The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Split's Diocletian's Palace, built in 305 AD for the Roman emperor's retirement, still forms the living heart of the city where around 3,000 residents call its ancient walls home. Walking through the Peristyle courtyard, you can feel centuries of history layered into every stone. Beyond the palace, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius rises from what was once the emperor's mausoleum, while Marjan Hill offers forested trails and panoramic views across the Adriatic. The Riva waterfront promenade stretches along the harbour, perfect for an evening stroll, and the Croatian Maritime Museum inside Gripe Fortress tells the story of the region's seafaring past. Split also serves as a gateway to the Dalmatian coast — Trogir, a UNESCO-listed town, sits just 27 km to the west, and Omiš, nestled at the mouth of the Cetina River canyon, is only 25 km to the south-east. The coastal roads around Split are well-maintained, though some stretches wind along cliffsides with limited turning space for larger vehicles, so planning your route pays off. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Split area, which means flexible pick-up options and genuine tips on where to go. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to explore Split and the Dalmatian coastline at your own pace.
Split welcomes visitors warmly from spring through to autumn. May and June bring comfortable temperatures ideal for exploring Diocletian's Palace and driving the coastal roads without the busiest summer crowds. The Split Summer Festival, running from mid-July to mid-August, fills the city with open-air theatre, opera, and concerts in historic venues. September is excellent for a campervan trip along the Dalmatian coast, with warm seas and quieter campsites. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes hiring outside peak months even more affordable. Book ahead for July and August — it is the most popular season in Split.
Split is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Trogir sits just 27 km west of Split, its UNESCO-listed old town built on a small island connected by bridges. Wander through narrow lanes to the Cathedral of St Lawrence and climb Kamerlengo Fortress for coastal views. Park your campervan on the mainland side, as the island centre has restricted vehicle access.
The 60 km drive southeast from Split along the coastal road leads to Makarska, nestled beneath the Biokovo mountain range. Visit Nugal Beach and the Biokovo Skywalk at 1,228 metres for panoramic views. Campsites along the Makarska Riviera offer seaside pitches with views across to the islands of Brač and Hvar.
Zadar lies 155 km northwest of Split via the A1 motorway. The Sea Organ on the waterfront creates music from wave movement, while the Sun Salutation lights up at sunset. Explore the 9th-century Church of St Donatus and the Roman Forum. Motorhome parking is available on the outskirts with good bus connections to the old town.
The 180 km coastal drive southeast from Split to Dubrovnik follows one of Europe's most scenic routes. Stop in Ston to walk its medieval walls and sample oysters from Mali Ston Bay. In Dubrovnik, walk the famous city walls and explore the old town. Note the brief border crossing through Bosnia-Herzegovina at Neum along the way.
Plitvice Lakes National Park lies around 240 km northwest of Split and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sixteen terraced lakes are connected by waterfalls, including the 78-metre Veliki Slap. Wooden boardwalks wind through the landscape. Campsites such as Camping Korana sit near the park entrance with pitches suitable for campervans and motorhomes alike.
Istria lies around 390 km northwest of Split and offers a different side of Croatia. Visit the Roman amphitheatre in Pula, the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, and the medieval hilltop town of Motovun. The Istrian coast is known for truffles, olive oil, and excellent wineries. Numerous campsites along the coastline offer spacious pitches with sea views for a relaxing end to your road trip.

Around Split, you will find campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most are located along the coast south and west of the city, offering pitches with electrical hook-ups, sanitary facilities, and often direct access to the sea. Several sites include restaurants, mini-markets, and sports facilities. The area surrounding Split also has smaller, quieter sites inland with mountain views, giving you a range of options for your stay.
Split has specific parking rules for motorhomes and campervans. The old town is closed to larger vehicles, so parking on the outskirts is recommended. Overnight sleeping in vehicles on public roads is not permitted, but some car parks offer designated overnight spaces. Pay attention to height restriction signs, especially at underground car parks near the centre.
All went well!
Ok
We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
Todo genial. Gracias
