The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Split's Diocletian's Palace, built in 305 AD for the Roman emperor's retirement, still forms the living heart of the city where around 3,000 residents call its ancient walls home. Walking through the Peristyle courtyard, you can feel centuries of history layered into every stone. Beyond the palace, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius rises from what was once the emperor's mausoleum, while Marjan Hill offers forested trails and panoramic views across the Adriatic. The Riva waterfront promenade stretches along the harbour, perfect for an evening stroll, and the Croatian Maritime Museum inside Gripe Fortress tells the story of the region's seafaring past. Split also serves as a gateway to the Dalmatian coast — Trogir, a UNESCO-listed town, sits just 27 km to the west, and Omiš, nestled at the mouth of the Cetina River canyon, is only 25 km to the south-east. The coastal roads around Split are well-maintained, though some stretches wind along cliffsides with limited turning space for larger vehicles, so planning your route pays off. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Split area, which means flexible pick-up options and genuine tips on where to go. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to explore Split and the Dalmatian coastline at your own pace.
Split welcomes visitors warmly from spring through to autumn. May and June bring comfortable temperatures ideal for exploring Diocletian's Palace and driving the coastal roads without the busiest summer crowds. The Split Summer Festival, running from mid-July to mid-August, fills the city with open-air theatre, opera, and concerts in historic venues. September is excellent for a campervan trip along the Dalmatian coast, with warm seas and quieter campsites. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes hiring outside peak months even more affordable. Book ahead for July and August — it is the most popular season in Split.
Split is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 27 km west from Split to Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage town on its own small island. Wander through the Kamerlengo Fortress and admire the Cathedral of St Lawrence with its ornate Radovan Portal. The coastal road is straightforward, and you will find campervan-friendly parking near the old town bridge. A perfect short escape.
Drive 25 km south-east from Split to Omiš, where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic. Explore the Mirabella Fortress perched above the town and try a rafting trip through the Cetina canyon. Campsites along the river offer shaded pitches with hook-ups. The road follows the coast and is well-suited for motorhomes of all sizes.
Follow the Adriatic coastline 150 km south-east from Split to Dubrovnik. Stop at Makarska for its pebble beaches and the Biokovo Nature Park, then continue through the Pelješac peninsula to taste local wines in Potomje. Dubrovnik's city walls are a must-walk. Plan your parking in advance — spaces for larger vehicles fill up quickly near the old town.
Travel 160 km north-west from Split to Zadar along the scenic coastal highway. Visit the Krka National Park waterfalls near Šibenik on the way, and stop at Primošten, a charming town on a small peninsula. In Zadar, the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation are unique waterfront installations. Campervan parking is available near the old town walls.
Head 270 km north-west from Split to Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia's most famous natural wonder. Along the way, explore the fortress town of Knin and the Krka waterfalls. Plitvice's 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls require a full day. Several campsites near the park entrance offer spacious pitches with full facilities for motorhomes.
Set off 400 km north-west from Split towards the Istrian peninsula for a week-long coastal adventure. Pass through Zadar and Rijeka before reaching Rovinj, with its colourful harbourfront, and Pula, home to a remarkably preserved Roman amphitheatre. The area around Split offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Along the coast, you will find sites with sea views and direct beach access, while options slightly inland provide quieter, shaded pitches. Most campsites in the Split region feature electrical hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, and Wi-Fi. Several also have dedicated service areas for waste disposal and fresh water refills, making longer stays comfortable and convenient.
Parking a motorhome or campervan in Split requires a bit of planning, as the old town area has restricted access for larger vehicles. Designated parking zones on the outskirts offer the best options. Overnight parking in public areas is generally not permitted within the city centre, so using dedicated facilities or nearby campsites is recommended. Always check signage for height and length restrictions before parking. Several well-located options make it easy to reach the centre on foot or by local bus.
Great communication from Gladys and great van! Thanks for making our trip seamless!
Nice car, friendly and helpful people
The process was simple and informative. Once we had decided from the many great options, we received a quick response. Our host was easily reachable and answered our questions to ensure the best experience on our trip. We also felt secure knowing insurance was included. We made a few adjustments to our trip, and we were easily accommodated by the owner. Our trip was beautiful, and well-equipped with everything we needed on the go. It was a lovely experience to explore and sleep where we wanted to ensure we were ready for our adventure the next day.
Nelson is 5*, great guy and great renting experience.
incredibly friendly and took the time to explain how everything worked, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable from the start. The camper van was a pleasure to drive and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. He was also available 24/7 to help with any questions and recommended some amazing routes around the island. As first-time camper van travellers, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we would absolutely do it again. It was truly an unforgettable adventure.
The camper was exactly as expected, it was clean and everything worked as it should. It drove well and was surprisingly economical considering its size. The booking process was easy but collection gave a few challenges. The renters location is wrong in the listing as there are two Sauzets in south west France. Coupled with the renter mistakenly not delivering the camper to the correct address meant we were a day late starting our trip. A refund for the missing day was immediately agreed. In all an easy experience once the pickup location was cleared up.
