Why choose Venice for your road trip

Venice — a city worth exploring

Venice stretches across 118 small islands connected by over 400 bridges, making it the only major city in the world built entirely on water. The Basilica di San Marco, with its five Byzantine domes, has stood at the heart of Piazza San Marco since the 11th century. Wander through the Gallerie dell'Accademia to admire works by Titian and Tintoretto, or visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection along the Grand Canal for modern masterpieces. The island of Murano, just 1.5 km north, is famous for its centuries-old glassblowing tradition, while Padua sits 38 km west with its remarkable Scrovegni Chapel. Heading south, Chioggia is 50 km away and offers a quieter lagoon atmosphere with colourful fishing boats. The flat terrain surrounding the Venetian lagoon makes driving a campervan straightforward, though the city centre itself is car-free — you will park on the mainland or at dedicated areas near the causeway. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome directly from local owners across the Veneto region, giving you the flexibility to explore Venice and its surroundings at your own pace. A campervan lets you wake up by the lagoon one morning and be among Prosecco hills the next, all without the hassle of fixed hotel bookings.

Best time to visit

Venice welcomes visitors year-round, each season offering its own character. The Carnevale di Venezia in February fills the city with elaborate masks and parades, while the Biennale di Venezia runs from April to November, drawing art lovers worldwide. Spring and early autumn are ideal for campervan travel, with comfortable temperatures and good campsite availability around the lagoon. Summer is the most popular season, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa early ensures the best choice from local owners. Winter brings the magical Acqua Alta season and fewer crowds, perfect for a quieter Venice experience. Whenever you visit, the flat roads of the Veneto region make driving easy and enjoyable.

Top getaways from Venice

Venice is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Venice to Chioggia

50km south 1–4 days

Drive 50 km south from Venice to Chioggia, often called Little Venice for its canals and bridges. Explore the lively fish market on Corso del Popolo and relax on Sottomarina beach. Campervan parking is available near the seafront, and the flat lagoon roads make this a relaxed short trip.

Venice to Lake Garda

120km northwest 3–6 days

Travel 120 km northwest from Venice to Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. Stop at Sirmione to see the Grotte di Catullo Roman ruins and explore Bardolino's wine cellars along the eastern shore. Several well-equipped campsites line the lakefront, ideal for a motorhome stay with full hook-ups and lake views.

Venice to the Dolomites

160km north 3–6 days

Head 160 km north from Venice into the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range. Drive through Cortina d'Ampezzo and hike around Lago di Braies for breathtaking alpine scenery. Mountain roads are well-maintained but winding, so a campervan is more manoeuvrable than larger vehicles. Campsites in Cortina offer full services.

Venice to Padua

38km west 1–3 days

Head 38 km west from Venice to Padua, a university city brimming with history. Visit the Scrovegni Chapel with Giotto's famous frescoes and stroll through Prato della Valle, one of Europe's largest squares. The drive is flat and easy in a campervan, with dedicated parking areas near the old town.

Venice to Ravenna and the Adriatic Coast

250km southeast 5–8 days

Follow the Adriatic 250 km southeast from Venice to Ravenna, home to extraordinary Byzantine mosaics at the Basilica di San Vitale. Stop at Comacchio's canal-laced old town and the Po Delta nature reserve for birdwatching. Coastal campsites between Jesolo and Ravenna offer spacious pitches with beach access, perfect for a week-long campervan adventure.

Venice to Verona and Mantua

270km west 5–8 days

Drive 270 km west from Venice through Verona and on to Mantua for a journey through Renaissance Italy. In Verona, visit the Arena di Verona and Juliet's House, then continue to Mantua's Palazzo Ducale and its frescoed halls. Motorhome parking is well signposted in both cities, and the A4 motorway makes the drive smooth and direct.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
