The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
San Francisco International Airport sits just 21 km south of downtown San Francisco, making it one of the most convenient starting points for a campervan adventure along the California coast. From here, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge is a short 30 km drive north, while the towering redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument lie only 40 km away. Head south and you can reach the surf town of Santa Cruz in around 115 km, or push further to Big Sur's dramatic cliffs along Highway 1 in roughly 240 km. The Bay Area's geography is ideal for life on the road — mild coastal weather, well-maintained highways, and a network of state parks with generous pitch sizes for larger vehicles. Inland, the rolling hills of Napa Valley begin just 95 km northeast, offering vineyard-lined routes that suit both compact campervans and full-size motorhomes. Whether you want to wake up beside the Pacific Ocean at Half Moon Bay or park among giant sequoias in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the region rewards those who travel at their own pace. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across the Bay Area, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size, budget, and itinerary. It is a practical, personal way to begin exploring Northern California from the moment you land.
The San Francisco Bay Area enjoys a long travel season, with May to October offering warm, dry days perfect for campervan life along the coast. September and October are particularly rewarding — fewer crowds, golden light, and events like the Sonoma County Harvest Fair in early October celebrating the local wine season. Spring brings wildflower blooms across Marin County and Point Reyes. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you can often find better rates outside the peak summer months of July and August. We recommend booking at least four to six weeks ahead for summer trips near San Francisco Airport to secure the best choice of vehicles.

The area around San Francisco Airport offers a great mix of coastal, woodland, and urban campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Along the coast you will find pitches with ocean views and basic facilities, while inland parks provide full hook-ups, hot showers, and spacious bays for larger vehicles. From beachside spots on the Pacific to shaded forest grounds in Marin County, there is plenty of variety within a short drive of the airport.
California's highways near San Francisco Airport are toll-free on most routes, though the Golden Gate Bridge charges a southbound toll collected electronically via FasTrak or licence plate billing. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans over 4.5 tonnes are generally capped at 55 mph (88 km/h) on freeways, compared to 65 mph for cars. Highway 1 along the coast features narrow, winding sections south of Pacifica — larger motorhomes should check vehicle length restrictions before heading to Big Sur. Rest areas along Interstate 280 and US-101 are well spaced and offer free parking for short breaks.
Ivan and his wife are very friendly and helpfull. We had a great holiday.
Albi is brilliant. He’s incredibly trustworthy and friendly, we immediately just got a great vibe from him and that was correct because he answered all of our questions and was very laid back and dependable. His van was perfect and so easy to use.
Beautiful experience, very easy to drive and comfy
Excellent experience with Anita! Communication was clear and polite, they treated the van very nicely and everything went extremely well.
Eric's van has everything you need. It was clean and the design was functional, and easy to convert the bed and table. The kitchen was very well equipped, and the fridge and water tap was a nice luxury for a camping trip. Communication and handover from Eric was easy, and he was helpful and fast to reply, when we had small questions along the way. Highly recommend!
Todo super bien!
