Santander's Palacio de la Magdalena, a royal summer residence built in 1912, sits on a peninsula overlooking the Bay of Biscay and remains one of northern Spain's most recognisable landmarks. The city wraps around a sweeping bay, with the Playa del Sardinero stretching along the northern shore and the Centro Botín — a contemporary art centre designed by Renzo Piano — anchoring the waterfront promenade. History lovers can explore the Museo de Prehistoria y Arqueología de Cantabria, while the Catedral de Santander, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1941, offers a quieter moment in the old quarter. Bilbao is roughly 100 km to the east along the coast, and the Picos de Europa National Park lies about 150 km to the southwest, making Santander an ideal base for longer journeys through Cantabria and the Green Spain corridor. The coastal roads here are scenic but manageable, with wide routes connecting beach towns and mountain villages. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa means you can pick up a vehicle directly from a local owner in the Santander area, often at more flexible times and prices than traditional agencies. Whether you want a compact campervan for the coast or a larger motorhome for a family trip into the mountains, the peer-to-peer model lets you find exactly the right fit for your route.
Santander comes alive in July and August, when the Festival Internacional de Santander fills the city with music, dance and theatre performances across historic venues. September brings the Feria de Santiago, a lively celebration with open-air events along the bay. Summer is the busiest season for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead gives you the widest choice from local owners. Spring and early autumn are excellent for quieter coastal drives, with mild temperatures and more availability at campsites near Santander. Winter rewards visitors with dramatic Atlantic skies and fewer crowds at landmarks like the Palacio de la Magdalena.
Santander is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Comillas is just 30 km west of Santander and home to El Capricho, a building designed by Antoni Gaudí, and the Pontificia Universidad. The coastal road passes through fishing villages like Suances, where campervan parking is easy near the harbour. A relaxed one- to two-day trip with plenty of photo stops along the way.
San Vicente de la Barquera sits 75 km south-west of Santander, with a medieval bridge framing views of the Picos de Europa. Stop in Santillana del Mar along the way to visit the replica of the Altamira cave paintings. Coastal parking spots are plentiful, making this a comfortable two- to three-day motorhome trip.
Bilbao lies 110 km east of Santander along the A-8 motorway. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a must-see, and the Casco Viejo is packed with pintxo bars. Break the journey in Castro Urdiales to see its Gothic church perched above the harbour. Campsites around Bilbao offer solid facilities, making this a rewarding three- to four-day campervan trip.
The Picos de Europa begin roughly 155 km south-west of Santander. From Potes you can hike into the heart of the national park, and the Fuente Dé cable car takes you up to 1,823 metres. Mountain roads are well-surfaced but narrow, so a campervan handles them more easily than a large motorhome. Three to five days give you time for trails and mountain villages.
Oviedo is 200 km west of Santander and serves as a gateway to the Asturian coastline. Visit the pre-Romanesque church of Santa María del Naranco and try sidra in the Calle Gascona. From there, the coastal road leads to Llanes and Ribadesella, where cliffs meet sandy beaches. Campsites along this stretch offer pitches with sea views – ideal for a five- to seven-day trip.
Santiago de Compostela is 390 km west of Santander and the famous endpoint of the Camino de Santiago. The Cathedral of Santiago is an architectural masterpiece, and the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the way, drive through the green landscapes of Galicia with stops in Lugo to see its Roman walls. Campsites and service areas are well spaced along the route – allow six to seven days.

Some sit right beside Cantabrian beaches, while others are set slightly inland among green hills. Here are some recommended campsites near Santander.
Santander has several parking areas suitable for campervans and motorhomes. The city centre operates timed parking zones, so it is best to use designated large-vehicle car parks. Overnight stays in your vehicle are generally not permitted on public car parks – use official service areas or campsites instead. Here are some parking options in and around Santander.
It was our first time in campervan and we got everything we needed. The car was comfortable, economical and fully equipped. We spent an unforgettable week during the total eclipse, although it was almost impossible to find available space on camping sites at that time. But the car batteries did great job so we could park even without the electricity access. The car used 8,9 l/100 km even though we almost didn't use highways. Carlos was very nice and helpful, he made our trip convenient and safe. We definitely recommend Carlos and his vehicle!
There was a small hiccup at first with the reservation, but it was solved quickly and from there on it was total bliss. The motorhome is absolutely top-notch, and the service was really warm and friendly. Despite the language barrier (we didn't speak much Spanish and they didn't speak much English), everything went very smoothly. So there's no need to worry if you don't speak their language — they have the means and experience to handle it. At the handover they walked us through the motorhome and gave us some camping tips and tricks, which made our trip very enjoyable. A big plus was the air conditioner in the living quarters.
Fantastic Family Experience with a Wonderful Host! We are a family of four and could not be more satisfied with our experience. The owner, Martial, was exceptionally helpful throughout the entire process. Before booking, he answered all of our questions promptly and consistently catered to our needs. During our trip, he went out of his way to check in on us and offered fantastic local advice and recommendations on places to visit. The pickup and drop-off processes were both seamless and efficient. The van itself is in excellent condition, extremely well-maintained, spotless, and fully equipped with everything you might need for a great trip—with practically everything working perfectly. We were also deeply touched by Martial’s kindness in picking us up at the airport, which made the start of our trip so much easier.
We had a fantastic family road trip in Carlos’s motorhome, visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Schwarzwald, and Europa-Park. The vehicle had a few minor scratches from previous rentals and was due for a routine service, but Carlos assured us upfront not to worry about them, and it didn't affect our trip at all. The motorhome was well-equipped—having the onboard air grill was an especially nice touch! Pickup and drop-off were quick, straightforward, and hassle-free. We highly recommend Carlos and his motorhome.
The vehicle picture are old and today's vehicle condition are quite different; there are signs of rust on the bodywork and early signs of mold on the inner tent of the upper bed; few scratches to the vehicle are present but they do no demine its functionalities. Despite the fact that everything works, It has been frustrating to pull and push the rear seat back especially at the beginning of the journey, then we get it right with the experience; I personally recommend having the fold/unfold mechanism inspected and fixed. Anyhow, it allowed us to have a wonderful vacation and the robust engine never left us unsupported. Antonio is very supportive and responsive; he helped us with the logistics and gave us a few tips to start the travel.
This was our first experience with a camper. Aurora and Cristian were very helpful and the rental process was very easy and fast. The camper is quite old, but is very well maintained and fully functional. I would recommend this camper. We didn't had any issues during our trip.
