Napoli's underground tunnels stretch over 80 km beneath the city, carved from volcanic tuff over 2,400 years of history. This southern Italian port city sits at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, offering a dramatic backdrop for any road trip along the Campanian coast. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli houses one of the world's finest collections of Greco-Roman artefacts, while the Cappella Sansevero draws visitors with its extraordinary Veiled Christ sculpture. Wander through Spaccanapoli, the narrow street that splits the old town in two, or take in panoramic views from Castel Sant'Elmo high above the city. The Royal Palace of Napoli on Piazza del Plebiscito anchors the monumental heart of the centre. Pompeii lies just 26 km to the southeast, and the colourful cliffside town of Sorrento is roughly 50 km south along the coast — both are easy day trips when you have your own wheels. The coastal roads around the Bay of Napoli are well suited to campervans, though some stretches near the Amalfi side narrow considerably, so a compact campervan can be a smart choice. For larger groups, a motorhome gives you the space to explore at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Napoli area, which means flexible pick-up points and genuine insider tips before you even hit the road.
Napoli enjoys a Mediterranean climate that makes it a rewarding destination year-round. Spring is ideal for exploring, with the Maggio dei Monumenti festival in May opening doors to historic sites not usually accessible. September brings the Festa di Piedigrotta, a beloved local celebration with music and processions near the Mergellina waterfront. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel along the coast, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a good idea. Autumn and winter offer quieter roads and easy access to campsites around Napoli, plus lower hire rates through peer-to-peer owners.
Naples is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Just 26 km southeast of Naples, the ancient ruins of Pompeii await. Stop in Ercolano along the way to visit Herculaneum, remarkably well preserved beneath volcanic ash. Designated parking areas sit near both site entrances. A campervan gives you the flexibility to explore both archaeological parks over a comfortable weekend trip.
From Naples, the Amalfi Coast lies around 85 km to the south. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello line the winding SS163 road. Stop in Cetara to taste colatura di alici, the local anchovy sauce. Roads are narrow, so a campervan is the ideal choice. Campsites in Minori and Maiori offer pitches with sea views, perfect for a multi-day stay along this legendary coastline.
The 50 km coastal drive from Naples to Sorrento follows the gulf with views of Vesuvius behind you. Stop at Castellammare di Stabia for its thermal baths and Vico Equense for local pizza. Sorrento offers campsites perched above the cliffs. A motorhome handles the route well, though narrower lanes on the peninsula suit a campervan better.
The roughly 230 km drive from Naples to Rome follows the A1 motorway through the Lazio countryside. Plan stops at the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Abbey of Montecassino along the way. In Rome, the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Vatican City await. Campsites such as Flaminio Village sit north of the city with good public transport links into the centre.
Around 190 km south of Naples, Paestum preserves three Doric temples dating to the 6th century BC. Drive through the Salerno plain and pause at Agropoli for a beach break. The Archaeological Museum of Paestum displays the famous Tomb of the Diver fresco. Spacious campsites nearby accommodate motorhomes of all sizes, making this a comfortable multi-day excursion from Naples.
Around 310 km southeast of Naples, Matera is famous for its Sassi, cave dwellings carved into rock and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way, detour through Potenza and the Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park. In Matera, visit the rock church of Santa Maria de Idris. Parking areas on the outskirts offer space for larger vehicles and views across the dramatic ravine.

The Naples area offers campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Along the coast near Pozzuoli and Bacoli, sites provide pitches with sea views, while inland options closer to Vesuvius offer quieter settings with volcano panoramas. Most campsites feature electric hook-ups, sanitary blocks with hot showers and Wi-Fi. Several also include swimming pools and direct beach access, making them comfortable bases for exploring the region.
Naples operates a ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) restricting larger vehicles in the historic centre. Use designated car parks on the outskirts and take public transport into the city. Overnight parking on public roads is not permitted, but dedicated motorhome areas allow it. Check height restrictions at multi-storey car parks and choose facilities suited to campervans and motorhomes.

Le séjour en van s’est super bien passé. Le van est bien équipé. Franck est agréable et très réactif. Nous recommandons ce van pour vos voyages !
Guillaume was super helpful. He left games in the car for our two young kids, and was very responsive in the lead up to booking. The van was great. A few things were broken awaiting fixes, but Guillaume walked us through these on pickup, and ensured there were solutions during our trip to reduce the impact. Thanks!
We visited Mallorca for four days, and it was the best decision to discover the island with this camper van. The van was really well equipped and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay at beautiful spots — including a portable chemical toilet, a water tank with a camping shower to wash off the sand after the beach, a camping stove, and plastic cutlery. Communication with Álvaro was great throughout our stay. He really went the extra mile to make sure we had a nice trip and even provided us with extra towels and goggles for the beach. The only thing to keep in mind is that it’s an older car. This gave the trip exactly the charm we were looking for, but the odometer and fuel gauge did have some issues from time to time. Thank you so much, Álvaro! Whenever we come back to Palma, we will definitely rent your van again. 😊
Diego is an amazing person, cares a lot about his custumers give a real attention to the details..the van were super clean and tooken care of..thanks a lot diego
