Why choose Dunedin for your road trip

Dunedin — a city worth exploring

Dunedin's railway station, completed in 1906, features over 725,000 Royal Doulton porcelain tiles across its ornate Flemish Renaissance facade, making it one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings. The city sits at the head of Otago Harbour, a long natural inlet that stretches 20 km from the Pacific Ocean to the city centre. Explore the Toitū Otago Settlers Museum for a deep dive into the region's social history, or wander through the Dunedin Botanic Garden, the oldest in New Zealand, established in 1863. Baldwin Street, officially recognised as one of the world's steepest residential streets, draws curious visitors year-round. Just 30 km east along the Otago Peninsula, the Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head offers the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross on the planet. Queenstown lies roughly 280 km to the west, opening up an incredible stretch of Southern Alps scenery for those heading inland. The harbour-side geography and wide arterial roads make Dunedin easy to navigate in larger vehicles, while the surrounding coastline and rural hinterland reward those who take their time. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in Dunedin, giving you the flexibility of peer-to-peer rental and genuine local tips on where to go next.

Best time to visit

Dunedin enjoys a long, mild summer from December to March, ideal for exploring the Otago Peninsula and its wildlife colonies. The Dunedin Midwinter Carnival in June brings lantern parades and community performances to the city streets, while the Dunedin Craft Beer and Food Festival in March celebrates local producers. Book a campervan through Yescapa during the quieter shoulder months of October or April to enjoy competitive peer-to-peer pricing and fewer crowds at popular campsites. Summer remains the peak season for motorhome travel, so planning ahead is worthwhile.

It was a pleasure meeting Fernando and his girlfriend. They were friendly, respectful, considerate, and took excellent care of the motorhome. They returned it clean and exactly as expected, and everything went smoothly from start to finish. I would gladly rent to them again and highly recommend them to other owners.

It was unbelievable from the very beginning))) first of all - the owner! Pedro made this perfect 4x4 Jeep by himself, and he gave all the stuff he use by himself during our trip) we just don’t take the solar panels, because we prefer not to stay for a long time in one spots) So the kitchen, the shower, roof top living area and A coffee machine almost))) that was really incredible to have it with us and to use it during our trip! Moreother Pedro was available during the rental period and before our trip he send us some great spots to stay and very quit and awesome route in the heart of Portugal! So we are thinking about the next experience with him and his Jeep. Definitely will come back for another trip! Thanks 🤗

———— We had a great experience renting the camper van from Adrià. Communication was excellent from the beginning—he was always quick to respond and very flexible with timings and anything we needed. The van was exactly as shown in the photos, in great condition, and we had no issues throughout our trip. We would definitely recommend renting from him and would happily do it again.
