Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Utah

Utah — a region worth exploring

Utah is home to five national parks — known collectively as the Mighty Five — spanning from the red rock arches of Moab in the east to the towering hoodoos of Bryce Canyon in the south-west. The state covers over 219,000 square kilometres of high desert, canyon country, and alpine forest, making it one of the most geographically diverse destinations in the United States. From Salt Lake City to Moab, the drive stretches roughly 370 km along Interstate 70, while the journey from Zion National Park to Arches National Park covers around 500 km through some of the most dramatic scenery in North America. Along the way, you can explore Dead Horse Point State Park, the sandstone corridors of Capitol Reef, and the vast wilderness of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Utah's roads are well-maintained and purpose-built for long-distance travel, with wide lanes and well-signed rest stops that make life easy for larger vehicles. Whether you are winding through the switchbacks of Zion Canyon or cruising the open desert highways near Monument Valley, a campervan gives you the flexibility to stop wherever the landscape calls. A motorhome offers extra comfort for families tackling longer routes across the state. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Utah, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size, budget, and travel style — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and straightforward.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring Utah by campervan, with April to May and September to October offering comfortable daytime temperatures across the canyon country. The Moab area hosts the annual Jeep Safari in April, drawing adventure enthusiasts from around the world, while the Utah State Fair takes place each September in Salt Lake City. Summer is the most popular season for national park visits, so booking your Yescapa vehicle early is a smart move. Winter opens up skiing opportunities near Park City and Alta, and campsite availability across the southern parks remains steady. Hiring outside peak months through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive pricing and a wider choice of vehicles from local owners.

The best road trips in Utah

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Arches and Canyonlands Loop

200 km 3–6 days

This 200 km loop from Moab takes in the iconic Delicate Arch and the vast mesa-top views of Island in the Sky at Canyonlands. Perfect for a campervan, with several campgrounds near Moab and scenic pullouts along the route. Allow 3 to 6 days to explore both Utah parks at a relaxed pace.

The Zion–Bryce Loop

250 km 3–6 days

Covering 250 km through south-west Utah, this route links the towering walls of Zion Canyon with the orange hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. Stop at Red Canyon along Highway 12 for a memorable drive through crimson rock tunnels. A motorhome-friendly loop with well-equipped campgrounds at both parks, ideal for 3 to 6 days.

The Capitol Reef Crossing

400 km 5–8 days

Stretch across 400 km of Utah's heartland, following the Waterpocket Fold through Capitol Reef National Park and continuing along Scenic Byway 12 past Escalante Petrified Forest State Park. Allow 5 to 8 days to enjoy the orchards at Fruita and the slot canyons near Escalante. Suits both campervans and motorhomes.

The Monument Valley Route

480 km 5–8 days

This 480 km route heads south from Moab through Utah's red desert to the towering buttes of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, with a stop at Goosenecks State Park along the way. Plan 5 to 8 days and carry extra water for the more remote stretches. A campervan handles the narrower reservation roads with ease.

The Mighty Five Grand Tour

600 km 7–11 days

Connect all five of Utah's national parks on this 600 km route, from Zion and Bryce Canyon through Capitol Reef to Arches and Canyonlands. Highway 12 between Escalante and Torrey is one of the most scenic drives in the state. Allow 7 to 11 days in a motorhome for a comfortable journey with time to hike.

The Grand Utah Circuit

900 km 10–15 days

This 900 km circuit loops from Salt Lake City south through all five national parks and returns via I-70 through the San Rafael Swell. Over 10 to 15 days, you can explore Goblin Valley State Park and the alpine scenery of the Wasatch Range. A full-size motorhome is ideal for this extended Utah adventure.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Utah

Utah's interstate highways are toll-free, so you can travel across the state without worrying about extra charges. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans generally follow standard vehicle rules — 105 km/h on rural interstates and 95 km/h on urban stretches — though vehicles over 26,000 pounds may face lower limits on certain roads. The state's highway network includes well-maintained rest areas with facilities along major routes like I-15 and I-70. Mountain passes such as those near the Wasatch Range can see winter closures or chain requirements, so checking conditions before heading into higher elevations is worthwhile.

100% recommend. Such a kind and welcoming family. Everything was explained in detail when we arrived so we understood how everything worked onboard. The RV itself is stunning and has everything you need included. We were 2 adults and 2 kids (8 and 4) that spent 2 weeks traveling through northern Spain. Plenty of sleeping space, kitchen was large enough to prepare meals indoors if need be. The engine was powerful enough through the mountains and the size of the RV we had no problems navigating the narrow mountain roads and town. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

We had the best trip with the van "Fiona" we rented by Cuca - the most amazing host. There was no problems with the van, and it was driving great for an old car. The van also had everything we needed like a portabel shower, a sink with running water, a cooler and a much needed parasol. Cuca recommended the best beaches and places, and responded quickly to any questions we had. We cant recommend Cuca and the van enough!
