Why choose Poitiers for your road trip

Poitiers — a city worth exploring

Poitiers sits on a limestone plateau above the confluence of the Clain and Boivre rivers, and its Baptistère Saint-Jean, dating from the 4th century, is one of the oldest Christian buildings in France. The old town rewards exploration on foot, with landmarks like the Église Notre-Dame la Grande and its richly carved Romanesque façade, the Palais des Ducs d'Aquitaine, and the Musée Sainte-Croix, home to prehistoric and fine-art collections. Just 12 km south, Futuroscope is a theme park built around multimedia and motion-based attractions, making it a brilliant family stop. Châtellerault lies 36 km to the north, offering riverside walks along the Vienne and the Musée Auto Moto Vélo. The roads around Poitiers are wide and well-maintained, with gentle terrain that suits all vehicle sizes — ideal for a first motorhome trip. Surrounding countryside is a patchwork of sunflower fields and quiet villages, so you can park up and enjoy the calm without battling tight mountain passes. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you with local owners in the Poitiers area, giving you flexible pick-up options and personal tips on the best routes. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs fair while letting you set off at your own pace to discover the Vienne département and beyond.

Best time to visit

Poitiers comes alive in summer when Futuroscope extends its evening shows and the Festival des Expressifs fills the old town with street performance each June. Autumn is equally rewarding, with the Poitiers Film Festival in late November and quieter roads through the Vienne countryside. Campervan travellers will find plenty of well-serviced stopovers open from April to October, and booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better peer-to-peer rates. We recommend reserving your motorhome early for July and August, the most popular season, to lock in the widest choice of vehicles from local owners in the Poitiers area.

Pepe was lovely from beginning to end. All of our requests were accommodated and he was responsive when needed. The pickup service was very nice, even though we were a bit delayed at the beginning (also around 23.30) he still patiently waited for us at the airport without a hassle. This made the beginning of the trip very nice and the small gift was consumed almost immediately, thank you once again. ;) The van was super also, the bad is very very comfy, I am 183 cms and it was perfect for my height. The AC is a very nice addition also, which made even the staying in the blazing sun bearable in the van. Would recommend both the host and the van to anyone!

We had a superb long weekend trip in Gonçalo’s converted van and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Gonçalo was a very friendly owner and always responded promptly to all our questions, which made everything easy and stress-free from the beginning. The van came with everything we needed and was very well prepared for our trip. It was comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for our family of four. Gonçalo was also incredibly helpful throughout, which we really appreciated. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend both Gonçalo and his van to anyone looking for a great family campervan experience.

Mathieu was easy to communicate with and flexible. The van is perfect- simple, well organized, and very comfortable for sleeping. Mathieu equips the kitchen with some basics, and 2 camping chairs- it is really nice.

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.
