Coimbra's University, founded in 1290, is one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city rises steeply from the banks of the River Mondego, with narrow medieval lanes winding up to the hilltop campus where the Joanine Library houses over 300,000 volumes. Beyond academia, Coimbra offers the Machado de Castro National Museum, the Romanesque Sé Velha cathedral, and the serene Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, perched across the river, provides sweeping views of the old town. Aveiro, known for its canal boats, sits just 60 km north, while the Serra da Lousã mountains begin only 30 km to the southeast, offering forested trails and traditional schist villages. The Mondego valley and surrounding hills make for rewarding drives, though some routes through older neighbourhoods are narrow — a good reason to plan your stops in advance. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Coimbra area, giving you the flexibility to explore central Portugal at your own pace while benefiting from peer-to-peer pricing and personal recommendations from people who know the region best.
Coimbra is a rewarding destination year-round. Spring brings the Queima das Fitas in May, a week-long student festival with parades and live music that fills the city with energy. Autumn is ideal for exploring the Mondego valley with fewer visitors and comfortable driving conditions. Summer is the most popular season, so booking your campervan early on Yescapa ensures the best choice of vehicles from local owners. Winter in Coimbra is mild compared to northern Europe, and the university quarter feels especially atmospheric. Campsites in the region generally operate all year, making it easy to plan a trip in any season.
Coimbra is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Aveiro sits 60 km north of Coimbra and charms with its colourful moliceiro boats gliding along the Ria de Aveiro. Visit Praia da Barra with its 62-metre lighthouse and stroll through the Art Nouveau quarter. Well-equipped campervan pitches line the coast nearby.
Tomar lies 80 km southeast of Coimbra along well-maintained roads. The Convento de Cristo, once the headquarters of the Knights Templar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes and the historic town centre. Motorhome parking is available close to the old quarter.
The Costa de Prata stretches roughly 130 km west of Coimbra along the Atlantic. Stop at Figueira da Foz for surfing and wide sandy beaches, then continue to Nazaré, famous for its giant waves at Praia do Norte. At São Martinho do Porto, a shell-shaped bay awaits. Seaside campsites offer pitches with ocean views for your campervan.
Lisbon lies roughly 195 km south of Coimbra and is easily reached via the A1 motorway. Along the way, stop at Fátima, one of Europe's most important pilgrimage sites. In Lisbon, explore the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém. Motorhome pitches are available at Parque de Campismo de Monsanto on the city's western edge.
Porto sits 120 km north of Coimbra, but this trip continues into the Douro Valley for a total of around 310 km. In Porto, visit Livraria Lello and the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Along the Douro, reach Peso da Régua and Pinhão with their terraced vineyards. Campervan stopovers are available at several quintas along the river.
This route covers around 400 km northeast of Coimbra through Portugal's mountainous interior. First stop is Serra da Estrela, home to Torre at 1,993 metres, the highest point on the mainland. Continue to Belmonte and the historic village of Sortelha. In Bragança, a medieval citadel awaits. Mountain roads are well surfaced and suitable for motorhome travel throughout.

Around Coimbra, you will find campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Options range from nature-focused sites in the Mondego valley to facilities with swimming pools and modern amenity blocks. Many offer electric hook-ups, Wi-Fi and waste disposal points. Some sit right beside the river, while others nestle in the wooded hills nearby — all making excellent bases for day trips across the region.
Coimbra offers several parking options suitable for larger vehicles. The city centre operates metered short-stay zones, so it is worth heading to car parks on the outskirts instead. Overnight stays in vehicles are generally not permitted on public car parks — use designated motorhome areas or the municipal campsite for that. Watch for height restrictions in multi-storey car parks, as many cannot accommodate motorhomes or campervans.
Everything was perfect, the communication with the owner was very smooth and we really appreciated the friendly approach and the help that he offered to us. Would definitely recommend! ☺️
Cedric was very communicative and informative before the rental ans answered all our questions. The camper van itself was exactly as listed
All went well!
Ok
We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
Todo genial. Gracias
