Napoli's underground tunnels stretch over 80 km beneath the city, carved from volcanic tuff over 2,400 years of history. This southern Italian port city sits at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, offering a dramatic backdrop for any road trip along the Campanian coast. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli houses one of the world's finest collections of Greco-Roman artefacts, while the Cappella Sansevero draws visitors with its extraordinary Veiled Christ sculpture. Wander through Spaccanapoli, the narrow street that splits the old town in two, or take in panoramic views from Castel Sant'Elmo high above the city. The Royal Palace of Napoli on Piazza del Plebiscito anchors the monumental heart of the centre. Pompeii lies just 26 km to the southeast, and the colourful cliffside town of Sorrento is roughly 50 km south along the coast — both are easy day trips when you have your own wheels. The coastal roads around the Bay of Napoli are well suited to campervans, though some stretches near the Amalfi side narrow considerably, so a compact campervan can be a smart choice. For larger groups, a motorhome gives you the space to explore at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Napoli area, which means flexible pick-up points and genuine insider tips before you even hit the road.
Napoli enjoys a Mediterranean climate that makes it a rewarding destination year-round. Spring is ideal for exploring, with the Maggio dei Monumenti festival in May opening doors to historic sites not usually accessible. September brings the Festa di Piedigrotta, a beloved local celebration with music and processions near the Mergellina waterfront. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel along the coast, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a good idea. Autumn and winter offer quieter roads and easy access to campsites around Napoli, plus lower hire rates through peer-to-peer owners.
Naples is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 26 km southeast from Napoli to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, frozen in time since 79 AD. Spend a full day walking the excavated streets, then continue to Oplontis in Torre Annunziata for a quieter archaeological site. Campervan parking is available right outside the main entrance at Pompeii, making access straightforward.
Drive 50 km south from Napoli along the Bay to reach Sorrento, perched on cliffs above the sea. Stop at Castellammare di Stabia for its thermal baths and the Antiquarium museum. In Sorrento, stroll through Piazza Tasso and sample local limoncello. Roads narrow closer to town, so a compact campervan is recommended.
The 85 km drive southeast from Napoli to Amalfi takes you along one of Europe's most scenic coastal roads. Visit the cathedral in Ravello and the Emerald Grotto near Coniglio. Stop in Positano for its terraced houses cascading to the beach. Motorhome drivers should note height restrictions on the SS163 — check clearances before setting off.
Travel 170 km southeast from Napoli to Matera, famous for its ancient Sassi cave dwellings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Break the journey in Potenza to visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Basilicata. In Matera, explore the Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario for a glimpse of traditional cave life. Campervan-friendly parking areas sit just outside the old town.
Cover 225 km northwest from Napoli to Rome along the A1 motorway. Break the trip at the Royal Palace of Caserta, one of Europe's largest royal residences, and stop in the hilltop abbey of Montecassino. In Rome, the Colosseum and Vatican Museums await. Several motorhome service areas line the A1, making the journey comfortable.
Head 475 km southeast from Napoli into the heart of Puglia. Visit the trulli houses in Alberobello, then continue to the white-washed old town of Ostuni. End your trip in Lecce, known as the Florence of the South for its baroque architecture. Campsites with full hook-ups are plentiful along the Adriatic coast between Bari and Lecce.

The area around Napoli offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Along the coast you will find seaside sites with direct beach access, while inland options near Vesuvius provide a quieter countryside setting. Most campsites in the Napoli region feature electrical hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Several also offer Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and on-site restaurants, making longer stays comfortable.
Parking a motorhome or campervan in Napoli requires some planning, as the historic centre has restricted traffic zones (ZTL) and narrow streets. Overnight parking in public areas is generally permitted unless signs state otherwise, but dedicated service areas are the most comfortable option. Several facilities around the city offer secure parking with services tailored to larger vehicles.
We had an excellent experience renting João’s van through Yescapa. Communication was fantastic from start to finish, and João was always quick to respond and help with anything we needed. Any questions or minor issues we had were sorted out straight away, which made the whole trip stress free. The van was the perfect size for two people travelling around Portugal. It was comfortable, easy to drive, and had everything we needed for our adventure. We would highly recommend João to anyone looking to explore Portugal by van and wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.
Everything was perfect with Ricardo. Communication was easy, and they have been very respectful and arrangeant. I truly recommand to rent your car to them.
Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.
We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.
We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
