Why choose Nazaré for your road trip

Nazaré — a city worth exploring

Nazaré holds the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed — a towering 26.21-metre wall of water ridden by Sebastian Steudtner in 2020. This fishing town on Portugal's Silver Coast draws visitors year-round to the Praia do Norte, where the Nazaré Canyon funnels Atlantic swells into record-breaking surf. Beyond the waves, the Sítio da Nazaré clifftop quarter offers panoramic views from the Miradouro do Suberco, reached by a 19th-century funicular. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré houses centuries of maritime devotion, while the Museu Dr. Joaquim Manso tells the story of local traditions and fishing heritage. Stroll through the old town to see fish drying on wooden racks — a scene unchanged for generations. Coimbra lies 120 km to the north-east, and Óbidos, with its medieval walled centre, is just 38 km south. The coastal roads around Nazaré are well-suited to larger vehicles, with wide routes connecting beaches and villages along the Atlantic. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa means you can pick up from a local owner nearby, often saving on depot fees and getting first-hand tips on where to park up with ocean views. A motorhome gives you the freedom to wake up to the sound of the sea and explore the coast at your own pace. Nazaré rewards those who take their time — from fresh seafood at the harbour to sunsets over the Atlantic.

Best time to visit

Nazaré is a year-round destination, though each season brings something different. The big-wave season runs from October to March, when surfers from around the world flock to Praia do Norte — the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge usually takes place between November and February. Summer months are ideal for beach days and the Festas da Nossa Senhora da Nazaré in September fill the town with processions, folk music and local food. Campervan availability through Yescapa tends to be greatest in spring and autumn, when peer-to-peer prices are often lower and coastal campsites have more open pitches. Book ahead for July and August to secure your preferred motorhome.

Super nice and friendly owners. Available and easy communication. Well prepared video tutorials. The campervan itself is super good, it had some small issues due to the recent high demand and workshops being on holidays, but they were totally upfront and transparent about each single detail. Nothing that harmed any of the experience. Totally recommend!! :)

Feeling right at home Traveling across Portugal with Koda was a perfect, unique, and wonderful experience ☺️ Carina and Rafaela met us right at the airport and explained everything about the van—covering every detail clearly and effectively. We had never taken an off-the-cuff trip like this before; without any set plans, we drove all the way to Sagres, navigating easily through narrow roads, campsites, and stunning beaches 😍 Its compact size makes it comfortable to drive almost immediately, allowing for effortless maneuvering even on narrow roads, whether driving uphill or on light off-road terrain. The van is fully equipped: it has kitchenware, a sink, a convenient handheld shower, and even a solar shower, plus two camping chairs and an easy-to-assemble table. The bed is incredibly comfortable, and when not in use, it converts into a small bench. It was easy and delightful to feel right at home during this vacation; we can’t wait to return to Portugal to explore the north with Koda 🧡
