The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Poitiers sits on a limestone plateau above the confluence of the Clain and Boivre rivers, and its Baptistère Saint-Jean, dating from the 4th century, is one of the oldest Christian buildings in France. The old town rewards exploration on foot, with landmarks like the Église Notre-Dame la Grande and its richly carved Romanesque façade, the Palais des Ducs d'Aquitaine, and the Musée Sainte-Croix, home to prehistoric and fine-art collections. Just 12 km south, Futuroscope is a theme park built around multimedia and motion-based attractions, making it a brilliant family stop. Châtellerault lies 36 km to the north, offering riverside walks along the Vienne and the Musée Auto Moto Vélo. The roads around Poitiers are wide and well-maintained, with gentle terrain that suits all vehicle sizes — ideal for a first motorhome trip. Surrounding countryside is a patchwork of sunflower fields and quiet villages, so you can park up and enjoy the calm without battling tight mountain passes. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you with local owners in the Poitiers area, giving you flexible pick-up options and personal tips on the best routes. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs fair while letting you set off at your own pace to discover the Vienne département and beyond.
Poitiers comes alive in summer when Futuroscope extends its evening shows and the Festival des Expressifs fills the old town with street performance each June. Autumn is equally rewarding, with the Poitiers Film Festival in late November and quieter roads through the Vienne countryside. Campervan travellers will find plenty of well-serviced stopovers open from April to October, and booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better peer-to-peer rates. We recommend reserving your motorhome early for July and August, the most popular season, to lock in the widest choice of vehicles from local owners in the Poitiers area.
Poitiers is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head south-west from Poitiers through the rolling Charente vineyards to Cognac, roughly 85 km away. Visit the Musée des Arts du Cognac and take a distillery tour at Hennessy. Campervan parking is easy along the river, and Ruffec makes a pleasant lunch stop en route.
Drive 60 km north-west from Poitiers to the medieval town of Parthenay, known for its fortified gateway, the Porte Saint-Jacques. Explore the Quartier Saint-Paul and the riverside path along the Thouet. Motorhome service points are available at the aire near the town centre.
This 150 km route west from Poitiers leads to the Atlantic port of La Rochelle. Stop at Niort to see the Donjon and the Marais Poitevin wetlands before reaching the coast. La Rochelle's Vieux Port and the Aquarium are well worth a full day. Campervan-friendly aires dot the route.
Travel 120 km south from Poitiers to Limoges, the porcelain capital. Break the journey at Bellac for its Romanesque church and weekly market. In Limoges, visit the Musée National Adrien Dubouché and the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne. Flat, well-signed roads make this an easy campervan drive.
A 220 km drive north-west from Poitiers takes you through the Loire Valley and into Normandy. Pause at Saumur for its château and sparkling-wine caves, then continue to Mont-Saint-Michel. Plan overnight stops at aires near Angers and Fougères to keep the pace relaxed.
Set off south-east from Poitiers on a 310 km motorhome adventure to Lyon. The route passes through Clermont-Ferrand, where the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is built from dark volcanic stone. Arrive in Lyon for the Vieux Lyon quarter and the Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse food market.

The area around Poitiers offers a good mix of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and spacious pitches for larger vehicles. Several are set in the green Vienne countryside just minutes from the city, while others sit close to Futuroscope for easy access to the park. Whether you prefer a quiet rural pitch or a family-oriented site with a pool, Poitiers and its surroundings have you covered.
Poitiers provides several options for parking a campervan or motorhome while you explore the city. A dedicated motorhome aire near the Futuroscope area offers services including water and waste disposal. In the city centre, larger car parks such as Parking Toumaï near the train station can accommodate taller vehicles on the open-air levels. Overnight parking in a motorhome is generally tolerated in designated aires but not in standard city car parks, so always check local signage. We recommend arriving early on market days to secure a spot.
Great communication from Gladys and great van! Thanks for making our trip seamless!
Nice car, friendly and helpful people
The process was simple and informative. Once we had decided from the many great options, we received a quick response. Our host was easily reachable and answered our questions to ensure the best experience on our trip. We also felt secure knowing insurance was included. We made a few adjustments to our trip, and we were easily accommodated by the owner. Our trip was beautiful, and well-equipped with everything we needed on the go. It was a lovely experience to explore and sleep where we wanted to ensure we were ready for our adventure the next day.
Nelson is 5*, great guy and great renting experience.
incredibly friendly and took the time to explain how everything worked, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable from the start. The camper van was a pleasure to drive and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. He was also available 24/7 to help with any questions and recommended some amazing routes around the island. As first-time camper van travellers, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we would absolutely do it again. It was truly an unforgettable adventure.
The camper was exactly as expected, it was clean and everything worked as it should. It drove well and was surprisingly economical considering its size. The booking process was easy but collection gave a few challenges. The renters location is wrong in the listing as there are two Sauzets in south west France. Coupled with the renter mistakenly not delivering the camper to the correct address meant we were a day late starting our trip. A refund for the missing day was immediately agreed. In all an easy experience once the pickup location was cleared up.
