Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Tennessee

Tennessee — a region worth exploring

Tennessee stretches 710 miles from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Mississippi River in the west, making it one of the longest states to cross by road in the United States. This geographic diversity means a single trip can take you from the misty peaks of Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the most visited national park in the country — to the soulful streets of Beale Street in Memphis, where blues music was born. The drive from Nashville to Memphis covers roughly 340 km along Interstate 40, while the route from Knoxville to Chattanooga is about 170 km through the Tennessee River Valley. Along the way, you can explore landmarks like the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, Lookout Mountain, and Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the state at 2,025 metres. Tennessee's roads are well suited to campervan travel, with wide interstates connecting major cities and scenic two-lane highways winding through the Cumberland Plateau and Cherokee National Forest. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for mountain roads or a spacious motorhome for longer stretches, Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform connects you with local owners across Tennessee who share their vehicles for hire. This means more choice, more flexibility, and a more personal way to experience the Volunteer State on your own terms.

Best time to visit

Tennessee is a rewarding destination in every season. Spring (April to June) brings wildflower blooms across the Great Smoky Mountains, while autumn (September to November) delivers spectacular foliage along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Summer is ideal for music lovers — the CMA Fest in Nashville takes place each June, drawing country fans from around the world. Winter offers quieter roads and lower campsite demand, which is great for budget-conscious travellers. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better rates than traditional hire companies, especially outside peak summer months. We recommend booking a campervan early for June through August to secure the best selection.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Tennessee

Tennessee's interstate network is toll-free, so you can travel the length of the state without paying road charges. The key routes are Interstate 40 (east–west), Interstate 65 (north–south through Nashville), and Interstate 75 (through Knoxville). Speed limits for motorhomes and larger vehicles are generally 105 km/h (65 mph) on interstates and 70–90 km/h (45–55 mph) on rural highways. Rest areas with free parking are well spaced along major routes. Be aware that some mountain roads in eastern Tennessee, such as those in the Smokies, have vehicle length restrictions — typically 9 metres — so check signage before entering narrow scenic drives.

We had the best trip with the van "Fiona" we rented by Cuca - the most amazing host. There was no problems with the van, and it was driving great for an old car. The van also had everything we needed like a portabel shower, a sink with running water, a cooler and a much needed parasol. Cuca recommended the best beaches and places, and responded quickly to any questions we had. We cant recommend Cuca and the van enough!
