Why choose Frankfurt for your road trip

Frankfurt — a city worth exploring

Frankfurt's skyline is the only one in Germany that rivals a major American city, earning it the nickname 'Mainhattan' thanks to its cluster of skyscrapers along the River Main. Beyond the financial district, the Römerberg square showcases beautifully reconstructed half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th century. The Städel Museum holds over 3,000 paintings spanning 700 years of European art, while the Palmengarten botanical garden covers 22 hectares of tropical and subtropical plant life. A short walk across the Eiserner Steg footbridge leads to the Museumsufer, a stretch of 13 museums lining the south bank of the Main. Frankfurt is well connected for wider exploration too — Heidelberg sits just 88 km to the south, and the Rhine Valley wine region begins roughly 60 km to the west. The city's position at the heart of Germany's motorway network makes it an ideal base for a campervan trip, with easy access to the Taunus hills and surrounding countryside. Roads leading out of Frankfurt are wide and well-maintained, suiting both compact campervans and larger motorhomes. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Frankfurt area, giving you a personal, peer-to-peer experience and often a more flexible pick-up arrangement than traditional rental depots.

Best time to visit

Frankfurt is a rewarding destination throughout the year. The Museumsuferfest in late August draws over three million visitors to the riverbanks for music, food, and open museum nights — a brilliant weekend to be in the city with a campervan. In December, the Frankfurt Christmas Market transforms the Römerberg into one of Germany's oldest festive gatherings, running since 1393. Spring and early autumn offer comfortable driving conditions and quieter campsites in the Taunus hills. For the best choice of vehicles, book through Yescapa ahead of peak summer months when demand for motorhome hire rises across the region.

Top getaways from Frankfurt

Frankfurt is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Frankfurt to Wiesbaden

40km west 1–3 days

Head 40 km west to Hesse's elegant state capital. Wander through the Kurhaus gardens, sample wines in the Rheingau wine region nearby, and soak in the thermal waters at Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme. Campervan parking is straightforward along the Rhine promenade, and you can easily loop back via Mainz for a two-day mini break.

Frankfurt to Heidelberg

88km south 2–4 days

Drive 88 km south along the A5 to reach Heidelberg's famous Old Bridge and Renaissance castle perched above the Neckar. Explore the Philosophers' Walk for panoramic views, then visit the German Pharmacy Museum inside the castle grounds. Campsites along the Neckar valley offer riverside pitches with hook-ups — ideal for a relaxed two- to three-day motorhome trip.

Frankfurt to Koblenz

65km northwest 1–4 days

Cover 65 km northwest to Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet at the Deutsches Eck. Ride the cable car up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress for sweeping valley views, then follow the Rhine Gorge south through Boppard and St Goar. The B9 road hugs the riverbank and is well suited to campervans, with several designated overnight stops along the way.

Frankfurt to Nuremberg

180km southeast 3–6 days

Take the A3 southeast for 180 km to Nuremberg, Bavaria's cultural powerhouse. Walk the ramparts of the Kaiserburg, browse the stalls of the Handwerkerhof artisan quarter, and visit the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. Continue to nearby Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage town 60 km north. Motorhome service areas are well signposted along the autobahn for comfortable multi-day touring.

Frankfurt to the Black Forest

200km southwest 4–7 days

Head 200 km southwest to reach the northern Black Forest around Baden-Baden. Soak in the Friedrichsbad thermal baths, hike the Geroldsauer Wasserfall trail, and drive the scenic Schwarzwaldhochstraße. Continue south to Triberg to see Germany's highest waterfall. Forest campsites offer spacious pitches surrounded by fir trees — a campervan paradise for four to six days of fresh mountain air.

Frankfurt to Lake Constance

350km south 5–8 days

A 350 km drive south brings you to Lake Constance, where Germany, Austria and Switzerland share a shoreline. Explore the flower island of Mainau, wander through medieval Meersburg, and take a ferry to Konstanz. En route, stop in Ulm to see the world's tallest church spire. Lakeside campsites fill up in summer, so book pitches ahead. This week-long motorhome journey covers some of southern Germany's finest scenery.

Where to park your motorhome

Frankfurt has several options for parking larger vehicles, though the city centre is best explored on foot or by public transport. Overnight parking in a motorhome or campervan is generally not permitted on public streets within the city, but dedicated motorhome parking areas and park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts make it easy to leave your vehicle safely while you explore. Always check height restrictions before entering multi-storey car parks.

  • Wohnmobilstellplatz Frankfurt-Osthafen, 3km east — Dedicated motorhome parking area near the Osthafen with flat hardstanding pitches, close to public transport links into the city centre.
  • P+R Messe Frankfurt, 5km west — Large park-and-ride facility near the trade fair grounds with generous space for larger vehicles and direct S-Bahn access to the city centre.
  • P+R Stadion, 6km south — Spacious park-and-ride car park near the Deutsche Bank Park stadium, suitable for motorhomes and campervans, with tram connections to the centre.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Frankfurt

Great camper with all the necessary bits to enjoy off grid or plug in. Naiara and Miguel were very helpful and managed to communicate well with us, even though we didn't speak Spanish. They were extremely kind and considerate throughout the trip and responded quickly to any messages or queries. Llanes is a beautiful place to start your journey- we went up to Somiedo, in the mountains, and then spent a few days back by the sea.

If you’re looking for the perfect camper van, look no further! Sylvia’s van exceeded all of our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly comfortable, and equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly need. You can immediately tell how much care and attention Sylvia puts into making sure her guests have the best possible experience. What really made the difference was Sylvia herself. She was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and always quick to respond, making us feel supported from the moment we booked until the end of our trip. Thanks to her amazing van, we had an unforgettable adventure and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We would happily rent from Sylvia again and recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for a reliable host and a fantastic camper van.

I loved tripping around the island with this van. It is equipped with many accessories as described, and some basic food condiments to get you started. Sleeping was comfortable, and handling the van itself too!

We had a fantastic trip in Joao's campervan. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. Every window has a mosquito screen, making it very easy to ventilate the van. It is also a very pleasant and reliable vehicle; we had no trouble driving up steep roads. It is an excellent campervan for 'off-grid' travel, as it comes with hot water, a large fridge, a toilet, ample water, and a large gas supply. We also never had any issues with the electricity, thanks to the solar panel. All windows can be blacked out at night. We highly recommend Joao's campervan. Communication was smooth throughout, too! Thank you very much!
