Why hire a campervan or motorhome in North Rhine-Westphalia

North Rhine-Westphalia — a region worth exploring

Nordrhein-Westfalen is home to the Ruhr area, once Europe's largest industrial zone, now reinvented as a cultural landscape with over 200 museums, theatres, and concert halls spread across 53 cities. From the towering spire of Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the serene waters of Lake Bigge in the Sauerland hills, this western German state offers a remarkable mix of urban energy and green escapes. The 480-kilometre Rhine cycle path traces the river through Bonn, Düsseldorf, and Duisburg, while the Teutoburg Forest stretches across the northeast, where the iconic Externsteine rock formation rises dramatically from the woodland floor. Driving from Münster in the north to Aachen in the southwest covers roughly 220 kilometres, passing through rolling Münsterland countryside dotted with moated castles. Head east from Cologne to the Eifel National Park and you will cover around 80 kilometres of well-maintained roads ideal for larger vehicles. Nordrhein-Westfalen's flat to gently hilly terrain makes it particularly welcoming for campervan and motorhome travel, with wide roads and well-signposted routes throughout. Whether you fancy exploring the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen or paddling along the Ruhr river, a campervan gives you the flexibility to combine city culture with countryside calm. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Nordrhein-Westfalen, choosing from a wide range of motorhomes and campervans that suit your group and your route.

Best time to visit

Booking through Yescapa during spring or autumn often means more competitive peer-to-peer pricing and quieter campsites across Nordrhein-Westfalen. Reserve your motorhome a few weeks ahead for summer travel to secure the best choice of vehicles.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia

Motorways in Nordrhein-Westfalen are toll-free for all vehicles, including motorhomes and campervans. The region has one of Germany's densest Autobahn networks, with major routes like the A1, A2, and A3 intersecting near Cologne and Dortmund. While some stretches have no speed limit for cars, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking and service points appear regularly along main routes. Watch for low-emission zones (Umweltzonen) in cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Essen — you will need a green emissions sticker to enter.

Martino and his friends were great guests! There were some issues with the motorhome but they communicated very professionally and respectfully all the time. We provide a replacement vehicle for them. They treated the motorhome as their own and took great care of it. Totally recommend them!

Really great rental, campervan was in great condition and very well kept. Easy to collect and the staff were very helpful despite my lack of French. We loved driving the van, it was so easy get around and to set up when we arrived at campsites. Some bedding might have been useful but a Hypermarket was not far away to stock up on that and food. Thanks for the great experience :o)

A fantastic experience from beginning to end. The owner was incredibly kind, available, professional and genuinely a pleasure to deal with. Everything was extremely easy and smooth throughout the entire process: the communication before our trip, the pick-up, the week we spent with the motorhome, the drop-off and even the communication afterwards. The motorhome itself was a 10/10. It was practically brand new, in excellent condition, very comfortable and perfectly equipped for our trip. At pick-up, the owner took plenty of time to give us a thorough walkthrough and explain how everything worked. He also pointed out the more delicate parts of the vehicle and what we should pay particular attention to. We really appreciated this because it helped us understand the motorhome properly and take better care of it throughout our trip. More than anything, the whole experience felt easy and trustworthy. A beautiful motorhome and an excellent owner who genuinely cares about both his vehicle and the people renting it. We would happily rent from him again and can highly recommend him to anyone considering this motorhome.
