Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Arizona

Arizona — a region worth exploring

Arizona's Grand Canyon stretches 446 km along the Colorado River, carved over nearly two billion years of geological history, making it one of the most awe-inspiring natural formations on the planet. From the red rock spires of Monument Valley to the cool pine forests of Flagstaff, Arizona offers a remarkable range of landscapes for road trippers. The drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon South Rim covers roughly 360 km, while Tucson to Sedona is about 300 km through desert valleys and winding mountain roads. Along the way, you can explore Saguaro National Park, home to the iconic giant cacti that define the Sonoran Desert, or wander the ancient cliff dwellings at Montezuma Castle National Monument. Lake Powell, near the Utah border, provides a striking contrast of deep blue water against sandstone cliffs, and Petrified Forest National Park in the northeast showcases fossilised trees dating back 225 million years. Arizona's wide, well-maintained highways and abundance of open space make it ideal for campervan and motorhome travel, with plenty of room to park up and take in the scenery. Whether you fancy desert sunrises near Tucson or stargazing in Flagstaff — one of the world's first International Dark Sky Cities — there is always something to discover. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Arizona, giving you the flexibility to start your trip from Phoenix, Tucson, or smaller towns and explore at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Arizona is a year-round destination for campervan travel, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring (March to May) is especially popular, coinciding with wildflower blooms across the desert and events like the Scottsdale Arts Festival in March. Autumn brings comfortable temperatures and the Sedona International Film Festival in February. Winter is a fine time to explore southern Arizona's lower deserts, while summer is perfect for the cooler elevations around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon's North Rim. Book early for spring and autumn trips, as these are peak seasons. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive rates even during busier months by hiring directly from local owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Arizona

Arizona's interstate highways are toll-free, so you can travel freely without worrying about toll booths or passes. The main routes — Interstate 10 connecting Phoenix and Tucson, and Interstate 17 running north to Flagstaff — are well suited to motorhomes and campervans of all sizes. Speed limits on interstates are typically 120 km/h for cars, but vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are limited to 105 km/h. Rest areas with parking for larger vehicles are spaced regularly along major routes. Be aware that some scenic roads, such as the switchbacks on Route 89A through Oak Creek Canyon, may be narrow, so check your vehicle dimensions before setting off.

We had the best trip with the van "Fiona" we rented by Cuca - the most amazing host. There was no problems with the van, and it was driving great for an old car. The van also had everything we needed like a portabel shower, a sink with running water, a cooler and a much needed parasol. Cuca recommended the best beaches and places, and responded quickly to any questions we had. We cant recommend Cuca and the van enough!
