Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Ljubljana Airport

Ljubljana Airport — a region worth exploring

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport handles around 1.8 million passengers annually and serves as Slovenia's main gateway, sitting just 26 kilometres north of the capital near the town of Brnik. From here, the Julian Alps are barely an hour's drive away, making it an ideal starting point for a road trip through one of Europe's most compact yet diverse countries. Lake Bled, with its iconic island church, lies only 36 kilometres from the airport, while the Škocjan Caves — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are roughly 100 kilometres to the southwest. The Soča Valley, famous for its emerald-green river and outdoor activities, is reachable in under two hours heading west. Ljubljana itself is a walkable capital with a lively Central Market, the Dragon Bridge, and Ljubljana Castle perched above the old town. Heading south, the Karst region offers wine cellars, Lipica Stud Farm, and rolling countryside perfect for slow travel. Slovenia's road network is well maintained and distances are short — you can cross the entire country in about three hours — which makes a campervan the perfect way to explore at your own pace. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners near Ljubljana Airport, giving you a wide choice of vehicles and the flexibility to start your Slovenian adventure the moment you land. Whether you're heading for alpine lakes, coastal towns along the Adriatic, or the vineyard-covered hills of Štajerska, picking up from Ljubljana puts everything within easy reach.

Best time to visit

Slovenia's campervan season runs from April through October, with each month offering something different. June is ideal for the Soča Valley's rafting season, while September brings the grape harvest across the Vipava and Štajerska wine regions. Summer months — July and August — are the most popular for Lake Bled and the Adriatic coast, so booking your vehicle early through Yescapa is a smart move. Spring and autumn bring fewer fellow travellers and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing, making them excellent choices for a motorhome trip through the Julian Alps or the Karst plateau.

The best road trips in Ljubljana Airport

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Bled and Bohinj Alpine Loop

120 km 3–5 days

Start near Ljubljana Airport and head to Lake Bled, just 36 km away. Circle the lake, visit Bled Castle, then continue to Lake Bohinj and the Savica Waterfall. This short loop of around 120 km is perfect for a campervan, with well-equipped campsites at both lakes and easy roads throughout.

The Karst and Coast Discovery

180 km 3–6 days

Head southwest from Ljubljana to explore the Karst region. Visit the Škocjan Caves, taste local Teran wine in the village of Dutovlje, then continue to the Adriatic coast at Piran. This 180 km route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with coastal campsites in Portorož offering full hook-ups and sea views.

The Emerald Soča Trail

280 km 5–8 days

Follow the Soča River from Bovec to Tolmin, passing through the Soča Gorge and stopping at the Napoleon Bridge near Kobarid. Continue to Nova Gorica and loop back through the Vipava Valley. At around 280 km, this route offers riverside campsites and is ideal for a campervan trip through Slovenia's western valleys.

The Thermal Springs Route

350 km 5–8 days

Drive east from Ljubljana through the Dolenjska region to reach the thermal spas of Dolenjske Toplice and Čatež. Continue to Ptuj — Slovenia's oldest town — and finish in Maribor. This 350 km route crosses gentle hills and vineyard country, with motorhome-friendly campsites near each spa town offering electric hook-ups and wellness facilities.

The Grand Slovenian Circle

550 km 8–11 days

This 550 km loop from Ljubljana takes in the best of Slovenia: Lake Bled, the Vršič Pass, the Soča Valley, the Adriatic coast at Piran, the Škocjan Caves, and back via the Karst. Allow 8 to 10 days to enjoy each stop fully. A motorhome gives you the comfort needed for this longer journey, with campsites spread evenly along the route.

The Wine and Mountains Expedition

620 km 10–15 days

Combine Slovenia's alpine north with its wine-producing east on this 620 km route. Start at Ljubljana Airport, head to Kranjska Gora and over the Vršič Pass, explore the Soča Valley, then cross south to the Goriška Brda wine hills. Loop east through Celje and the Štajerska vineyards before finishing in Maribor. Campsites with full facilities are available throughout.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Ljubljana Airport

Slovenia uses a vignette system for its motorways. You can purchase an e-vignette online before arrival — weekly, monthly, or annual options are available. The speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 80 km/h. Campervans under 3.5 tonnes follow the standard 130 km/h limit. The A1 and A2 are the main motorways, connecting Ljubljana to Maribor and Koper respectively. Rest areas with fuel stations appear regularly along these routes. Mountain passes such as the Vršič Pass may have seasonal restrictions for larger vehicles, so check conditions before heading into the Julian Alps.

We had a superb long weekend trip in Gonçalo’s converted van and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Gonçalo was a very friendly owner and always responded promptly to all our questions, which made everything easy and stress-free from the beginning. The van came with everything we needed and was very well prepared for our trip. It was comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for our family of four. Gonçalo was also incredibly helpful throughout, which we really appreciated. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend both Gonçalo and his van to anyone looking for a great family campervan experience.

Mathieu was easy to communicate with and flexible. The van is perfect- simple, well organized, and very comfortable for sleeping. Mathieu equips the kitchen with some basics, and 2 camping chairs- it is really nice.

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.
