Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Western Australia

Western Australia — a region worth exploring

Western Australia covers roughly a third of the entire Australian continent, stretching across 2.6 million square kilometres — making it larger than Western Europe combined. From the towering karri forests of the south to the rust-red gorges of Karijini National Park, the landscape shifts dramatically as you travel. The Pinnacles Desert near Cervantes features thousands of limestone pillars rising from golden sand, while the turquoise waters of Ningaloo Reef offer one of the world's few places where you can snorkel directly from shore with whale sharks. Perth to Broome is approximately 2,240 km along the coast, and Margaret River sits just 270 km south of Perth, making it an easy first stop on a longer adventure. The road network is well-maintained but distances between towns can be vast, which makes a campervan or motorhome the ideal way to travel — you carry your accommodation with you and stop wherever the mood takes you. Coastal routes hug dramatic cliffs and white-sand beaches, while inland tracks lead to ancient Aboriginal rock art sites and wildflower country that erupts in colour each spring. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Western Australia, giving you access to a wide range of vehicles suited to everything from weekend getaways near Perth to extended outback expeditions. The peer-to-peer model means competitive pricing and personal tips from people who know the region best.

Best time to visit

Western Australia's wildflower season from August to October draws visitors from around the world, with over 12,000 species blooming across the state — the Everlasting Festival in the Coalseam Conservation Park each September is a highlight. April to October is ideal for exploring the north, including Broome and the Kimberley, when days are warm and dry. The south, from Perth to Esperance, is perfect for campervan travel from November to April. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of April or October often means better availability and more competitive rates from local owners, so you can enjoy Western Australia with fewer crowds on the road.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Western Australia

Western Australia's highways are generally toll-free, so you can travel the entire state without paying road charges. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans typically match standard vehicle limits — 110 km/h on most highways and 50 km/h in built-up areas unless otherwise signed. Vehicles over 4.5 tonnes may face lower limits on certain stretches. The main routes, such as the Indian Ocean Drive and Great Eastern Highway, are sealed and well-signposted, but fuel stops can be 200 km or more apart in remote areas, so plan accordingly. Rest areas with basic facilities are spaced regularly along major highways.

We had such a wonderful experience renting Ivan’s camper van for a week! Honestly, everything was even better than we expected. We had absolutely everything we needed — and then some. ❤️ The van was super clean, very well equipped, comfortable, and really performant. One of the things we loved most was the solar setup. We never needed to plug the van into electricity during our trip because the solar panels and battery system worked amazingly well — somehow, the battery just never seemed to run out! It made everything so easy and gave us a lot of freedom during our trip. All the practical things were also incredibly straightforward. Filling up with fresh water, emptying the grey water, and taking care of all the little camper-van things were really easy once Ivan explained everything to us. He made sure we had everything we needed before setting off, and it was clear that he genuinely cared about us having a good experience. And Ivan himself was was incredibly friendly, kind, helpful, and easy to communicate with. He checked in on us after a few days just to make sure everything was going well — not in an intrusive way at all, but in that really nice way where you can tell someone genuinely cares and wants to know that you’re having a good time. 🥰 We had quite a few questions along the way because there’s naturally a lot of information to remember when you first get a camper van, and every time we messaged him, he replied super quickly and was incredibly helpful. He also gave us great recommendations about places to visit and where to go, which made the whole trip even better. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The van was amazing, everything was easy and well thought-out, and Ivan was such a lovely host. If you’re planning a camper van trip along the north coast of Spain, we would absolutely recommend renting from Ivan. You’ll be in very good hands! We would 100% do it again. 🚐☀️❤️

Our hire experience was very smooth, the vehicle was exactly as described and the little extras provided by Jackeline & Juan made us feel welcomed & made the first day or so easier as we got used to van life. J&J were available to answer any questions we had during our trip and though we didn’t speak each other’s native languages we managed perfectly to communicate with AI & the instructive videos provided. Collection & return were easy. All in all a fabulous experience, one we would repeat and highly recommend. 5 Stars all round!
