Porto's iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, has connected the city's two riverbanks across the Douro since 1886. This northern Portuguese city rewards those who explore on wheels, from the tiled façades of the Ribeira district to the soaring nave of the Igreja dos Clérigos, topped by a tower offering panoramic views at 76 metres high. Culture lovers can spend hours at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, set within 18 hectares of landscaped gardens, while book enthusiasts will recognise Livraria Lello, one of the world's most celebrated bookshops. The Atlantic coast is never far away — Matosinhos beach sits just 10 km northwest, perfect for a seafood lunch after a morning stroll on the sand. Heading south, the laid-back lagoon city of Aveiro is roughly 75 km away, easily reached for a day trip through gentle coastal terrain. Porto's compact centre can feel busy, but the surrounding roads open up quickly, giving you the freedom to park along the coast or follow the Douro Valley inland through terraced vineyards. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner in the Porto area, which means flexible pick-up points and genuine tips on where to go. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to discover Porto and the wider north of Portugal at your own pace.
Porto welcomes visitors comfortably from April through October. June brings the Festa de São João on the night of the 23rd, when the whole city celebrates with street parties, grilled sardines and paper lanterns — book your campervan early, as it is the most popular local event of the year. September and October offer warm days, quieter campsites and easier parking near the Douro Valley vineyards during harvest season. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes hiring a motorhome more affordable outside July and August, so a spring or autumn trip to Porto can be excellent value.
Porto is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 85 km southeast to Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal. Explore the Paço dos Duques de Bragança and walk up to Guimarães Castle, a 10th-century fortress. Stop in Braga on the way back to visit the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary. Campervan parking is available near the historic centre.
Drive 75 km south to Aveiro, known for its colourful moliceiro boats gliding through canal-laced streets. Visit the Museu de Aveiro and taste the local ovos moles pastries. The Costa Nova beach, with its striped houses, is just 10 km further west. Motorhome spaces are easy to find near the lagoon.
Follow the N108 and N222 for 130 km east into the heart of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards. Stop at Peso da Régua for the Museu do Douro and continue to Pinhão to admire its azulejo-covered railway station. Campervan-friendly spots dot the riverbanks.
Travel 160 km northeast to Portugal's only national park. Hike to the Cascata do Arado waterfall and swim in the natural pools of Río Caldo. The village of Soajo is worth a visit for its ancient stone granaries. Roads are winding but well-maintained — hire a compact campervan for easier access.
Cover 310 km south along the Silver Coast, stopping at Figueira da Foz for wide sandy beaches and Óbidos for its medieval walled town. Detour to Nazaré to watch the famous big waves from the Farol da Nazaré lighthouse. Plenty of motorhome service areas line the A1 and coastal roads towards Lisbon.
Head 250 km northeast into the remote Trás-os-Montes region. Visit the Citadela de Bragança, a 12th-century hilltop fortress, and explore the Parque Natural de Montesinho for wolf-watching trails. Stop in Mirandela for its Roman bridge and local alheira sausage. Campervan-friendly aires are spaced along the route.

The Porto region offers a good mix of coastal and riverside campsites, many with full hook-ups for both campervans and motorhomes. Along the Atlantic shore north and south of the city, you will find sites with direct beach access, while inland options closer to the Douro Valley provide a quieter setting among vineyards. Most campsites include electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles, making Porto a practical base for touring northern Portugal.
Parking a motorhome or campervan in Porto requires some planning, as the city centre has narrow streets and limited space for larger vehicles. Overnight parking in public areas is generally tolerated if you remain self-contained and do not set up camp. Several dedicated areas around the city offer services for recreational vehicles, including water refill and waste disposal. Always check local signage for height and weight restrictions before parking.
Exceptional experience, I highly recommend it! Nuno is responsive, attentive and genuinely caring: he picked us up at the airport and provided us with a comprehensive list of must-see spots to explore the island, eat and sleep. Thanks to him, we discovered Madeira in a truly unique and authentic way. An unforgettable trip, made possible in large part by his invaluable help.
Great trip in this Vintage van! This is a old van, be aware of it, but everything work and the experience was really smooth. Pedro is very helpful and professional with his van. Strongly recommend for the vintage experience van life
Car is “hursh but fair”. Need a few km to grab a feeling but than you cruise. We went 900 km in n all kind of conditions and it was all good. All is in working order as described and not too long so you fit in a parking spot.
Everything went perfectly well, despite the breakdown of our car, the customer behaved very well and the customer. I can only recommend it.
Personne de confiance ! Location qui s’est très bien passé ! Je recommande
