Norte is home to Portugal's only national park, Peneda-Gerês, where granite peaks rise above 1,400 metres and ancient oak forests line valleys carved by the Cávado and Lima rivers. The region stretches from the Atlantic coastline around Viana do Castelo inland to the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that produces the country's famous port wine. Porto, the regional capital, sits at the mouth of the River Douro and is known for its Ribeira district, Livraria Lello bookshop, and the Dom Luís I Bridge. From Porto to Bragança in the far northeast, the drive covers roughly 255 km, crossing rolling highlands and remote villages in Trás-os-Montes. Heading north from Porto to Viana do Castelo is a shorter 74 km coastal run, ideal for a relaxed day trip by campervan. The landscape shifts dramatically across Norte — flat sandy beaches give way to river gorges, then to mountain plateaux — making it a region that rewards slow, flexible travel. A motorhome lets you wake up beside the Douro one morning and camp near a mountain lake the next. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners spread across cities like Porto, Braga, and Guimarães, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and personal tips from people who know Norte best.
The best time to hire a campervan in Norte runs from May to October, when warm days make both coastal and mountain routes enjoyable. June is ideal for the Festa de São João in Porto, a lively celebration with bonfires, music, and street parties on the night of the 23rd. September and October bring the grape harvest season in the Douro Valley, with many quintas opening their doors to visitors. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months like May or October often means better peer-to-peer rates and quieter campsites across Norte. Plan ahead for July and August, the most popular months, to secure the motorhome or campervan that suits your group.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 180 km route follows Norte's Atlantic coast from Porto north to Caminha near the Spanish border. Stop at Viana do Castelo for its hilltop basilica and Moledo's wide sandy beach. A campervan is perfect for the relaxed pace, with coastal campsites dotted along the way.
A 200 km loop through Norte's lush interior, starting in Guimarães — the birthplace of Portugal. Visit Braga's Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary and the traditional villages of the Minho countryside. Well-surfaced roads make this route comfortable for any motorhome size.
Covering 350 km along the Douro Valley, this route links Peso da Régua to the Spanish border near Miranda do Douro. Expect terraced vineyards, river viewpoints, and port wine tastings at family-run quintas. Campervan-friendly stops are plentiful beside the river.
A 400 km journey into Norte's remote northeast, from Vila Real to Bragança and the Montesinho Natural Park. The landscape shifts to high plateaux and chestnut forests. Quieter roads and wild camping spots suit travellers seeking solitude in a compact campervan.
This 550 km circuit connects Porto, Peneda-Gerês National Park, Chaves, and the Douro Valley in one loop. Mix mountain trails with vineyard visits and city culture. A motorhome with good storage is ideal for the week-long adventure across varied terrain.
The full 600 km experience takes in Norte's coastline from Espinho to Caminha, the peaks of Gerês, and the Douro Valley's wine country. Allow 10 to 15 days to explore at a relaxed pace. Campsites and service areas are well spread across the entire route.

Norte offers a good spread of campsites from the Atlantic coast to the mountain interior. Coastal parks near Viana do Castelo and Póvoa de Varzim provide direct beach access and full hook-ups for motorhomes. Inland, sites around Peneda-Gerês National Park sit among forests and rivers, with pitches suited to campervans of all sizes. Most campsites across Norte include electricity, water, showers, and waste disposal points, so you can travel the region comfortably.
Portugal's motorways in Norte are mostly toll roads. The A1 (Porto to Lisbon) and A3 (Porto to the Spanish border) use electronic tolling, so you will need a Via Verde device or purchase a prepaid toll card at a post office. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. Rest areas with fuel, toilets, and parking for larger vehicles appear regularly along the A1 and A4. Some inland roads in Trás-os-Montes are narrower two-lane routes, so allow extra time when driving a larger campervan through the northeast.
All went well!
Ok
We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
Todo genial. Gracias
Lucia and her friends were fantastic guests! They rented our VW campervan and took great care of it throughout their journey. If they ever wish to return, they are always more than welcome back anytime! Warm regards, Danijel
