Why choose Thessaloniki for your road trip

Thessaloniki — a city worth exploring

Thessaloniki's White Tower, built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, stands 34 metres tall on the waterfront and has become the city's most recognised landmark. Greece's second-largest city sits at the head of the Thermaic Gulf, offering a walkable centre packed with history and flavour. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki houses gold artefacts from ancient Macedonian tombs, while the Rotunda of Galerius — a 4th-century Roman monument — still bears traces of its original mosaics. Stroll through Modiano Market for local olives, spices and freshly baked bougatsa, then head uphill to the Byzantine walls of Ano Poli for panoramic views over the gulf. Halkidiki's first beaches lie just 60 km to the southeast, and Mount Olympus is roughly 80 km to the southwest, making Thessaloniki a superb base for longer explorations. The coastal roads heading east are wide and well-maintained, ideal for larger vehicles, while the city's position on the Via Egnatia motorway connects you quickly to both western and eastern Macedonia. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner in Thessaloniki, which means personalised tips on where to park, which routes to take and what to see along the way. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to start your Greek road trip from a city that rewards the curious.

Best time to visit

Thessaloniki is enjoyable year-round, but late spring and early autumn stand out for comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsites. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival runs each November, filling the waterfront with screenings and events, while the Dimitria Festival in October brings theatre, music and dance across the city. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel towards Halkidiki's coast, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a smart move. Winter months offer a relaxed pace, with fewer visitors and easy access to the thermal baths at Loutra Pozar, about 120 km west. Whenever you hire, Thessaloniki's mild coastal climate keeps road conditions pleasant.

Top getaways from Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Thessaloniki to Kassandra Peninsula

90km southeast 1–4 days

Head 90 km southeast from Thessaloniki to Kassandra, Halkidiki's first finger. Stop at Nea Potidea to see the canal cutting through the isthmus, then continue to Kallithea for its beach bars and clear water. Campervan-friendly parking areas dot the western coast. Allow time for a seafood lunch in Afytos, a clifftop village with stone-paved lanes.

Thessaloniki to Mount Olympus

80km southwest 2–4 days

Drive 80 km southwest from Thessaloniki to Litochoro, the gateway to Mount Olympus. Park near the village and hike the Enipeas Gorge trail to the Prionia trailhead, surrounded by beech and plane trees. The municipal campsite in Litochoro welcomes motorhomes and offers full hook-ups. Nearby, the ancient city of Dion features open-air ruins and a well-curated museum.

Thessaloniki to Kavala

130km east 3–6 days

Follow the Egnatia Odos 130 km east from Thessaloniki to Kavala, a harbour city built around a Byzantine fortress. Cross the ancient aqueduct of Kamares on foot, then visit the Tobacco Museum housed in a 19th-century warehouse. Take the ferry from Kavala to Thassos island for pine-fringed beaches. Campervan spaces are available at the port area and along the eastern waterfront.

Thessaloniki to Meteora

190km west 3–6 days

Travel 190 km west from Thessaloniki to Kalambaka, the town beneath the towering rock pillars of Meteora. Six active monasteries perch on sandstone columns — Great Meteoron and Varlaam are the most visited. Roads up to the monasteries are paved and suitable for campervans, though turning space is limited at some viewpoints. Rizarios Campsite near Kalambaka offers shaded pitches with mountain views.

Thessaloniki to Lake Ohrid via Prespa

300km northwest 5–8 days

Head 300 km northwest from Thessaloniki through Florina and the Prespa Lakes before crossing into North Macedonia towards Lake Ohrid. Stop at Agios Germanos village for its 11th-century frescoed churches, then explore Great Prespa Lake by the shore. The route follows well-maintained national roads with motorhome service points in Florina. Lake Ohrid's old town of Ohrid offers lakeside parking and UNESCO-listed churches.

Thessaloniki to Samothrace and the Thracian Coast

350km southeast 5–8 days

Drive 350 km southeast from Thessaloniki along the Thracian coast to Alexandroupoli, then catch the ferry to Samothrace island. Visit the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, where the Winged Victory of Samothrace was discovered. Back on the mainland, explore the Dadia Forest Reserve for rare raptor sightings. Motorhome parking is available at Alexandroupoli's port. The coastal E90 road is flat and easy to drive.

Facilities typically include electrical hook-ups, hot showers, Wi-Fi and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Several sites also offer direct beach access and shaded plots under pine or olive trees, making them comfortable bases for exploring Thessaloniki and the surrounding region.

Where to park your motorhome

Thessaloniki has several options for parking larger vehicles, though the city centre can be tight during peak hours. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally tolerated outside restricted zones, but always check local signage. Dedicated areas near the waterfront and on the city's outskirts offer more space and easier access. We recommend arriving early if you plan to park near the centre, and using peripheral lots connected by public transport for a stress-free visit.

  • Parking Lot at Thessaloniki Port (Pier 1), 1km south — Large open-air lot near the port entrance with space for oversized vehicles. Close to the White Tower and waterfront promenade.
  • OASTH Bus Depot Parking (Nea Elvetia), 5km east — Peripheral parking area near the Nea Elvetia bus depot, connected to the centre by frequent bus services. Suitable for motorhomes.
  • Parking at IKEA Thessaloniki (Pylaia), 8km southeast — Free, spacious car park on the city's southeastern edge. Easy access from the ring road and suitable for overnight stops in a campervan.
  • Parking at Mediterranean Cosmos Mall, 10km southeast — Large shopping centre car park off the main Thessaloniki–Airport road. Open 24 hours with flat, well-lit surfaces suitable for larger vehicles.

Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.

We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.

We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
