Portugal's coastline stretches over 1,794 kilometres from the rugged cliffs of the Algarve to the wild Atlantic beaches of the Minho region, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore on four wheels. Start in Lisbon, where the iconic Belém Tower stands at the edge of the Tagus estuary, then head 300 km south to Cape St Vincent, the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe. From Porto, the Douro Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards — is just 120 km east along the river. Further north, Peneda-Gerês National Park offers granite peaks, ancient oak forests and winding mountain roads that reward patient drivers. Along the central Silver Coast, the medieval walled town of Óbidos and the surf capital of Nazaré sit barely 20 km apart, giving you culture and ocean in a single afternoon. Portugal's compact size means you can cross the country in a few hours, yet every region feels distinct — from the cork-oak plains of the Alentejo to the lush green valleys of the Azores. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners spread across the country, choosing from a wide range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style. Whether you want a compact campervan for coastal lanes or a fully equipped motorhome for a family adventure, peer-to-peer sharing keeps costs fair and puts local knowledge at your fingertips.
Portugal welcomes road trippers comfortably from April through October. Spring is ideal for the Algarve's wildflower season, while June brings Lisbon's Festas de Santo António — a city-wide celebration with parades, grilled sardines and street music. September and October offer warm days along the Silver Coast with quieter campsites and easier bookings. Summer remains the most popular season, so reserving your campervan early through Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles at competitive peer-to-peer rates. In winter, the mild southern coast around Faro still sees plenty of sunshine, making Portugal a genuine year-round destination for motorhome travel.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Drive from Porto into the Douro Valley and on to Trás-os-Montes. Visit the wine terraces at Pinhão, the historic town of Lamego and the Alvão Natural Park. This 350 km route follows winding roads with panoramic views — a campervan handles the curves with ease. Campsites along the Douro offer views over Portugal's famous vineyard landscape.
Start in Lisbon and head north along the Costa de Prata through Óbidos, Nazaré and Coimbra to Aveiro. This 400 km route links medieval towns, surf beaches and the canals of Aveiro. Campsites with full hook-ups for motorhomes appear regularly along the way. The University of Coimbra and the famous waves at Nazaré are highlights of this Portugal itinerary.
Cross Portugal from Faro in the south to Viana do Castelo in the north — roughly 600 km through the entire country. The route passes through the Algarve, Alentejo, Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto, covering coastal scenery, open plains and river valleys in a single trip. Campsites and service areas are available along the full length, making it a flexible journey by campervan or motorhome.
Explore Portugal's green north from Porto through Guimarães, Braga, the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the coast to Caminha. This 550 km route passes through dense forests, historic cities and follows the River Minho along the Spanish border. Campsites within Peneda-Gerês offer a true nature experience. The route suits all vehicle types and reveals a side of Portugal that many travellers overlook.
Start in Faro and follow the coastline west to Sagres. Along the way, discover the Benagil sea caves, the cliffs near Lagos and the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This 200 km route is ideal for a campervan, with plenty of coastal campsites dotted along Portugal's southern shore.
Explore the Alentejo from Évora, passing the Almendres Cromlech, the hilltop castle of Marvão and the wine estates around Estremoz. This 250 km loop winds through rolling plains and olive groves. Wide country roads and quiet campsites make it a relaxed motorhome route through one of Portugal's least hurried regions.

Portugal offers a wide choice of campsites, from coastal spots with direct beach access to peaceful inland sites set among cork oaks and olive groves. Many campsites provide pitches with electrical hook-ups and water connections for motorhomes, alongside more compact areas suited to campervans. Sanitary facilities, Wi-Fi and small shops are standard across most sites in Portugal.
Portugal's motorway network (autoestradas, prefixed with 'A') covers the country well, connecting Lisbon to Porto via the A1 in around three hours. Most motorways use electronic tolling — you will need a Via Verde transponder or purchase a prepaid toll card at border crossings and post offices. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads, while vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits of 120 km/h and 100 km/h respectively. Rest areas with fuel, parking and basic facilities appear regularly along major routes. Some older national roads (estradas nacionais) in mountainous areas like the Serra da Estrela can be narrow, so plan your route if you are driving a larger vehicle.
Great camper with all the necessary bits to enjoy off grid or plug in. Naiara and Miguel were very helpful and managed to communicate well with us, even though we didn't speak Spanish. They were extremely kind and considerate throughout the trip and responded quickly to any messages or queries. Llanes is a beautiful place to start your journey- we went up to Somiedo, in the mountains, and then spent a few days back by the sea.
If you’re looking for the perfect camper van, look no further! Sylvia’s van exceeded all of our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly comfortable, and equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly need. You can immediately tell how much care and attention Sylvia puts into making sure her guests have the best possible experience. What really made the difference was Sylvia herself. She was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and always quick to respond, making us feel supported from the moment we booked until the end of our trip. Thanks to her amazing van, we had an unforgettable adventure and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We would happily rent from Sylvia again and recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for a reliable host and a fantastic camper van.
I loved tripping around the island with this van. It is equipped with many accessories as described, and some basic food condiments to get you started. Sleeping was comfortable, and handling the van itself too!
Jack and his girlfriend were amazing. The communication with them was really smooth and they took really good care of the van. Would welcome them again anytime and would recommend them to anyone!
The camper van is super confortable with everything you might need along your stay. The beds are super comfy and kitchen and bathroom are very well equipped. Diana also helped us with recommendations and was super kind and attentive to our messages! Thanks Diana :)
We had a fantastic trip in Joao's campervan. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. Every window has a mosquito screen, making it very easy to ventilate the van. It is also a very pleasant and reliable vehicle; we had no trouble driving up steep roads. It is an excellent campervan for 'off-grid' travel, as it comes with hot water, a large fridge, a toilet, ample water, and a large gas supply. We also never had any issues with the electricity, thanks to the solar panel. All windows can be blacked out at night. We highly recommend Joao's campervan. Communication was smooth throughout, too! Thank you very much!
