Why choose Stockholm for your road trip

Stockholm — a city worth exploring

Stockholm's Gamla Stan, one of Europe's best-preserved medieval centres, dates back to the 13th century and sits across 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. The Swedish capital rewards curious travellers with a mix of history, design and nature that few cities can match. Wander through the halls of the Vasa Museum, home to the almost fully intact 17th-century warship salvaged from Stockholm's harbour, then cross to Djurgården island to explore Skansen, the world's oldest open-air museum. Architecture fans will appreciate Stockholm City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet takes place each December, while the ABBA Museum on Djurgården offers a lighter, interactive experience. Beyond the city centre, the Stockholm Archipelago stretches east with around 30,000 islands — a paradise for slow-paced exploration by water or road. Uppsala lies just 71 km north, offering its famous cathedral and university town charm, while the coastal city of Norrköping is roughly 170 km to the southwest. Stockholm's layout across islands and waterways means well-maintained bridges and wide roads that suit larger vehicles, though the compact old town is best explored on foot. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Stockholm area, giving you the freedom to set your own pace and discover both the city and the wider Swedish countryside without the constraints of a fixed itinerary.

Best time to visit

Stockholm comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours make it easy to explore the archipelago and city parks well into the evening. The Stockholm Culture Festival in August fills the streets with free concerts and performances, while Midsommar celebrations in late June offer a uniquely Swedish experience worth planning around. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a smart move. Autumn brings golden colours to Djurgården and quieter roads, ideal for a relaxed motorhome trip. Winter visitors can enjoy Stockholm's Christmas markets at Stortorget in Gamla Stan from late November.

71km north 1–3 days

Head 71 km north from Stockholm to Uppsala, Sweden's oldest university city. Visit Uppsala Cathedral, Scandinavia's largest church, and the Linnaeus Garden, created by the famous botanist. Our stay in Koda was easily the highlight of our trip. We took her on a trip to the south and each day was an unforgettable experience. The van itself was easy enough to drive (a bit of elbow grease to turn from a dead standstill but nothing too bad) and was kitted with absolutely everything we could need. All the small details were so appreciated: lots of crockery, a coffee machine with pods, soap & sponges, extra trash bags, extra gas canisters, lots of charging ports, a speaker, the rooftop with ladder, picnic blanket, tables & chair fairy lights… it was perfect. There was even a solar shower which worked perfectly and gave us so much more freedom. We thought the bed would be a bit too small, but honestly we had more than enough space. The owners, Carina & Rafaela, were also fantastic. They made sure we knew all the little tips & tricks before we set off and were just a message away for any questions we had. We truly appreciated your hospitality and kindness and would love to be back for another stay in Koda!

We had an excellent experience renting João’s van through Yescapa. Communication was fantastic from start to finish, and João was always quick to respond and help with anything we needed. Any questions or minor issues we had were sorted out straight away, which made the whole trip stress free. The van was the perfect size for two people travelling around Portugal. It was comfortable, easy to drive, and had everything we needed for our adventure. We would highly recommend João to anyone looking to explore Portugal by van and wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.

Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.
