Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Montana

Montana — a region worth exploring

Montana's Going-to-the-Sun Road stretches 80 km through Glacier National Park, climbing over 2,000 metres at Logan Pass and ranking among the most celebrated mountain drives in North America. From the vast plains of the eastern prairies to the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountain Front, Montana covers over 380,000 square kilometres — making it the fourth-largest US state yet one of the least densely populated. The drive from Missoula to Billings spans roughly 540 km, crossing the Continental Divide and passing through the university town of Bozeman along the way. Heading north from Bozeman to Whitefish covers around 480 km, taking you from the Gallatin Valley into the Flathead Lake region, home to the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Yellowstone National Park sits at Montana's southern border, where geysers, hot springs and roaming bison draw visitors year-round. Meanwhile, the charming streets of Helena, the state capital, and the historic mining city of Butte offer a window into Montana's frontier past. Wide-open highways and well-spaced towns make this state ideal for campervan and motorhome travel, with plenty of room to breathe between stops. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Montana, choosing from a range of vehicles suited to mountain passes or prairie cruising — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and flexible.

Best time to visit

Montana's prime touring season runs from June to September, when Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open and campgrounds across the state welcome visitors. The Montana Folk Festival in Butte each July draws thousands with free live music over three days, while the Crow Fair near Billings in August is one of the largest Native American gatherings in the country. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during shoulder months like June or September often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing from local owners. Plan ahead for July and August, the most popular months for motorhome travel through Glacier and Yellowstone.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Montana

Montana has no toll roads, so you can travel the entire state without paying highway fees. Interstate 90 runs east–west across the southern half, while Interstate 15 connects the state north to south. Speed limits on interstates are typically 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes and larger vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are often limited to 105 km/h — always check posted signs. Mountain passes such as Lookout Pass and MacDonald Pass may require lower gears and extra caution in a campervan. Rest areas are well spaced along major routes, and many offer overnight parking for self-contained vehicles.

I had an absolutely fantastic experience renting Marco’s campervan in Portugal! The van is beautiful, extremely comfortable, and incredibly well equipped — honestly, it has everything you could possibly need for an amazing trip. You can really tell that a lot of care and attention has gone into making it feel like a home on the road. But what made the experience even better was Marco himself. He is extremely professional, kind, helpful, and always available whenever you need anything. From the first contact to the end of the trip, everything was smooth, easy, and stress-free. I couldn’t have asked for a better campervan or a better host. I would 100% recommend Marco and his van to anyone looking for an unforgettable road trip in Portugal. I would definitely rent from him again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Communication with the owner was great. The car absolutely met all our expectations for the trip. Amenities included a camping stove, solar shower, cooking supplies, blankets, bedding, and lots more. The car is in excellent mechanical condition and has low fuel consumption. We used about 75% of the tank over a distance of approximately 800 km. Very fuel-efficient. Ideal for a couple traveling together—we highly recommend it.
