Why choose Lisbon for your road trip

Lisbon — a city worth exploring

Lisboa's Vasco da Gama Bridge stretches 12.3 km across the Tagus estuary, making it the longest bridge in the European Union. The Portuguese capital sits on seven hills along the northern bank of the River Tagus, offering a landscape that blends historic neighbourhoods with wide riverside promenades. Explore the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Belém, then wander through the narrow lanes of Alfama to reach the Castelo de São Jorge for panoramic views over the city's terracotta rooftops. The Museu Nacional do Azulejo, housed in a former 16th-century convent, showcases five centuries of Portuguese tile art. For something more contemporary, the MAAT — Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology sits right on the waterfront. Sintra is just 30 km to the northwest, where the colourful Palácio da Pena awaits, while the surf town of Ericeira lies 50 km north along the Atlantic coast. Lisboa's riverside roads and well-connected motorways make it easy to navigate by campervan, and the surrounding region offers plenty of space to park up and explore at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome directly from a local owner — a peer-to-peer approach that means more choice, better value, and personal tips from someone who knows the area. Whether you are planning a city break or a longer coastal adventure, picking up a campervan in Lisboa puts you right where the journey begins.

Best time to visit

Lisboa enjoys a mild Atlantic climate that makes it a great destination year-round. The Festas de Lisboa in June fill the city with street parties, grilled sardines, and parades honouring Santo António — book your campervan early for this popular month. Summer brings warm, dry days ideal for combining city sightseeing with beach stops along the Cascais coast. Autumn and winter are quieter, with comfortable temperatures for exploring on foot and easier campsite availability in the surrounding region. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better rates outside peak season, so hiring a motorhome in Lisboa between October and April can be especially good value.

Top getaways from Lisbon

Lisbon is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Lisboa to Arrábida

80km south 2–4 days

Cross the Tagus and drive 80 km south from Lisboa to the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park. Stop in Setúbal for fresh grilled fish at the Mercado do Livramento, then continue to Praia de Galapinhos. The coastal road through the park offers incredible views, and motorhome-friendly parking areas are dotted along the route. Sesimbra is a great overnight base.

Lisboa to Nazaré

130km north 3–6 days

Drive 130 km north from Lisboa to Nazaré, famous for its giant waves at Praia do Norte. Along the way, stop at the medieval town of Óbidos, enclosed within its 14th-century walls, and visit the Mosteiro de Alcobaça. Campervan facilities are available near the Nazaré lighthouse, and the clifftop Sítio neighbourhood offers a perfect vantage point over the Atlantic.

Lisboa to Coimbra

190km north 3–6 days

Head 190 km north from Lisboa to Coimbra, home to one of Europe's oldest universities. Visit the Biblioteca Joanina and the Sé Velha cathedral, then stroll along the Mondego River. The A1 motorway makes the drive straightforward for larger vehicles. Parque de Campismo de Coimbra is a well-equipped stop just outside the city centre, ideal for a multi-day stay.

Lisboa to Sintra

30km northwest 1–3 days

Head 30 km northwest from Lisboa to Sintra, a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape. Spend a day exploring the Palácio da Pena and the Moorish Castle, then drive down to Praia da Ursa for a dramatic coastal walk. Campervan parking is available near the town centre, though the winding roads up to the palaces are narrow — arrive early for the best spots.

Lisboa to Porto

280km north 5–8 days

Travel 280 km north from Lisboa to Porto, following the Atlantic coast or the A1 motorway. Break the journey in Aveiro, known for its colourful moliceiro boats and canal-side architecture. In Porto, explore the Livraria Lello, the Ribeira district, and the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Several campervan-friendly aires are available along the Douro riverfront.

Lisboa to the Algarve

300km southeast 5–8 days

Drive 300 km southeast from Lisboa to the Algarve, Portugal's southern coastline. Stop in Évora to see the Roman Temple and the Capela dos Ossos, then continue to Lagos for its dramatic sea cliffs at Ponta da Piedade. The A2 motorway is well-suited for motorhomes, and the Algarve has a wide choice of campsites with full hook-ups, especially around Albufeira and Tavira.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in central Lisboa requires some planning, as many streets in historic neighbourhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto are narrow and restricted. Dedicated motorhome and campervan parking areas are available on the outskirts, often with good public transport links into the centre. Overnight parking in non-designated areas is generally not permitted within the city limits, so it is best to use official facilities.

  • Parque de Estacionamento do Parque das Nações, 8km northeast — Large open-air car park near the Oceanário de Lisboa with space for oversized vehicles. Well connected by metro to the city centre.
  • Parking Belém — Centro Cultural de Belém, 7km west — Underground car park near the Jerónimos Monastery with height-limited sections. Check clearance before entering; suitable for campervans under 2.1 m.
  • Área de Serviço para Autocaravanas — Monsanto, 6km northwest — Dedicated motorhome service area in Monsanto Forest Park with water, waste disposal, and electrical points. A peaceful spot close to the city.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
