Why choose Rennes for your road trip

Rennes — a city worth exploring

Rennes sits at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers and is home to the Parlement de Bretagne, a 17th-century courthouse that survived a devastating fire in 1994 and was painstakingly restored over a decade. The old town is a maze of half-timbered houses, with over 280 colourful medieval façades lining streets like Rue Saint-Michel and Place des Lices, where one of France's largest Saturday markets fills the square each week. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes holds works by Rubens and Picasso, while the Parc du Thabor — a 10-hectare botanical garden — offers rose collections and formal French landscaping right in the city centre. For science fans, the Espace des Sciences at Les Champs Libres features a planetarium and interactive exhibits. Rennes also makes a superb base for wider exploration: Mont-Saint-Michel is roughly 80 km to the north-east, and the beaches of Saint-Malo sit about 75 km to the north-west, both easy drives in a campervan. The surrounding Breton countryside is gentle and well-served by wide national roads, making it comfortable territory for larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in Rennes, which means flexible pick-up points across the city and genuine tips on the best routes through Brittany. Rennes rewards those who take the time to wander its streets and use it as a launchpad for the Breton coast.

Best time to visit

Rennes is a wonderful destination throughout the year. The Festival des Tombées de la Nuit in early July fills the city with open-air performances and street art, while the Trans Musicales festival in early December draws music lovers from across Europe. Summer months offer long daylight hours ideal for combining city sightseeing with coastal drives to Saint-Malo. Spring and autumn bring comfortable temperatures for exploring Brittany's countryside by campervan, with quieter campsites and more availability. Booking through Yescapa gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer pricing, especially outside peak summer weeks. Plan ahead for July and August to secure the best choice of vehicles in Rennes.

Where to park your motorhome

Rennes has several options for parking larger vehicles, though the city centre's medieval streets are narrow, so it is best to park on the outskirts and use the metro or bus. Overnight parking in a motorhome on public roads is generally permitted for one night unless local signs state otherwise. Always check for height barriers before entering underground car parks. The dedicated aire de services near the ring road offers water and waste disposal for self-contained vehicles.

  • Parking Relais Villejean-Université, 4km northwest — Free park-and-ride next to the metro line A, with open-air spaces suitable for campervans. Direct metro access to the city centre in 10 minutes.
  • Parking Relais La Poterie, 5km southeast — Park-and-ride at the eastern end of metro line A. Open surface car park with no height restrictions, ideal for motorhomes. Free with a metro ticket.
  • Aire de Camping-Car de Rennes, 6km south — Dedicated motorhome service area south of the ring road with fresh water, grey water disposal and electricity. Flat tarmac surface with space for up to 20 vehicles.

It was our 1st time in a Caravan, and we feel very fortunate that we have done it with Jeremy & Annabella, their Caravan is exactly as decribed in the pictures, in a perfect mechanical situation, we had 0 problens through the whole joirney, and we were 6 people in that Caravan, I have no doubt that we will reserve it again in the future. The check in and out went completely smoove with Jeremy, you can feel free to trust them!

Great, responsible, and responsive owner. Van is equipped as advertised. The refrigerator loses its battery fast when van is turned off, so it caused some issues overnight in hot weather. Cars engine is a bit weak when driving uphill, but never caused any real issues. Great choice if you want a small van for exploring towns and coast of Andalusia.

Absolutely recommended renter. Really kind and nice people. They gave back the van clean in and out, so big respect to you guys. Thanks for your rent.

Very nice camper that has a lot of comfort for travelling Mallorca. One star less due toSlow/difficult communication with the owner, who only started to confirm our messages/questions 1 day before the actual start of the trip, The fact that the agreed pick-up time was not respected (and not communicated before we arrived on the airport) and got delayed with 1,5 h.Do know that towels and linnen are available in the camper (or they were at least for us), so no need to bring them.

Fantastic experience renting Dirk’s camper van! Pick-up and drop-off were exactly as we wished—very flexible both in time and location, which we really appreciated. The van was perfect for four adults: spacious, spotlessly clean, and excellently equipped with everything we needed and more. It was also very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. Dirk provided a very handy e-book with all the essential information about the van, which made everything even easier.A pure pleasure from beginning to end—we would definitely rent from Dirk again!

Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.
