The Alps stretch across eight European countries, but it is in France where the range reaches its highest point — Mont Blanc, standing at 4,808 metres above sea level. The French Alps cover a vast area from Lake Geneva in the north to the sun-drenched hills of Provence in the south, a distance of roughly 350 kilometres. This diversity makes the region ideal for exploring by road, with routes winding through deep valleys, past glacial lakes, and over legendary mountain passes like the Col du Galibier and the Col de l'Iseran, the highest paved pass in the Alps at 2,770 metres. Towns such as Annecy, Chamonix, Grenoble, and Briançon each offer a distinct character, from lakeside charm to high-altitude adventure. The drive from Annecy to Gap covers around 190 kilometres and crosses some of the most rewarding scenery in the region. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for navigating narrow alpine roads or a fully equipped motorhome for longer stays at lakeside aires, the French Alps reward every style of travel. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across the region, giving you flexible pick-up points and a wide choice of vehicles suited to mountain touring. It is a practical, personal way to discover the Alps at your own pace.
The French Alps welcome travellers from late spring through to early autumn, with June to September offering the best conditions for campervan and motorhome touring. Most high-altitude passes, including the Col du Galibier and the Col de l'Iseran, open in June and remain accessible until October. July brings the Tour de France through the Alps, a thrilling spectacle to witness from the roadside. In September, the Fête des Alpages in Annecy celebrates the traditional descent of cattle from summer pastures, with local food and music. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months like June or September often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer rates compared to the busiest weeks of summer.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Starting from Annecy, this 180 km route circles Lac d'Annecy before heading into the Aravis range via the Col des Aravis. Stop at La Clusaz for mountain walks and Talloires for lakeside relaxation. The roads suit a campervan perfectly, with plenty of small aires along the way for overnight stays.
This 250 km route links Grenoble to Chambéry through two regional natural parks. Explore the Monastère de la Grande Chartreuse and the Lac du Bourget, France's largest natural lake. Quiet roads and well-maintained campervan stops make this a relaxing short trip through the Alps' gentler side.
Covering 350 km from Albertville to Val d'Isère and back through the Maurienne valley, this route passes through the Parc National de la Vanoise. Visit Bonneval-sur-Arc, one of France's most beautiful villages, and cross the Col de l'Iseran. A motorhome under 7 metres handles the passes comfortably, with service areas in Bourg-Saint-Maurice.
This 400 km stretch runs from Thonon-les-Bains on Lake Geneva to Briançon, following part of the famous Route des Grandes Alpes. Cross the Col du Galibier and Col du Lautaret, stopping at Megève and Valloire along the way. Campervan-friendly aires are available in most valley towns throughout the Alps.
This 550 km circuit starts in Chamonix, loops through the Aosta Valley in Italy and Martigny in Switzerland before returning via Megève. Take in views of the Mer de Glace, the Great St Bernard Pass, and the Gorges de l'Arveyron. A motorhome with good clearance is recommended for border crossings and alpine tunnels across the Alps.
Spanning 700 km from Évian-les-Bains to Menton on the Mediterranean, this is the complete Route des Grandes Alpes experience. Pass through Beaufort, the Écrins massif, and the Gorges du Cians before reaching the coast. With over a dozen major cols, plan for slow driving days and book campervan pitches in advance during summer in the Alps.

The French Alps offer a wide range of campsites spread from the shores of Lake Geneva to the southern foothills near Gap. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find pitches with full hook-ups, service points, and modern sanitary facilities. Many sites sit beside lakes or rivers, while others are tucked into mountain valleys with direct access to hiking trails. Here are some well-regarded options across the Alps.
Most motorways in the French Alps are toll roads, including the A40 (Autoroute Blanche) towards Chamonix and the A41 connecting Grenoble to Chambéry. Tolls can be paid by card or cash at booths, and a télépéage tag speeds up the process for frequent users. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Mountain sections often feature steep gradients and long tunnels — the Fréjus and Mont Blanc tunnels require advance booking for larger vehicles and charge higher fees based on vehicle height. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well distributed along major routes.
