Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Ljubljana Airport

Ljubljana Airport — a region worth exploring

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport handles around 1.8 million passengers annually and serves as Slovenia's main gateway, sitting just 26 kilometres north of the capital near the town of Brnik. From here, the Julian Alps are barely an hour's drive away, making it an ideal starting point for a road trip through one of Europe's most compact yet diverse countries. Lake Bled, with its iconic island church, lies only 36 kilometres from the airport, while the Škocjan Caves — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are roughly 100 kilometres to the southwest. The Soča Valley, famous for its emerald-green river and outdoor activities, is reachable in under two hours heading west. Ljubljana itself is a walkable capital with a lively Central Market, the Dragon Bridge, and Ljubljana Castle perched above the old town. Heading south, the Karst region offers wine cellars, Lipica Stud Farm, and rolling countryside perfect for slow travel. Slovenia's road network is well maintained and distances are short — you can cross the entire country in about three hours — which makes a campervan the perfect way to explore at your own pace. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners near Ljubljana Airport, giving you a wide choice of vehicles and the flexibility to start your Slovenian adventure the moment you land. Whether you're heading for alpine lakes, coastal towns along the Adriatic, or the vineyard-covered hills of Štajerska, picking up from Ljubljana puts everything within easy reach.

Best time to visit

Slovenia's campervan season runs from April through October, with each month offering something different. June is ideal for the Soča Valley's rafting season, while September brings the grape harvest across the Vipava and Štajerska wine regions. Summer months — July and August — are the most popular for Lake Bled and the Adriatic coast, so booking your vehicle early through Yescapa is a smart move. Spring and autumn bring fewer fellow travellers and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing, making them excellent choices for a motorhome trip through the Julian Alps or the Karst plateau.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Ljubljana Airport

Slovenia uses a vignette system for its motorways. You can purchase an e-vignette online before arrival — weekly, monthly, or annual options are available. The speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 80 km/h. Campervans under 3.5 tonnes follow the standard 130 km/h limit. The A1 and A2 are the main motorways, connecting Ljubljana to Maribor and Koper respectively. Rest areas with fuel stations appear regularly along these routes. Mountain passes such as the Vršič Pass may have seasonal restrictions for larger vehicles, so check conditions before heading into the Julian Alps.

We had an outstanding experience renting from Antonio and his family. Antonio and his son Ricardo provided clear, thorough instructions on operating the camper, ensuring we felt confident from the start. Throughout the trip, Ricardo's communication and support were excellent—always responsive and helpful. At the end of the rental, their evaluation was fair, transparent, and reasonable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a smooth camper rental experience!

Absolutely perfect. The vehicle was exactly as described and equipped with everything necessary for a perfect stay. We had a great time and would love to book it again the next time we are in France 🇫🇷

Amazing trip! I travelled with a friend all around the Dolomites in Nicola's van. It was incredible, it couldn't have gone better. The van is fully equipped with everything you need. We did feel a little cold the first night so we got some blankets at a local shop to upgrade the ones available in the van. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pick-up/drop-off location is a bit inconvenient (relatively far away), but for the price and quality, it's definitely worth it. The hosts were super attentive to everything we needed. Thank you!
