Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park — a region worth exploring

Yosemite National Park spans over 3,000 square kilometres of California's Sierra Nevada range, with its iconic granite monolith El Capitan rising 900 metres from the valley floor — the largest exposed granite face on Earth. From the thundering cascade of Yosemite Falls, North America's tallest waterfall at 739 metres, to the ancient giant sequoias of Mariposa Grove, the park offers a remarkable concentration of natural wonders. The drive from San Francisco to Yosemite covers roughly 270 km via Highway 120, while the route from Los Angeles stretches approximately 470 km through the San Joaquin Valley. Inside the park, Glacier Point provides sweeping views across the valley, and Tuolumne Meadows opens up a vast subalpine landscape ideal for those who prefer quieter surroundings. The roads through Yosemite suit a range of vehicles, though some routes like Tioga Road wind through high-altitude passes that reward careful, unhurried driving. Exploring by campervan gives you the flexibility to wake up surrounded by pine forests and move at your own pace between trailheads and viewpoints. A motorhome works well for families wanting extra space on longer trips through the Sierra Nevada foothills. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners in nearby towns like Fresno, Merced, or Mariposa, making it easy to find the right vehicle for your Yosemite adventure without the formality of traditional rental agencies.

Best time to visit

Yosemite National Park is at its most accessible from May to October, when Tioga Road and high-country trails are open. Late May brings peak waterfall flow as snowmelt feeds Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Fall — a sight worth planning around. The Bracebridge Dinner, a beloved holiday tradition held each December at The Ahwahnee, draws visitors during the quieter winter months. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during spring or autumn often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing compared to the busy summer weeks. Reserve early for July and August, as Yosemite is one of the most popular parks in the country during those months.

Just back from an amazing trip in Francois’s campervan. Everything with the van was perfect. It came with everything we needed and was so smooth to drive. There were 3 of us in the group - 1 adult and 2 teens and there was plenty of room. Bowls, plates, cutlery and cooking utensils were included of course. Bedding is available for a small extra fee Francois was amazing to rent from. He ensured there was great communication before, during and after the trip, and he arranged very handy pick up and collection points. He also sent several “how-to” videos over WhatsApp, which really helped us figure out our temporary home. I would highly recommend renting from him.

we had a really wonderful time with Aurélie’s camper van. A very reliable vehicle and fully equipped with everything we needed to be comfortable both in campsites and finding amazing panoramic views in the Pyrenees to camp overnight. Aurélie is a fantastic host, always reachable and going above and beyond for us. We felt very at home for our whole trip!
