Marseille's Vieux-Port has welcomed seafarers for over 2,600 years, making it the oldest continuously inhabited city in France. Perched along the Mediterranean coast, this port city blends ancient history with a bold, creative energy that rewards curious travellers. Wander through Le Panier, the city's oldest quarter, where narrow lanes open onto colourful street art and artisan workshops. Visit the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde for sweeping views across the rooftops and out to the Frioul archipelago. The Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) sits right on the waterfront, connected to the historic Fort Saint-Jean by a slender footbridge. A short drive south leads to the Calanques National Park, where limestone cliffs plunge into turquoise water — a spectacular stretch for coastal walks. Aix-en-Provence is just 31 km north, ideal for a half-day detour, while Cassis and its famous cape, Cap Canaille, lie only 23 km to the east. The coastal roads around Marseille are winding but well-maintained, and many viewpoints have pull-offs suitable for larger vehicles. Exploring by campervan gives you the freedom to follow the coastline at your own pace, stopping wherever the view calls. With a motorhome hired through Yescapa, you connect directly with local owners who know the best routes and overnight spots. A campervan trip here means waking up to the sound of the sea and the scent of fresh bouillabaisse drifting from the harbour.
Marseille enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, so almost any month works for a road trip. May and June are ideal — warm enough for swimming in the Calanques, with campsites still easy to book. The Fête de la Musique in June fills the Vieux-Port with free concerts, while the Festival de Marseille runs from mid-June to mid-July with dance and theatre across the city. Autumn brings the Fiesta des Suds in October, a world-music festival near the docks. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa in the shoulder months often means better peer-to-peer rates from local owners. Book a few weeks ahead for summer to secure the best choice of vehicles in Marseille.
Marseille is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Just 30 km north of Marseille, Aix-en-Provence charms with its tree-lined Cours Mirabeau and the Atelier Cézanne. Stop at the Roquefavour Aqueduct along the way. Campervan-friendly parking is available on the outskirts of Aix with regular bus links to the centre. A perfect short break from the coast.
This 65 km coastal route south-east of Marseille threads through the Calanques National Park to Cassis and on to La Ciotat. Take a boat trip from Cassis harbour to see the calanques from the water, then visit the Éden Théâtre in La Ciotat, the world's oldest cinema. Motorhome pitches are available near Cassis harbour.
Montpellier lies 120 km west of Marseille, its lively old town centred on the Place de la Comédie and the Jardin des Plantes, one of France's oldest botanical gardens. Break the journey in Aigues-Mortes, a walled medieval town in the Camargue. The flat roads through the Camargue wetlands are easy to navigate in a campervan and offer plenty of roadside stops.
Head 190 km north-west of Marseille into the Luberon, where honey-stone villages dot the hillsides. Gordes sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley, and the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque is framed by lavender fields. Visit Roussillon for its ochre cliffs and the weekly market in Apt. Many campsites in the area offer spacious motorhome pitches with full hook-ups.
Travel 280 km north-east from Marseille to reach Grenoble at the foot of the French Alps. Along the way, cross the lavender fields of the Plateau de Valensole and the Gorges du Verdon, Europe's largest canyon. In Grenoble, ride the Bastille cable car up to the hilltop fort. Mountain roads are well maintained, though allow extra time for the passes. Campsites along the route offer pitches with mountain views.
Barcelona lies 310 km west of Marseille across the Spanish border. Follow the coast through Narbonne, where you can visit the Romanesque Cathédrale Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur, and Perpignan with its Palais des Rois de Majorque. In Barcelona, explore the Sagrada Família and Park Güell. The A9 motorway is tolled but offers service areas with campervan parking. A memorable cross-border road trip connecting two Mediterranean cities.

Around Marseille you will find campsites to suit every preference — from coastal sites with direct beach access to quieter spots in the Provençal hinterland. Many offer pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh water and waste disposal stations suitable for both campervans and larger motorhomes. Several sites sit close to the Calanques National Park, giving you walking access to the trails straight from your pitch.

For larger vehicles, park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts with metro connections are a practical option. Miguel is amazing , he showed us everything we need to know about the van. The van was fully equipped and easy to support our adventures. I would definitely recommed Miguel and his van for whoever wants to roadtrip.
The van was well equipped and had everything we needed. The owner was very helpful and we had no problem at all. I would reccomend it.
Fantastic vehicle, all equipment worked well and ready to go, thanks Milena y Nacho. Very good people to deal with. A trip to the eclipse at Penafiel. Rosa & Joe from escocia.
We had a great time and would thoroughly recommend this campervan. We explored Annecy, Lake Geneva and the Jura.
The owner Charlotte was super helpful and very kind. The van worked out perfectly for us as we followed the Tour de France around for a few days. The van has enough room to be comfortable and small enough to navigate the skinny French streets. Fully equipped with anything you would need. A great experience, thanks Charlotte!
