Scotland's North Coast 500 route stretches across 516 miles of dramatic coastline, widely regarded as one of the world's most rewarding driving experiences. From the rugged peaks of the Cairngorms National Park to the wild shores of the Isle of Skye, this is a land shaped by nature on a grand scale. Edinburgh, the capital, sits around 155 miles south of Inverness, the gateway to the Highlands, while Glasgow to Fort William covers roughly 105 miles through lochs and glens. Landmarks like Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, the Kelpies sculpture near Falkirk, and the Old Man of Storr on Skye give every road trip a sense of discovery. Scotland's roads range from smooth dual carriageways in the Lowlands to single-track routes in the far north, making vehicle choice an important part of planning. A campervan handles narrow Highland lanes with ease, while a motorhome offers extra comfort for longer tours across the country. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based throughout Scotland — from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Inverness and Aberdeen — giving you a wide choice of vehicles and flexible pick-up points. The peer-to-peer model means competitive pricing and personal recommendations from people who know the region best. Whether you are drawn to coastal cliffs, ancient castles, or whisky distilleries, a campervan trip through Scotland puts you right at the heart of it all.
Scotland welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. May to September brings the longest daylight hours — ideal for driving the Highlands and camping beside lochs. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe lights up August with thousands of performances, while the Braemar Gathering in September celebrates Highland games and tradition. Spring and autumn are quieter on the roads, and Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire rates outside peak months. Winter opens up opportunities for northern lights spotting in the far north. Book your campervan early for summer to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners across Scotland.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Scotland's most celebrated driving loop starts and ends in Inverness, circling the northern Highlands through Durness, John o' Groats, and Applecross. At around 830 km, this route suits a motorhome or campervan and takes at least a week to enjoy properly. Expect single-track roads, wild beaches, and well-placed campsites along the way.
This 480 km route links Speyside's famous distilleries with the dramatic scenery of the Cairngorms. Start in Perth, head north through Pitlochry and Aviemore, then loop through Dufftown and Aberlour before returning south. A campervan is ideal for navigating the quieter Speyside roads, with plenty of farm campsites to stop at along the way.
Covering around 250 km from Fort William to Skye and back, this short route packs in some of Scotland's most memorable landscapes. Cross the Skye Bridge, visit the Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools, then return via Eilean Donan Castle. Campervan-friendly campsites are dotted across the island, though booking ahead is recommended.
A 200 km loop through the Scottish Borders, starting from Edinburgh and passing through Melrose, Jedburgh, and Kelso. Visit the ruins of Melrose Abbey and Floors Castle, and enjoy gentle rolling countryside ideal for a relaxed campervan trip. Roads are wide and well-surfaced, making this route perfect for first-time hirers exploring Scotland at a slower pace.
Stretching around 400 km from Glasgow to Oban and up to Glencoe and Fort William, this route follows Scotland's Atlantic coast. Take the ferry to Mull from Oban, explore Glencoe's mountain passes, and camp beside Loch Linnhe. A motorhome handles the A82 comfortably, with well-equipped campsites at regular intervals along the coast.
This 600 km route runs from Edinburgh up through Dundee, Aberdeen, and on to Inverness along Scotland's east coast. Stop at the Dunnottar Castle ruins near Stonehaven, explore the fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife, and visit the Moray Firth for dolphin watching. Well-maintained A-roads make this route comfortable for larger motorhomes, with coastal campsites offering sea views.

Scotland offers a wide range of campsites suited to every style of trip, from coastal pitches with ocean views to woodland clearings deep in the Highlands. Many sites provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated motorhome service points, while others focus on a simpler, back-to-nature experience. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find well-maintained facilities spread across Scotland, from the Borders in the south to the far north coast.
Scotland has no motorway tolls, making it straightforward to plan your route without worrying about extra costs. The main motorways — the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the M9 and M90 heading north — are well maintained and suitable for all vehicle sizes. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. In the Highlands, many roads become single-track with passing places; patience and courtesy are key. Rest areas and laybys are well signposted throughout the country. Larger motorhomes should check height and width restrictions on some rural bridges and narrow lanes in the far north and west.
It was our 1st time in a Caravan, and we feel very fortunate that we have done it with Jeremy & Annabella, their Caravan is exactly as decribed in the pictures, in a perfect mechanical situation, we had 0 problens through the whole joirney, and we were 6 people in that Caravan, I have no doubt that we will reserve it again in the future. The check in and out went completely smoove with Jeremy, you can feel free to trust them!
Great, responsible, and responsive owner. Van is equipped as advertised. The refrigerator loses its battery fast when van is turned off, so it caused some issues overnight in hot weather. Cars engine is a bit weak when driving uphill, but never caused any real issues. Great choice if you want a small van for exploring towns and coast of Andalusia.
Absolutely recommended renter. Really kind and nice people. They gave back the van clean in and out, so big respect to you guys. Thanks for your rent.
Very nice camper that has a lot of comfort for travelling Mallorca. One star less due toSlow/difficult communication with the owner, who only started to confirm our messages/questions 1 day before the actual start of the trip, The fact that the agreed pick-up time was not respected (and not communicated before we arrived on the airport) and got delayed with 1,5 h.Do know that towels and linnen are available in the camper (or they were at least for us), so no need to bring them.
Fantastic experience renting Dirk’s camper van! Pick-up and drop-off were exactly as we wished—very flexible both in time and location, which we really appreciated. The van was perfect for four adults: spacious, spotlessly clean, and excellently equipped with everything we needed and more. It was also very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. Dirk provided a very handy e-book with all the essential information about the van, which made everything even easier.A pure pleasure from beginning to end—we would definitely rent from Dirk again!
Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.
