California stretches 1,350 kilometres along the Pacific coast and is home to nine national parks — more than any other US state. From the towering granite walls of Yosemite Valley to the sun-warmed shores of San Diego, the landscape shifts dramatically as you travel. The drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles along Highway 1 covers roughly 615 kilometres and passes through Big Sur, where the road clings to sea cliffs high above the ocean. Head inland and you can cross Death Valley, the lowest point in North America at 86 metres below sea level, before climbing into the Sierra Nevada, where Mount Whitney rises to 4,421 metres — the highest peak in the contiguous United States. California's road network is built for long-distance travel, with well-maintained rest stops and a huge variety of campsites suited to every type of vehicle. Coastal campgrounds, desert pitches and forested mountain sites all welcome campervans and motorhomes of different sizes. Whether you want to surf at Huntington Beach, walk among ancient redwoods in Humboldt County, or explore the volcanic terrain of Lassen Volcanic National Park, a campervan gives you the freedom to move at your own pace. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a motorhome directly from a local owner in California, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your route and group size. It is a practical, personal way to discover a state that rewards those who take the scenic road.
California is a year-round destination, with each season offering something distinct. Spring (March to May) is ideal for wildflower displays in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, while autumn brings harvest festivals across Napa and Sonoma wine country, including the Sonoma County Harvest Fair in October. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so we recommend booking early on Yescapa to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners — peer-to-peer hire often means more competitive rates than traditional rental agencies. Winter opens up uncrowded coastal routes and mild temperatures along the southern coast, perfect for a relaxed motorhome trip from Santa Barbara to San Diego.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 250 km loop through California's premier wine country winds from Napa to Sonoma via Calistoga and Healdsburg. Allow 3–6 days to visit tasting rooms, soak in natural hot springs and explore charming small towns. A campervan is perfect for this route, with several vineyard-adjacent campsites along the way.
Covering 280 km from Palm Springs through Joshua Tree National Park and on to Pioneertown, this California desert route suits both campervans and motorhomes. Spend 3–6 days hiking among the park's iconic rock formations, stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the state, and camping at well-equipped desert pitches.
Drive 450 km along California's legendary Highway 1 from Monterey to San Luis Obispo, passing through Big Sur and stopping at Pfeiffer Beach and Hearst Castle. A motorhome trip of 5–8 days lets you linger at oceanfront campsites. Some sections have tight bends, so vehicles under 10 metres are recommended.
This 500 km loop explores California's mountain heartland over 5–8 days, linking Yosemite Valley, Mammoth Lakes and Sequoia National Park. Expect alpine meadows, giant sequoia groves and well-serviced campgrounds with hook-ups. A campervan handles the winding mountain roads comfortably and keeps you close to trailheads.
Stretch 650 km from San Francisco north through Mendocino, the Avenue of the Giants and Redwood National Park near Crescent City. Over 7–11 days you can walk among the tallest trees on Earth and camp in quiet forest campgrounds. This California route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with plenty of services along US-101.
Cover 900 km in 10–15 days on a grand north-to-south journey from Lassen Volcanic National Park through Sacramento, Yosemite and down to Los Angeles. This route showcases California's full diversity — volcanoes, farmland, granite peaks and coastline. Campsites are plentiful, and hiring a motorhome on Yescapa gives you the freedom to set your own pace.

California offers an extraordinary range of campsites, from beachfront pitches along the Pacific to forested mountain grounds in the Sierra Nevada and sparse desert sites in the south-east. Most state park campgrounds provide toilets, showers and fire rings, while many also feature electric hook-ups and dump stations suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Booking ahead is recommended for popular parks, especially during summer months.
California's highway network is toll-free on most routes, though a handful of express lanes and bridges — such as the Golden Gate Bridge — charge electronic tolls via FasTrak. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans over 4,500 kg are generally capped at 55 mph (about 90 km/h) on freeways, compared to 65–70 mph for cars. Mountain passes like Tioga Pass (Highway 120) close seasonally, so check Caltrans updates before heading into the Sierra Nevada. Rest areas are plentiful along major interstates, and many include RV-friendly parking bays with dump stations.

We had an amazing road trip with Gerard’s campervan! The van was clean, spacious, and extremely reliable on the road. It drove very smoothly and had everything we needed for a comfortable camping experience—a cozy bed, a well-equipped kitchen setup, and plenty of storage space for all our gear.
