Lyon sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, making it the only major French city where two waterways meet in the heart of the urban centre. The old town, known as Vieux Lyon, is one of Europe's largest Renaissance districts and a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching across 500 hectares. Wander through the famous traboules — covered passageways that cut through buildings — at the Traboules du Vieux Lyon, then head to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière perched on Fourvière hill for sweeping views over the rooftops. Art lovers will enjoy the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, housed in a 17th-century abbey on Place des Terreaux, while the Musée des Confluences at the southern tip of the Presqu'île offers a striking modern architecture experience. For a day trip, the medieval village of Pérouges lies just 36 km to the north-east, and the vineyards of Beaujolais begin roughly 30 km to the north. Lyon's position along major motorway routes and its flat riverside roads make it easy to navigate by motorhome, with plenty of space to park along the Rhône's eastern bank. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners in and around Lyon, giving you the flexibility to pick up your vehicle close to where you need it and set off at your own pace. With a strong community of owners across the region, finding the right campervan for your trip is straightforward.
Lyon welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. The Fête des Lumières in early December transforms the city into an open-air light show across landmarks like Place des Terreaux and the Basilique de Fourvière — a truly unique experience from a campervan parked nearby. Spring and early summer bring the Nuits de Fourvière festival from June to July, with open-air performances in the ancient Roman theatres. Summer is the most popular season for motorhome travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead ensures the best choice from local owners. Autumn is ideal for exploring the Beaujolais vineyards north of Lyon during harvest time, with quieter roads and campsites.
Lyon is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Drive 75 km south-east from Lyon to the Gallo-Roman city of Vienne, home to the Temple d'Auguste et de Livie and the ancient theatre. Continue into the Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat for forest walks and panoramic viewpoints like the Crêt de la Perdrix at 1 432 m. Several motorhome aires are available along the route for overnight stops.
Travel 150 km east from Lyon to Annecy, where the crystal-clear lake and the Palais de l'Île are well worth the drive. Stop at Aix-les-Bains on Lac du Bourget along the way for a lakeside walk. Roads through the Savoie foothills are well-maintained and campervan-friendly. Plan three to five days to explore both lakes and the surrounding trails.
Head 60 km north from Lyon into the rolling Beaujolais wine country. Follow the Route des Vins through villages like Fleurie and Morgon, stopping to taste local crus. The town of Villefranche-sur-Saône makes a great base with campervan-friendly parking near the centre. Allow a leisurely two days to enjoy the scenery and cellar visits.
Head 160 km south from Lyon to the Gorges de l'Ardèche, where the Pont d'Arc — a 60-metre natural stone arch — spans the river. Stop in the village of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc for kayaking and visit the Caverne du Pont-d'Arc, a replica of the prehistoric Chauvet cave. Motorhome parking is available at designated areas near the gorge entrance.
Drive 310 km south from Lyon through the Rhône valley to the Camargue, famous for its wild horses and pink flamingos. Visit the walled city of Aigues-Mortes and the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue. Continue to Arles to see the Roman amphitheatre. Campervan stops are plentiful along the route, with well-equipped aires near Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Set off 470 km south-east from Lyon towards the Côte d'Azur. Break the journey in Montélimar for nougat tasting, then continue through Aix-en-Provence before reaching the coast at Nice. Explore the Promenade des Anglais and the hilltop village of Èze. Campervan parking near the coast requires planning — book pitches in advance during summer months for the best spots.

The Lyon area offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes, from riverside spots along the Saône to greener settings in the surrounding hills. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern sanitary blocks with showers and toilets, and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Whether you prefer staying close to the city centre or in the quieter countryside just outside Lyon, you will find well-maintained facilities within easy reach.
Lyon has several parking options suitable for motorhomes and campervans, though the city centre is best accessed on foot or by public transport once parked. Overnight parking in a motorhome is generally permitted in standard car parks unless local signage states otherwise, but staying in designated aires or campsites is recommended for comfort and services. The city's Park and Ride (P+R) facilities near metro stations offer a practical solution — park on the outskirts and take the metro into the centre.
We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.
We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
Excellent experience. Owner contacted us in advance to arrange a time and pick up location. Owner went into detail at pick up of onboard services and how to use correctly.
André e Raquel são ótimos anfitriões. Eles responderam rapidamente todas as nossas dúvidas e foram muito corretos em tudo que combinamos. Voltaremos a manter contato com eles em uma proxima oportunidade.
We are more than happy about this experience and couldn't be happier with the service. The campervan was spotless and well-prepared when we picked it up. They always responded quickly to our messages and were incredibly friendly and easy to deal with. They provided bed linen, towels, and coffee, which made the trip even more convenient. They also kindly drove us to the airport for our early morning flight, which we really appreciated. Their attention to detail and customer service made all the difference. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a campervan rental in Spain.
Eric was fantastic and an incredible host! Everything was great and he was so helpful, and the car is so smooth to drive and stay in!
