Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura — a region worth exploring

Fuerteventura stretches over 1,660 square kilometres, making it the second-largest of the Canary Islands and home to some of Europe's most impressive sand dunes at the Parque Natural de Corralejo. The island's 150 kilometres of coastline offer everything from the wild surf beaches of El Cotillo to the calm turquoise lagoons of Sotavento, a world-renowned windsurfing spot. Inland, the volcanic landscape of the Betancuria Rural Park reveals ancient lava fields and the 807-metre peak of Pico de la Zarza, the island's highest point. From Puerto del Rosario, the capital, to the southern tip at Punta de Jandía, the drive covers roughly 100 kilometres — an easy day's journey with plenty of stops along the way. Heading north from Corralejo to the fishing village of El Cotillo is just 18 kilometres, perfect for a leisurely morning drive with a campervan. The roads are well-maintained and mostly flat, which makes Fuerteventura ideal for travellers in larger vehicles like motorhomes. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the island, giving you the flexibility to explore at your own pace while supporting the community. Whether you want to chase waves, hike volcanic trails, or simply park up by a quiet beach, this island rewards those who take their time.

Best time to visit

Fuerteventura enjoys a warm climate year-round, making it a fantastic destination for campervan travel in any season. Spring brings the lively Fiestas de la Virgen del Rosario in October and the International Kite Festival in Corralejo each November, both worth planning around. Summer is the busiest period, so booking early on Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer rates. Winter months are wonderfully mild, with temperatures around 20°C, ideal for hiking the Betancuria trails or exploring the coast without the summer crowds. Fuerteventura's campsites and parking areas remain accessible throughout the year.

The best road trips in Fuerteventura

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Northern Dune Coast

80 km 3–5 days

Start in Corralejo and explore the Grandes Playas de Corralejo with their sweeping sand dunes. Continue to El Cotillo, where calm lagoons and the historic Torre del Tostón await. Around 80 km through northern Fuerteventura make this a perfect short campervan trip with stops at secluded coves along the way.

Central Volcano Trail

60 km 3–6 days

Discover the heart of Fuerteventura on a 60 km loop from Puerto del Rosario. Visit the Calderón Hondo volcano with its walkable crater rim and continue to Betancuria, the oldest settlement in the Canaries. The winding mountain roads suit a campervan well — allow plenty of time for photo stops along the way.

East Coast Circuit

180 km 5–8 days

This 180 km route follows the east coast of Fuerteventura from Corralejo through Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal down to Morro Jable. Along the way you pass the Salinas del Carmen, a historic salt museum right by the sea. Numerous pitches along the coast offer space for both motorhomes and campervans.

West Coast Discovery

150 km 5–8 days

Explore the wild west coast of Fuerteventura over roughly 150 km from El Cotillo to Playa de Cofete. Visit the Cuevas de Ajuy, hike through the Barranco de las Peñitas gorge and enjoy the remote atmosphere of the Jandía peninsula. This route suits experienced drivers — some sections are unpaved and best tackled in a compact campervan.

Full Island Loop

250 km 7–11 days

Circle the whole of Fuerteventura on roughly 250 km and experience the island's diversity over a week. Start in Puerto del Rosario, head north through Corralejo and El Cotillo, inland via Betancuria, then south along the west coast to Morro Jable. Return via Gran Tarajal on the east coast. Ideal for a motorhome, with plenty of campsites along the route.

Fuerteventura in Depth

300 km 10–15 days

Take 10 to 14 days and explore Fuerteventura at a relaxed pace over roughly 300 km. Combine highlights from every coast with inland detours: the dunes of Corralejo, the oasis at Vega de Río Palmas, the beaches of Sotavento and the remote Playa de Cofete. Stops in La Oliva and Pájara offer insight into the island's culture. Perfect for those who want to discover every corner by campervan.

Stefan was easy to communicate with and responded to any questions promptly. The campervan was very comfortable and fuel efficient. The solar electricity worked flawlessly and allowed us to largely avoid commercial camps. Thanks for the great travel experience in your van.

Excelent guests!!! I can only recommend them to all fellow providers!

Bavo

Don't let the old age of the campervan fool you it will still get you where you need to go and drive up the steep hills albeit with a small learning curve. The van has everything that you need and you can sleep in it comfortably. It does show a bit of it's age but that's part of the charm. Maria and Jake are great hosts who will take the time to show you how the vehicle works and purrs. They will also give you an extensive lists of sleeping spots, hikes and things to do in Sao Jorge which is greatly appreciated. If you want to sleep next to the ocean or on the hills of Sao Jorge, I recommend this van!
