Why choose Portland for your road trip

Portland — a city worth exploring

Portland's iconic Powell's City of Books spans an entire city block, housing over a million volumes across 3,500 square feet of retail space. The city sits at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, offering easy access to forests, coastline, and volcanic peaks. Explore the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, wander the stalls of Portland Saturday Market, or take in contemporary art at the Portland Art Museum. The Japanese Garden, perched in the West Hills, is widely regarded as one of the most authentic outside Japan. For day trips, Mount Hood stands just 95 km to the east, while the dramatic Oregon Coast begins roughly 130 km to the west. Portland's grid layout and well-maintained highways make it a comfortable city to navigate in a larger vehicle, though the hilly West Hills area requires some care. The surrounding Columbia River Gorge offers spectacular driving routes with plenty of pull-offs for campervan travellers. If you're planning to hire a motorhome for your Pacific Northwest adventure, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners through its peer-to-peer platform. That means you can pick up a campervan right in Portland, often at more flexible rates than traditional agencies, and set off on your own schedule.

Best time to visit

Portland shines from June to September, when dry skies and warm temperatures make it ideal for campervan touring. The Portland Rose Festival runs through June with parades, dragon boat races, and live music across the city. In July, the Waterfront Blues Festival draws crowds to Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Booking a motorhome through Yescapa during these months gives you access to peer-to-peer pricing, which can be more affordable than peak-season fleet hire. Autumn brings golden foliage along the Columbia River Gorge, and campsites are easier to reserve. Winter and spring suit travellers who enjoy quieter roads and lush green landscapes.

Where to park your motorhome

Portland uses the SmartPark garage system in the city centre, offering affordable hourly rates for shorter vehicles. Larger motorhomes and campervans may face height restrictions in covered garages, so check clearance before entering. Street parking downtown has time limits and metered zones. For oversized vehicles, dedicated RV parks on the city's outskirts are the safest option for overnight stays, as overnight parking on public streets is restricted in many Portland neighbourhoods.

  • SmartPark Garage – 10th & Yamhill, Adjacent to the city — Central downtown garage with affordable hourly rates. Height limit of around 1.98 m — suitable for smaller campervans only.
  • SmartPark Garage – 3rd & Alder, Adjacent to the city — Well-located garage near Pioneer Courthouse Square. Same height restrictions apply, so best for compact vehicles.
  • Jantzen Beach RV Park, 12km north — Full-service RV park on Hayden Island in north Portland. Accepts motorhomes and large campervans with full hook-ups and overnight stays.

It was a pleasure meeting Fernando and his girlfriend. They were friendly, respectful, considerate, and took excellent care of the motorhome. They returned it clean and exactly as expected, and everything went smoothly from start to finish. I would gladly rent to them again and highly recommend them to other owners.

It was unbelievable from the very beginning))) first of all - the owner! Pedro made this perfect 4x4 Jeep by himself, and he gave all the stuff he use by himself during our trip) we just don’t take the solar panels, because we prefer not to stay for a long time in one spots) So the kitchen, the shower, roof top living area and A coffee machine almost))) that was really incredible to have it with us and to use it during our trip! Moreother Pedro was available during the rental period and before our trip he send us some great spots to stay and very quit and awesome route in the heart of Portugal! So we are thinking about the next experience with him and his Jeep. Definitely will come back for another trip! Thanks 🤗

———— We had a great experience renting the camper van from Adrià. Communication was excellent from the beginning—he was always quick to respond and very flexible with timings and anything we needed. The van was exactly as shown in the photos, in great condition, and we had no issues throughout our trip. We would definitely recommend renting from him and would happily do it again.
