Santander's Palacio de la Magdalena, a royal summer residence built in 1912, sits on a peninsula overlooking the Bay of Biscay and remains one of northern Spain's most recognisable landmarks. The city wraps around a sweeping bay, with the Playa del Sardinero stretching along the northern shore and the Centro Botín — a contemporary art centre designed by Renzo Piano — anchoring the waterfront promenade. History lovers can explore the Museo de Prehistoria y Arqueología de Cantabria, while the Catedral de Santander, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1941, offers a quieter moment in the old quarter. Bilbao is roughly 100 km to the east along the coast, and the Picos de Europa National Park lies about 150 km to the southwest, making Santander an ideal base for longer journeys through Cantabria and the Green Spain corridor. The coastal roads here are scenic but manageable, with wide routes connecting beach towns and mountain villages. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa means you can pick up a vehicle directly from a local owner in the Santander area, often at more flexible times and prices than traditional agencies. Whether you want a compact campervan for the coast or a larger motorhome for a family trip into the mountains, the peer-to-peer model lets you find exactly the right fit for your route.
Santander comes alive in July and August, when the Festival Internacional de Santander fills the city with music, dance and theatre performances across historic venues. September brings the Feria de Santiago, a lively celebration with open-air events along the bay. Summer is the busiest season for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead gives you the widest choice from local owners. Spring and early autumn are excellent for quieter coastal drives, with mild temperatures and more availability at campsites near Santander. Winter rewards visitors with dramatic Atlantic skies and fewer crowds at landmarks like the Palacio de la Magdalena.
Santander is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 35 km west along the coast to Comillas, home to Gaudí's El Capricho and the Pontifical University. Stop at Playa de Oyambre for a walk on one of Cantabria's finest sandy stretches. Campervan parking is available near the town centre, making it easy to explore on foot.
Drive 75 km southwest to Potes, the gateway to the Picos de Europa. Cross the Desfiladero de la Hermida gorge and visit the Monasterio de Santo Toribio de Liébana. Mountain roads are well-maintained but winding, so a compact campervan is the most comfortable choice here.
Follow the coast 150 km east to San Sebastián, passing through Castro Urdiales and the fishing port of Getaria along the way. Enjoy pintxos in the Parte Vieja and take in views from Monte Urgull. Motorhome parking areas are well signposted on the outskirts of the city.
Travel 190 km southwest to León, crossing the Cantabrian Mountains via the A-67. Visit the Catedral de León with its famous stained-glass windows and the Casa Botines designed by Gaudí. Campsites with full hook-ups are available just outside the city walls.
Head 280 km west to Oviedo, exploring the Asturian coastline along the way. Stop at Llanes for its colourful harbour and the Bufones de Pría blowholes. In Oviedo, visit the pre-Romanesque churches of Santa María del Naranco. Coastal campsites offer pitches with sea views.
Drive 390 km south through Burgos and into the Ribera del Duero wine region. Explore the Catedral de Burgos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then continue to Peñafiel and its hilltop castle housing the Museo Provincial del Vino. Motorhome-friendly wineries offer tastings and overnight stays.

Santander and its surrounding coastline offer a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Along the bay and nearby beaches you will find sites with electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Inland options closer to the Cantabrian foothills provide a quieter setting with green spaces and walking trails. Most sites are open from spring through to autumn, with several operating year-round for winter travellers exploring the Santander area.
Parking a motorhome or campervan in Santander is straightforward if you plan ahead. The city has designated areas for larger vehicles, and overnight parking is permitted in specific zones. Street parking in the centre is limited in height and length, so we recommend using dedicated facilities on the outskirts. Always check local signage for time restrictions and height barriers before parking.
Fantastic experience renting Dirk’s camper van! Pick-up and drop-off were exactly as we wished—very flexible both in time and location, which we really appreciated. The van was perfect for four adults: spacious, spotlessly clean, and excellently equipped with everything we needed and more. It was also very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. Dirk provided a very handy e-book with all the essential information about the van, which made everything even easier.A pure pleasure from beginning to end—we would definitely rent from Dirk again!
Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.
We had the best time getting to know Portugal with Marta and Renato’s beautiful van. It had everything we needed to enjoy a very comfortable trip. The van was extremely well designed inside and out and ran very smoothly throughout the whole trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to book it again but this time for much longer! Marta was a very helpful, kind and responsive host. 5 stars all round :)
Everything went perfectly. The process of handing over and accepting the motorhome was easy. The attitude towards the motorhome was very good, and the driving experience was evident. I recommend
