Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Alsace

Alsace — a region worth exploring

Alsace sits along the Rhine plain between the Vosges mountains and the German border, packing over 170 kilometres of vineyard-lined roads into one of France's most compact and flavourful regions. From Strasbourg in the north to Mulhouse in the south — a drive of just 120 kilometres — you can explore half-timbered villages like Riquewihr, Eguisheim and Kaysersberg, each with its own character and local wines. The Route des Vins d'Alsace, stretching 170 kilometres from Marlenheim to Thann, is one of the oldest wine routes in France and a dream to follow at your own pace. Beyond the vineyards, the Vosges mountains offer forested passes and panoramic viewpoints such as the Grand Ballon, the range's highest peak at 1,424 metres. Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, perched above the plain near Sélestat, draws visitors year-round with its restored medieval architecture and sweeping views across to the Black Forest. The region's network of smaller roads is well suited to campervans and motorhomes, with gentle gradients on most routes and plenty of places to stop along the way. Whether you fancy a slow tour through Colmar's canals or a mountain loop through the Vosges, hiring a vehicle through Yescapa connects you with local owners across Alsace who know the area and offer a range of campervans and motorhomes to match your plans.

Best time to visit

Alsace is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm days ideal for driving the wine route, while September and October reward visitors with the grape harvest season and colourful foliage across the Vosges. The famous Strasbourg Christmas Market, running from late November to late December, is one of the oldest in Europe and well worth a winter campervan trip. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your motorhome hire on Yescapa ahead of time helps you secure the best choice and peer-to-peer pricing from local owners across Alsace. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and mild temperatures that make exploring by campervan especially enjoyable.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Alsace

France's autoroutes in Alsace, including the A35 and A36, are largely toll-free in this region, which is unusual compared to much of the country. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes must observe a speed limit of 110 km/h on autoroutes and 80 km/h on national roads. The A35 runs north–south through the Rhine plain, connecting Strasbourg to Mulhouse, while the A36 links Mulhouse westward towards Belfort. Rest areas with motorhome-friendly parking are well spaced along these routes. Mountain roads through the Vosges, such as the Route des Crêtes, are generally well maintained but feature tighter bends — take your time and enjoy the views.
