Why choose Naples for your road trip

Naples — a city worth exploring

Napoli's underground tunnels stretch over 80 km beneath the city, carved from volcanic tuff over 2,400 years of history. This southern Italian port city sits at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, offering a dramatic backdrop for any road trip along the Campanian coast. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli houses one of the world's finest collections of Greco-Roman artefacts, while the Cappella Sansevero draws visitors with its extraordinary Veiled Christ sculpture. Wander through Spaccanapoli, the narrow street that splits the old town in two, or take in panoramic views from Castel Sant'Elmo high above the city. The Royal Palace of Napoli on Piazza del Plebiscito anchors the monumental heart of the centre. Pompeii lies just 26 km to the southeast, and the colourful cliffside town of Sorrento is roughly 50 km south along the coast — both are easy day trips when you have your own wheels. The coastal roads around the Bay of Napoli are well suited to campervans, though some stretches near the Amalfi side narrow considerably, so a compact campervan can be a smart choice. For larger groups, a motorhome gives you the space to explore at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Napoli area, which means flexible pick-up points and genuine insider tips before you even hit the road.

Best time to visit

Napoli enjoys a Mediterranean climate that makes it a rewarding destination year-round. Spring is ideal for exploring, with the Maggio dei Monumenti festival in May opening doors to historic sites not usually accessible. September brings the Festa di Piedigrotta, a beloved local celebration with music and processions near the Mergellina waterfront. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel along the coast, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a good idea. Autumn and winter offer quieter roads and easy access to campsites around Napoli, plus lower hire rates through peer-to-peer owners.

We had an excellent experience renting João’s van through Yescapa. Communication was fantastic from start to finish, and João was always quick to respond and help with anything we needed. Any questions or minor issues we had were sorted out straight away, which made the whole trip stress free. The van was the perfect size for two people travelling around Portugal. It was comfortable, easy to drive, and had everything we needed for our adventure. We would highly recommend João to anyone looking to explore Portugal by van and wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.

Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.

We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.

We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
