The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Sardinia's Costa Smeralda stretches across 20 kilometres of coastline in the northeast, originally developed in the 1960s by the Aga Khan and now one of the Mediterranean's most recognisable seaside destinations. Beyond this famous strip, the island offers an extraordinary range of landscapes for road-based exploration. The Nuraghe Su Nuraxi in Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to 1500 BC, sits roughly 60 kilometres north of Cagliari, while the Neptune's Grotto sea caves near Alghero reward visitors with dramatic limestone formations accessible by boat or a 654-step staircase carved into the cliff. Heading inland, the Supramonte mountain range and the Gorropu Gorge — one of Europe's deepest canyons — provide a wilder side to Sardinia that many travellers never expect. From Cagliari in the south to Olbia in the north, the distance is approximately 270 kilometres, making the island perfectly suited to a week-long touring holiday. Coastal roads wind past sandy coves, while interior routes climb through cork oak forests and pastoral villages. Sardinia's road network connects even remote areas, so a campervan gives you the flexibility to follow your own rhythm. For those who prefer more space, a motorhome is ideal for families wanting comfort on longer stretches. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Sardinia, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles and picking up close to ports or airports — a practical, peer-to-peer way to start your island adventure.
Sardinia's touring season runs from April through October, with May and June offering warm days, wildflower-covered hillsides, and quieter roads. The Cavalcata Sarda festival in Sassari, held each May, showcases traditional costumes and horsemanship from across the island — a memorable stop on any road trip. September brings the grape harvest season, and many inland towns host wine festivals worth planning around. Summer remains the most popular period, so booking your campervan on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice of vehicles and competitive peer-to-peer rates. Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring Sardinia's interior without the busier coastal traffic, and campsites across the island typically stay open well into October.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 45-kilometre coastal stretch in Sardinia is one of the island's most memorable drives. Start in Alghero, visit Neptune's Grotto, then follow the cliffs south towards Bosa with its colourful riverside old town. Stop at Spiaggia di Porto Alabe along the way. A campervan is ideal for reaching smaller coves just off the main road.
Start in Cagliari and explore Sardinia's southern coastline over roughly 180 kilometres. Visit Poetto beach in the city, drive to the archaeological site of Nora near Pula, and reach the dunes at Chia. Return via the former mining village of Montevecchio. Campsites with motorhome pitches are well distributed along the entire route.
Drive roughly 350 kilometres along Sardinia's eastern coast from Olbia to Arbatax. Highlights include La Cinta beach near San Teodoro, the Grotta del Bue Marino caves at Cala Gonone, and the Pedra Longa rock pinnacle near Baunei. The SS125 Orientale Sarda winds through mountain scenery — well suited to a campervan. Campsites are available at Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese.
Explore Sardinia's northwest over roughly 400 kilometres. Start in Sassari, visit the Romanesque Basilica of Saccargia near Codrongianos, and drive to Spiaggia della Pelosa at Stintino. Continue to the Asinara National Park, reachable by ferry, and the former silver-mining village of Argentiera. The return passes through Castelsardo with its clifftop old town. Motorhome pitches are available in Stintino and Castelsardo.
Circle Sardinia over roughly 550 kilometres and experience the island's full diversity. From Cagliari, head to Villasimius on the southeast coast, continue to Arbatax, then north to Olbia and the Costa Smeralda, before crossing to Sassari and Alghero and returning south. Along the way you'll cross mountain passes in the Gennargentu and wide plains in the Campidano. A campervan offers the agility needed for narrow coastal stretches.
Take 10 to 14 days and discover Sardinia in depth over roughly 600 kilometres. Combine coast and interior: from the Costa Smeralda through the Supramonte mountains near Orgosolo to the mining heritage of Iglesias in the southwest. Visit Nuraghe Losa near Abbasanta and the thermal springs at Fordongianus. This route weaves together beaches, archaeology, and mountain villages — ideal for an extended motorhome holiday.

Sardinia offers campsites to suit every preference — from pitches right by the sea to peaceful spots in the mountainous interior. Many sites provide electrical hook-ups, sanitary facilities, and waste disposal stations for motorhomes. Some coastal campsites have direct beach access, while inland sites often feature shaded pitches beneath cork oaks. Whether you travel by campervan or a larger vehicle, Sardinia has the right infrastructure for your trip.
Sardinia has no motorway toll roads, making it one of the most budget-friendly Italian regions for touring. The main artery is the SS131 Carlo Felice, running roughly 230 kilometres from Cagliari to Sassari as a dual carriageway. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on main roads and 100 km/h on dual carriageways — lower than standard car limits. Coastal and mountain roads, particularly along the eastern side near Baunei and Dorgali, can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are found along the SS131 and SS131d routes.
