Why choose Frankfurt for your road trip

Frankfurt — a city worth exploring

Frankfurt's skyline is the only one in Germany that rivals a major American city, earning it the nickname 'Mainhattan' thanks to its cluster of skyscrapers along the River Main. Beyond the financial district, the Römerberg square showcases beautifully reconstructed half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th century. The Städel Museum holds over 3,000 paintings spanning 700 years of European art, while the Palmengarten botanical garden covers 22 hectares of tropical and subtropical plant life. A short walk across the Eiserner Steg footbridge leads to the Museumsufer, a stretch of 13 museums lining the south bank of the Main. Frankfurt is well connected for wider exploration too — Heidelberg sits just 88 km to the south, and the Rhine Valley wine region begins roughly 60 km to the west. The city's position at the heart of Germany's motorway network makes it an ideal base for a campervan trip, with easy access to the Taunus hills and surrounding countryside. Roads leading out of Frankfurt are wide and well-maintained, suiting both compact campervans and larger motorhomes. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Frankfurt area, giving you a personal, peer-to-peer experience and often a more flexible pick-up arrangement than traditional rental depots.

Best time to visit

Frankfurt is a rewarding destination throughout the year. The Museumsuferfest in late August draws over three million visitors to the riverbanks for music, food, and open museum nights — a brilliant weekend to be in the city with a campervan. In December, the Frankfurt Christmas Market transforms the Römerberg into one of Germany's oldest festive gatherings, running since 1393. Spring and early autumn offer comfortable driving conditions and quieter campsites in the Taunus hills. For the best choice of vehicles, book through Yescapa ahead of peak summer months when demand for motorhome hire rises across the region.

Top getaways from Frankfurt

Frankfurt is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Frankfurt to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

150km southeast 3–6 days

Travel 150 km southeast along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany's best-preserved medieval towns. Walk the full circuit of the town walls and visit the Christmas Museum. Stop in Würzburg on the way for the Residenz palace. Several well-equipped campervan sites sit just outside the old town.

Frankfurt to Cologne

190km northwest 3–6 days

Cover 190 km northwest to Cologne, following the Rhine through Koblenz and the Siebengebirge hills. Visit Cologne Cathedral, the Chocolate Museum, and the Belgian Quarter's independent shops. The route offers multiple riverside Stellplätze for overnight stops. A campervan gives you the freedom to pause wherever the view calls.

Frankfurt to Lake Constance

270km south 5–8 days

Head 270 km south to Lake Constance, passing through the Black Forest. Explore Freiburg's Münster market, hike the Feldberg summit, then relax on the lakeside promenade in Konstanz. The flower island of Mainau is a must-see. Motorhome pitches along the lake fill up in summer, so plan your stops in advance.

Frankfurt to Munich

350km southeast 5–8 days

Drive 350 km southeast to Munich via Nuremberg, combining two of Bavaria's greatest cities. Visit Nuremberg's Imperial Castle and the Dokumentationszentrum, then continue to Munich for the Englischer Garten and Marienplatz. The A3 and A9 motorways are well suited to motorhomes, with service areas offering dedicated RV parking throughout.

Frankfurt to Heidelberg

88km south 1–4 days

Head 88 km south to Heidelberg and its famous Renaissance castle perched above the Neckar River. Wander the Philosophers' Walk for panoramic views, then explore the old university quarter. Campervan parking is available near the Neckar meadows, and the Bergstrasse route through Bensheim makes a scenic detour.

Frankfurt to Rüdesheim

65km west 1–3 days

Drive 65 km west to Rüdesheim, gateway to the UNESCO Rhine Gorge. Ride the cable car to the Niederwald Monument, then sample Riesling in the Drosselgasse lane. Motorhome spaces are available at the riverside Stellplatz, and the route via Eltville passes through rolling vineyards.

Highly reccomend! This is an easy and fun to drive Camper with a very comfortable and cozy bed, well outfitted with an excellent cooking system. Spacious with nice privacy glass throughout and rooftop vent. Pick up was fast and easy. It was the perfect vehicle to explore in for almost two weeks. Would definitely rent again!

Our experience with Yescapa was extremely poor. The pickup location for the camper was incorrect, which caused us to lose both time and money, as we had to take an Uber to the actual location, which we essentially had to figure out ourselves. When we arrived at the Roadsurfer office, they initially refused to rent us the camper because they claimed that my driving licence had not been issued by a country accepted by the company. However, when I made the reservation through Yescapa, I provided all the required information and uploaded photos of my licence. This caused us further delays and additional expenses, as I had to pay for an international driving licence validation. Communication was also very poor. We were basically unable to get in touch with anyone to ask our questions or receive assistance regarding the issues we encountered.
