Why choose Uppsala for your road trip

Uppsala — a city worth exploring

Uppsala's cathedral, Domkyrkan, stands as Scandinavia's tallest church at 118.7 metres and has watched over the city since the late 13th century. This university town, home to Uppsala University founded in 1477, blends centuries of academic heritage with green riverside paths along the Fyris River. Wander through the Linnaeus Garden, the oldest botanical garden in Sweden, or step inside the Gustavianum museum to see the remarkable anatomical theatre built in 1663. Gamla Uppsala, just 5 km north, preserves royal burial mounds dating back to the 6th century — a must-see for anyone curious about Viking-era history. Stockholm lies only 71 km to the south, while the lakeside town of Sigtuna is a pleasant 37 km drive southwest. The surrounding Uppland countryside is largely flat, making it easy to navigate with larger vehicles, and quiet country roads lead to forests, lakes, and farmland perfect for slow-paced exploration. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners in the Uppsala area, giving you a personal touch and flexible pick-up options that make planning your trip straightforward. A campervan lets you combine city culture with the freedom of the Swedish countryside, all at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Uppsala is a rewarding destination throughout the year. The Walpurgis Night celebrations on 30 April fill the city with bonfires, choral singing, and student traditions — a truly unique experience. Summer brings the long daylight hours of the Swedish season, ideal for exploring by campervan, with campsites in the Uppland region open and welcoming. The Kulturnatten festival in September transforms Uppsala into an open stage of music, art, and performances. Booking through Yescapa during spring or autumn often means more choice and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Plan ahead for summer months to secure your preferred motorhome from a local owner.

Exceptional experience, I highly recommend it! Nuno is responsive, attentive and genuinely caring: he picked us up at the airport and provided us with a comprehensive list of must-see spots to explore the island, eat and sleep. Car is “hursh but fair”. Need a few km to grab a feeling but than you cruise. We went 900 km in n all kind of conditions and it was all good. All is in working order as described and not too long so you fit in a parking spot.
