The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Stockholm's Gamla Stan, one of Europe's best-preserved medieval centres, dates back to the 13th century and sits across 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. The Swedish capital rewards curious travellers with a mix of history, design and nature that few cities can match. Wander through the halls of the Vasa Museum, home to the almost fully intact 17th-century warship salvaged from Stockholm's harbour, then cross to Djurgården island to explore Skansen, the world's oldest open-air museum. Architecture fans will appreciate Stockholm City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet takes place each December, while the ABBA Museum on Djurgården offers a lighter, interactive experience. Beyond the city centre, the Stockholm Archipelago stretches east with around 30,000 islands — a paradise for slow-paced exploration by water or road. Uppsala lies just 71 km north, offering its famous cathedral and university town charm, while the coastal city of Norrköping is roughly 170 km to the southwest. Stockholm's layout across islands and waterways means well-maintained bridges and wide roads that suit larger vehicles, though the compact old town is best explored on foot. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Stockholm area, giving you the freedom to set your own pace and discover both the city and the wider Swedish countryside without the constraints of a fixed itinerary.
Stockholm comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours make it easy to explore the archipelago and city parks well into the evening. The Stockholm Culture Festival in August fills the streets with free concerts and performances, while Midsommar celebrations in late June offer a uniquely Swedish experience worth planning around. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead is a smart move. Autumn brings golden colours to Djurgården and quieter roads, ideal for a relaxed motorhome trip. Winter visitors can enjoy Stockholm's Christmas markets at Stortorget in Gamla Stan from late November.
Stockholm is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Uppsala sits just 70 km north of Stockholm and makes a perfect short trip. Visit Uppsala Cathedral, the largest church in Scandinavia, and the University Botanical Garden. Stop in Sigtuna along the way — Sweden's oldest town with charming lakeside streets. Campervan parking is available near the Fyrisån riverbank.
Stockholm's archipelago begins just east of the city and stretches roughly 60 km to the outer islands. Take the ferry from Stavsnäs to Sandhamn or explore Vaxholm with its historic fortress. Campsites on the larger islands offer motorhome pitches with waterfront views. Book ferry slots in advance during summer months.
Norrköping lies 150 km south-west of Stockholm and surprises with its industrial heritage. Visit the Arbetets Museum in a former textile mill and Kolmården Wildlife Park, Scandinavia's largest zoo. Along the way, stop in Nyköping to see its medieval castle. The E4 motorway offers smooth driving for your campervan.
Örebro sits roughly 190 km west of Stockholm, with its moated Örebro Castle as a striking landmark. Explore Tiveden National Park and its ancient forests and granite boulders — ideal for hiking. Halfway there, Eskilstuna offers pleasant riverside walks. Campsites along Lake Hjälmaren provide pitches with lake views for your motorhome.
Småland lies around 290 km south of Stockholm and is home to Astrid Lindgren's World in Vimmerby. Visit the glassworks in the Kingdom of Crystal, where you can watch glassblowers at work. In Jönköping, on the shores of Lake Vättern, the Match Museum tells an unexpected story. Roads through Småland's forests are well suited to campervan travel.
Gothenburg lies roughly 460 km south-west of Stockholm and is Sweden's second-largest city. Explore the Liseberg amusement park, the Universeum science centre, and the Feskekôrka fish market hall. Along the way, detour to the Göta Canal near Motala and Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake. The E20 takes you through varied landscapes with good facilities for motorhome stops.

Around Stockholm you will find a good selection of campsites suited to both motorhomes and campervans. Many sites sit close to the water or near the archipelago islands, offering electric hook-ups, sanitary facilities, and Wi-Fi. Some campsites are within easy reach of the city centre, while others lie further out in nature for a quieter stay. Most sites are open from May to September, with a few operating year-round.
Stockholm operates environmental zones in the city centre that you should be aware of when driving a motorhome or campervan. Dedicated parking areas on the outskirts offer good public transport links into town. Overnight sleeping in your vehicle is generally not permitted on public car parks — use designated motorhome stops instead. Parking fees vary by zone and time of day, with payment typically via app or meter.
Great experience. Enjoyed the campervan a lot, it was spacious and nice to drive. The owner Diogo was also very helpful and supportive with everything. I recommend
We rented the van for 10 days and had an amazing time! The van isn't isn't new but it's in great mechanical condition and well maintained. We had zero problems and highly recommend!
Carrinha muito viável, confortável e espaçosa. Casa de banho extremamente conviniente. O dono é extremamente simpático e sempre disponível a tirar qualquer dúvida. Experiência a repetir sem dúvida.
We had an outstanding experience renting from Antonio and his family. Antonio and his son Ricardo provided clear, thorough instructions on operating the camper, ensuring we felt confident from the start. Throughout the trip, Ricardo's communication and support were excellent—always responsive and helpful. At the end of the rental, their evaluation was fair, transparent, and reasonable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a smooth camper rental experience!
Absolutely perfect. The vehicle was exactly as described and equipped with everything necessary for a perfect stay. We had a great time and would love to book it again the next time we are in France 🇫🇷
Amazing trip! I travelled with a friend all around the Dolomites in Nicola's van. It was incredible, it couldn't have gone better. The van is fully equipped with everything you need. We did feel a little cold the first night so we got some blankets at a local shop to upgrade the ones available in the van. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pick-up/drop-off location is a bit inconvenient (relatively far away), but for the price and quality, it's definitely worth it. The hosts were super attentive to everything we needed. Thank you!
