Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Trentino-South Tyrol

Trentino-South Tyrol — a region worth exploring

Trentino-Alto Adige is home to the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range whose 18 peaks rise above 3,000 metres, making it one of Europe's most rewarding regions to explore on four wheels. The region stretches from the Brenner Pass on the Austrian border south to Lake Garda, covering roughly 13,600 square kilometres of alpine valleys, orchards and high plateaux. From Bolzano to Trento, the two provincial capitals separated by just 60 km of motorway, the landscape shifts from German-speaking South Tyrol to Italian-speaking Trentino, each with its own cuisine, architecture and traditions. Landmarks such as the Messner Mountain Museum on Kronplatz, the medieval Castel Beseno near Rovereto, and the Stelvio National Park offer a mix of culture and wilderness that rewards slow travel. The drive from Riva del Garda at the region's southern tip to Vipiteno in the north covers around 180 km and passes through dramatically different climates and scenery. Wide valley roads and well-maintained mountain passes make Trentino-Alto Adige ideal for both campervans and larger motorhomes, with plenty of designated overnight areas along the way. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit alpine roads and lakeside stopovers alike.

Best time to visit

Trentino-Alto Adige welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering something distinct. June to September is the most popular window for campervan travel, when mountain passes are fully open and alpine meadows are in bloom. The Merano Grape Festival in October celebrates the local harvest with parades and tastings, while the famous Bolzano Christmas Market runs from late November through December. Spring arrives gently in April, with apple blossoms filling the valleys around Val di Non. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months like May or early October often means more competitive peer-to-peer pricing and quieter campsites across Trentino-Alto Adige. We recommend reserving your motorhome or campervan well ahead for July and August to secure the best choice of vehicles.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Trentino-South Tyrol

Trentino-Alto Adige is crossed by the A22 Brenner motorway, which runs north–south connecting Austria to the Po Valley. Tolls are collected at barriers and can be paid by cash, card or Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as heavy vehicles and pay higher toll rates. The speed limit on motorways for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes is 130 km/h, dropping to 100 km/h for heavier motorhomes. Many mountain passes, including the Stelvio and Passo Sella, have width and weight restrictions, so check signage before setting off. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well distributed along the A22.
