Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Thuringia

Thuringia — a region worth exploring

Thuringia's Rennsteig trail stretches 169 km along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, making it Germany's oldest and most popular long-distance hiking path. This central German state packs an extraordinary amount of history and nature into a compact area. Erfurt, the capital, is home to the Krämerbrücke, the longest inhabited bridge in Europe, while Weimar — just 25 km away — draws visitors to the Bauhaus Museum and the homes of Goethe and Schiller. From Weimar, it is roughly 130 km south-west to the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German. The landscape shifts from the forested hills of the Thuringian Forest to the open farmland of the Thuringian Basin, with the Saale Valley carving through the east of the region. Narrow roads wind through villages and past reservoirs like the Bleilochtalsperre, Germany's largest artificial lake by volume. These varied routes are ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome, with plenty of well-maintained stopovers along the way. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Thuringia — in Erfurt, Jena, or smaller towns — choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style and group size. It is a practical, personal way to discover a region that rewards slow, flexible travel.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Thuringia, when forest trails and open-air attractions are at their best. The Weimarer Zwiebelmarkt in October, one of Germany's oldest folk festivals, is a memorable stop. Summer brings long days perfect for driving the Rennsteig route, while September and early October offer golden autumn colours across the Thuringian Forest. Campsites throughout the region are fully open from spring to autumn. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of May or September often means more choice and better peer-to-peer rates on motorhome hire.

Simone and his partner were very nice and friendly, eager to get to know everything about the motorhome. They were very attentive and considerate during the handover, as well as easy to communicate with throughout their trip. They treated my motorhome with care and respect and certainly did their best to return it in the condition in which they received it. It was a pleasure having them as my guests, and I highly recommend them to other owners.
