Almería's Alcazaba fortress, built in 955 AD by Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III, ranks as the second largest Moorish citadel in Spain after the Alhambra. Perched above the Mediterranean coast in southeastern Andalusia, this sun-drenched city blends centuries of history with a landscape unlike anywhere else on the Iberian Peninsula. The Cathedral of Almería, constructed in the 16th century as both a place of worship and a defensive stronghold against pirate raids, stands in the heart of the old town. Nearby, the Museo de Almería houses archaeological finds spanning from the Neolithic period to the Islamic era. Film enthusiasts will recognise the Tabernas Desert, just 30 km north, where spaghetti westerns were shot in the 1960s and 70s — today you can visit Mini Hollywood and Fort Bravo for a taste of that cinematic past. The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, roughly 30 km east, offers volcanic cliffs, secluded coves, and salt flats that feel wonderfully remote. Driving a campervan along the coastal roads here is a pleasure, with wide routes connecting fishing villages and quiet beaches. Almería also sits 200 km east of Málaga and 170 km southwest of Murcia, making it a natural base for longer tours across southern Spain. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in Almería, giving you insider tips and a personal touch that makes the whole trip feel more connected to the place.
Almería enjoys over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, so every season has something to offer. Spring is ideal for exploring Cabo de Gata on foot or by campervan, with wildflowers carpeting the coastal paths. The Feria de Almería in late August fills the city with live music, flamenco, and street food — a brilliant time to be parked up nearby. Autumn brings comfortable temperatures for driving through the Tabernas Desert and surrounding sierras. Winter remains mild along the coast, perfect for quieter trips. Book through Yescapa to find competitive peer-to-peer prices, especially outside the summer peak when local owners often offer great value on motorhome hire.
Almería is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 30 km east from Almería into the volcanic landscapes of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Stop at Playa de los Muertos for a swim and drive on to the fishing village of Las Negras. San José has campervan-friendly parking near the beach. Allow two or three days to explore the salt flats at Las Salinas and the lighthouse at Cabo de Gata.
Drive 55 km northeast from Almería along the coast to Mojácar, a whitewashed hilltop town with sweeping sea views. Explore the old quarter on foot and relax at Mojácar Playa below. Nearby Garrucha is worth a detour for fresh seafood at the port. Several campsites along this stretch offer full hook-ups for motorhomes.
Travel 130 km west from Almería through the Alpujarras foothills to reach Granada. Visit the Alhambra palace and wander the Albaicín quarter. On the way, stop at Guadix to see its remarkable cave houses. Roads through the Sierra Nevada are well-maintained and campervan-friendly, with designated rest areas along the A-92 motorway.
Head 160 km northeast from Almería to Murcia, crossing the border into the Region of Murcia. Stop at Águilas for its castle and beaches, then continue to Cartagena to explore the Roman Theatre and the naval port. Murcia's cathedral and tapas scene make a rewarding final stop. Campervan parking is available near the Río Segura riverbank.
Follow the coast 200 km west from Almería to Málaga, passing through Adra, Almuñécar, and Nerja along the way. The Balcón de Europa viewpoint in Nerja and the Cuevas de Nerja caves are essential stops. Málaga itself offers the Picasso Museum and the Alcazaba fortress. Coastal roads are wide and well-suited to motorhome travel throughout.
Set off 350 km southwest from Almería towards Cádiz for a grand Andalusian road trip. Pass through Málaga and the white villages of Ronda and Arcos de la Frontera. Cádiz rewards you with its seafront promenade and the Torre Tavira camera obscura. Plan stops at campsites near Ronda, where pitches overlook the famous gorge and the Puente Nuevo bridge.

The area around Almería offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Along the Cabo de Gata coast you will find sites with sea views and direct beach access, while inland options near the Tabernas Desert provide a quieter setting. Most campsites feature electric hook-ups, showers, toilets, and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Several also include swimming pools, Wi-Fi, and on-site shops, making longer stays comfortable and easy to organise.

We had a amazing time discovering beautiful Andalusia in Antonio's campervan. It's easy to see that he put a lot of love and care into building it. The van has everything you need. Pick up and drop off was very comfortable and Antonio was always quick to respond when we had a question. Thanks a lot!
We had a really great time with Milka and the team. Very friendly people, fast at responding to all our questions and helped with our needs. Only giving 4 stars to Mylka because we had small issues here and there along the way but nothing that it won't be solved for the next trip. 100% recommended!!!
My experience renting the van from Angelly was fantastic from start to finish. Angelly was kind, responsive, and incredibly helpful in making the whole journey smooth and stress-free. The van was exactly as described, comfortable, well-equipped, and perfect for the trip. I truly loved everything about the van and the overall experience. I would absolutely recommend renting from Angelly and would happily do it again myself.
Una casa rodante muy bien equipada. Muy cómoda y fácil de manejar. Guillermo estuvo atento a cualquier consulta y duda que tenía. Muy recomendable
Very nice experience, in our first time in a Camper van. Very good service of Indie Campers at Elewijt (Brussels). Good and very clean van.
We had overall an amazing experience with the campervan. We drove from lyon towards the south of france enjoying the best of its landscpaes and nature park experiences. The owner was very helpful and friendly, she was always there to help us out with whatever we needed, and also her mom was very kind to us. They were very hospitable.
