equipped with rest areas every 20 to 30 kilometres. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard cars at 130 km/h on motorways, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Height barriers at some toll plazas and car parks can be tight for taller vehicles, so check clearance before entering. France also has a growing network of free dual carriageways, especially in Brittany, offering toll-free alternatives for longer trips.

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
