Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Tenerife

Tenerife — a region worth exploring

Tenerife is home to Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3,718 metres, which sits at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage national park and offers one of the most rewarding drives in the Canary Islands. The island stretches roughly 80 kilometres from the Anaga Rural Park in the northeast to the dramatic cliffs of Los Gigantes in the west, giving you a remarkable range of landscapes to explore by road. From the lush laurel forests of the Teno massif to the golden dunes of Playa de las Teresicas and the charming colonial streets of La Laguna — another UNESCO site — there is always a reason to pull over. The TF-5 motorway connects Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Puerto de la Cruz in about 35 kilometres, while the TF-1 links the capital to the southern resort of Los Cristianos over roughly 75 kilometres, making it easy to cover the island at your own pace. Coastal roads and mountain switchbacks reward careful driving, and many lay-bys offer panoramic viewpoints perfect for a quick stop. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the island, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles that suit solo travellers, couples, and families alike. The peer-to-peer model means competitive prices and personal tips from people who know Tenerife best.

Best time to visit

Tenerife enjoys a mild climate year-round, making it a fantastic destination for a campervan trip in any season. Spring brings the famous Carnival of Santa Cruz in February or March — one of the largest carnivals in the world — filling the streets with colour and music. The Corpus Christi flower carpets in La Orotava, usually in June, are another highlight worth planning around. Summer and early autumn are ideal for coastal drives and beach stops, while winter offers comfortable temperatures for hiking in Teide National Park. Booking through Yescapa during the quieter months of October to December often means more choice and better peer-to-peer rates on campervans and motorhomes across Tenerife.

The best road trips in Tenerife

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Anaga Discovery Loop

120 km 3–5 days

Start in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and wind through the ancient laurel forests of the Anaga Rural Park. Stop at the village of Taganana for fresh fish, then descend to the black-sand beach of Playa de Benijo. This 120 km loop suits a campervan perfectly, with compact roads and small parking areas along the way.

The Southern Sun Route

90 km 3–6 days

Follow the TF-1 from Los Cristianos to the quiet fishing village of El Médano, famous for its windsurfing beaches. Continue to the volcanic landscape of Montaña Roja and end at the coastal town of Candelaria with its striking basilica. Around 90 km of easy, sun-drenched driving in Tenerife's south.

The Teide Highland Crossing

200 km 5–8 days

Drive from Puerto de la Cruz up the TF-21 through pine forests to Teide National Park, where volcanic terrain stretches in every direction. Visit the Roques de García rock formations and the Parador hotel viewpoint. Descend via Vilaflor, Spain's highest village, towards the south coast. Around 200 km best enjoyed over five to seven days in a motorhome or campervan.

The North Coast Heritage Trail

300 km 5–8 days

Begin in La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage city, and head west through the lush Orotava Valley to Icod de los Vinos, home to the ancient Drago Milenario tree. Continue to Garachico with its natural lava pools and finish at the Teno lighthouse. This 300 km route through northern Tenerife offers rich history and green landscapes ideal for a campervan.

The Full Island Circuit

350 km 7–11 days

Circle the entire island starting from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, heading south along the TF-1 past Los Cristianos and Adeje, then north through Los Gigantes and Buenavista del Norte before returning via the TF-5. At roughly 350 km, this route takes in every side of Tenerife and works well in a motorhome with plenty of campsite options along the coast.

The Deep Tenerife Explorer

500 km 10–15 days

Combine coast and highlands over two weeks, starting in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and weaving through Anaga, La Laguna, the Orotava Valley, Teide National Park, Masca village, Los Gigantes, and the southern beaches of El Médano. At around 500 km with detours, this comprehensive route lets you experience every landscape the island offers, with time to hike, swim, and linger at campsites.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Tenerife

Tenerife has two main motorways: the TF-1 running along the south coast and the TF-5 along the north. Both are toll-free, well-maintained, and clearly signposted. The general speed limit on these motorways is 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3,500 kg must keep to 90 km/h. Mountain roads such as the TF-21 up to Teide are narrow with tight bends, so take your time and use lay-bys to let faster traffic pass. Fuel stations are plentiful in urban areas but scarcer in the highlands, so fill up before heading inland. Rest areas along the TF-1 and TF-5 offer parking suitable for larger vehicles.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
