Thessaloniki's White Tower, built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, stands 34 metres tall on the waterfront and has become the city's most recognised landmark. Greece's second-largest city sits at the head of the Thermaic Gulf, offering a walkable centre packed with history and flavour. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki houses gold artefacts from ancient Macedonian tombs, while the Rotunda of Galerius — a 4th-century Roman monument — still bears traces of its original mosaics. Stroll through Modiano Market for local olives, spices and freshly baked bougatsa, then head uphill to the Byzantine walls of Ano Poli for panoramic views over the gulf. Halkidiki's first beaches lie just 60 km to the southeast, and Mount Olympus is roughly 80 km to the southwest, making Thessaloniki a superb base for longer explorations. The coastal roads heading east are wide and well-maintained, ideal for larger vehicles, while the city's position on the Via Egnatia motorway connects you quickly to both western and eastern Macedonia. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner in Thessaloniki, which means personalised tips on where to park, which routes to take and what to see along the way. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to start your Greek road trip from a city that rewards the curious.
Thessaloniki is enjoyable year-round, but late spring and early autumn stand out for comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsites. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival runs each November, filling the waterfront with screenings and events, while the Dimitria Festival in October brings theatre, music and dance across the city. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel towards Halkidiki's coast, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a smart move. Winter months offer a relaxed pace, with fewer visitors and easy access to the thermal baths at Loutra Pozar, about 120 km west. Whenever you hire, Thessaloniki's mild coastal climate keeps road conditions pleasant.
Thessaloniki is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Just 75 km south-west of Thessaloniki, Vergina is the ancient capital of Macedonia. Visit the Royal Tombs museum housing Philip II's burial treasures and the ruins of the Palace of Aigai. Veria, 12 km further, offers the historic Barbouta Jewish quarter. Campervan parking is available at the museum entrance.
The westernmost peninsula of Halkidiki lies around 90 km south-east of Thessaloniki. Start at Nea Potidea by the canal and continue to Kallithea with its archaeological Temple of Ammon Zeus. Afytos awaits as a traditional clifftop village overlooking the sea. Campsites with motorhome pitches line the coast throughout the peninsula.
Sithonia, the middle peninsula of Halkidiki, lies roughly 130 km south-east of Thessaloniki. Explore Kavourotrypes beach with its rock formations and the fishing village of Porto Koufo with its sheltered natural harbour. From Vourvourou, boat trips reach the nearby islands. The coastal road is well maintained and easy to navigate in a campervan.
The Meteora monasteries perch on sandstone pillars roughly 170 km west of Thessaloniki. Six of the original 24 monasteries remain active, including Great Meteoron and Varlaam. Kalambaka at the foot of the rocks offers restaurants and motorhome parking. The route via Trikala follows well-maintained roads. A dedicated RV area sits on the edge of Kalambaka for convenient overnight stays.
Reach Skiathos by ferry from Volos, roughly 260 km south-east of Thessaloniki. The island boasts over 60 beaches, including the famous Koukounaries. In Skiathos Town, stroll through the old quarter and visit the Bourtzi peninsula. Leave your campervan safely at the mainland car park by Volos harbour and explore the island by ferry and local bus for a few days.
The Pelion peninsula lies around 300 km south of Thessaloniki, blending mountains and coastline in a compact area. Visit the stone-built villages of Makrinitsa and Tsagarada with their centuries-old plane trees. Mylopotamos beach on the east coast features a natural rock arch. Mountain roads are winding but well surfaced — great for a motorhome adventure. Start the loop in Volos, where parking areas near the harbour offer convenient overnight spots.

Around Thessaloniki you will find campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most are located along the coast towards Halkidiki and offer pitches with electrical hook-ups, sanitary facilities and often direct beach access. There are no campsites within the city itself, but several options in the surrounding area can be reached in under an hour.
In Thessaloniki, motorhomes follow the same parking rules as other vehicles, though size restrictions apply in the narrow city centre. Larger car parks on the outskirts or along the coast are more practical. Overnight sleeping in a vehicle on public roads is not permitted — use designated areas or nearby campsites instead.
The campervan was in incredible condition. It is easy to drive and set up the beds/roof. One of our favourite holidays we’ve ever been on, travelling through northern Spain. The responsiveness and professionalism of the team made everything so easy. Would highly recommend
Very positive experience! Joël shared a lot of details to make the rental easy for us and was professional and kind the whole way through. Even with a small incident we had with the awning, Joël remained very helpful, we really appreciated his patience there.
Very pleasant for the most part. Great customer service at the station. Clean and well kept vehicle, a couple interior damages that were minor inconveniences but otherwise all good. I was disappointed by the lack of online customer support: I tried desperately to extend the rental period, after numerous emails and phone calls I was unsuccessful and only after I returned the vehicle did I get a response. Some form of communication would have helped. Besides the lack of online customer service I had a great experience and can vouch for Roadsurfer Salzburg.
Loved taking this around the island, and such a helpful host!
Alexandra and her friend were excellent guests. Communication was smooth and easy throughout the entire rental, and they took great care of the van, returning it in excellent condition. I would be happy to rent to them again and highly recommend them to any owner.
Great car and super owner. We had an amazing experience with André
