Why choose San Diego for your road trip

San Diego — a city worth exploring

San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter stretches across 16.5 blocks of Victorian-era architecture, making it one of the largest historic districts in the United States. The city sits along 112 km of Pacific coastline, offering everything from the world-renowned San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park to the maritime heritage of the USS Midway Museum on the waterfront. Families and curious travellers alike enjoy the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla, while the Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma provides sweeping views across the bay. For a change of scenery, the mountain town of Julian is just 80 km to the north-east, famous for its apple orchards, and the surf-friendly beaches of Carlsbad lie roughly 55 km up the coast. San Diego's wide, well-maintained roads and mild year-round climate make it a comfortable base for exploring by campervan or motorhome. Coastal routes are generally spacious, and many attractions offer generous parking for larger vehicles. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the San Diego area, which means a more personal pick-up experience and often a handful of insider tips on the best overnight spots. Whether you plan to cruise the Pacific Coast Highway or head inland towards the desert, a campervan rented through the peer-to-peer community here puts you right at the heart of Southern California's outdoor lifestyle.

Best time to visit

San Diego enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, so any month works well for a campervan trip. Spring brings the lively San Diego Crew Classic rowing regatta each March on Mission Bay, while summer is ideal for the world-famous Comic-Con International in July. Autumn offers quieter campsites and comfortable driving temperatures, perfect for exploring at a relaxed pace. Book your motorhome early for the June-to-August peak, when demand is highest. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive rates even during popular periods, as local San Diego owners set their own prices and availability.

Alberto was great and super helpful with knowing good spots to park/camp for the night. He has lots of experience camping around the island that is super helpful. He responded quickly to messages. The van was great! We were there during a heatwave and the A/C still kept up during the night keeping us cool and comfy.

Virginia was awesome! She was really communicative, flexible, and super helpful. The van had everything we needed, and we had a great time. I'd definitely rent from her again!

Such a fantastic RV! We named it Raul and he could do no wrong - except where we could not navigate the narrow lanes in the Douro Valley - but that was not Raul’s fault. Worked like a dream, Joao was super helpful, pick-up and drop off was super easy

Really good guys. Easy to interact. I’m pretty sure that was one of the most clean returns in terms of internal motorhome condition!

The rental service was very friendly. I had some individual requests, which were answered. Chencho delivered the campervan to us and recommended some great places to visit in Ibiza – best regards. The car is in good condition for its age, lacking nothing. Very good value for money, I recommend it and remember this time as a very enjoyable one.

We had a fantastic experience renting this motorhome for our 8‑day family trip through Catalonia. The vehicle was completely new, beautifully equipped, and very comfortable. The owner was always available, offering great route suggestions and useful travel apps, which made our journey even easier. The motorhome had everything we needed: a fully equipped kitchen, a complete bathroom, excellent beds, plenty of space, and a smart layout. Driving and parking were simple thanks to the rear‑view camera, sensors, and phone connectivity for navigation. Full insurance was already included, so no extra coverage was necessary. Overall, we enjoyed a wonderful family adventure and can highly recommend this motorhome — especially the Benimar model — for anyone planning a trip in Spain.
