Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Queensland

Queensland — a region worth exploring

Queensland's Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the coast, making it the largest coral reef system on Earth and a defining feature of any road trip through this vast Australian state. From the golden beaches of the Gold Coast to the ancient Daintree Rainforest near Cape Tribulation, Queensland offers an extraordinary range of landscapes to explore at your own pace. The drive from Brisbane to Cairns covers roughly 1,700 kilometres of coastal highway, passing through charming towns like Bundaberg, Airlie Beach and Townsville along the way. Inland, the Atherton Tablelands rise to over 1,000 metres, offering cooler temperatures, crater lakes and rolling farmland — a welcome contrast to the tropical coastline. Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, sits just off the coast near Hervey Bay, around 290 kilometres north of Brisbane, and is a must-visit for nature lovers. Queensland's well-maintained roads and generous network of rest stops make it ideal for campervan and motorhome travel, whether you are hugging the coast or heading west into the outback. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Queensland, giving you access to a wide variety of vehicles suited to everything from weekend escapes to extended touring adventures. The peer-to-peer model means more choice, more flexibility and a more personal way to hit the road.

Best time to visit

Queensland enjoys a tropical to subtropical climate, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. The dry season from May to October is especially popular in the north, with warm days and clear skies ideal for exploring Cairns and the Whitsundays. In August, the Ekka — Brisbane's Royal Queensland Show — draws visitors from across the state. Winter months (June to August) are peak season, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa early gives you the best pick of vehicles at competitive peer-to-peer prices. The wet season from November to April brings lush green landscapes and fewer crowds in Queensland, perfect for travellers who prefer quieter roads and lower hire costs.

Queensland's main coastal route, the Bruce Highway (Highway 1), runs over 1,600 kilometres from Brisbane to Cairns and is toll-free for its entire length. In the Brisbane metropolitan area, some motorways such as the Gateway Motorway and Logan Motorway use electronic tolling — a linkt or e-tag pass is the easiest way to pay. Speed limits for motorhomes over 4.5 tonnes are generally capped at 100 km/h on open roads, while lighter campervans follow standard car limits. Rest areas with free overnight parking are well signposted along major highways, making long-distance travel in Queensland straightforward and budget-friendly.

Feeling right at home Traveling across Portugal with Koda was a perfect, unique, and wonderful experience ☺️ Carina and Rafaela met us right at the airport and explained everything about the van—covering every detail clearly and effectively. We had never taken an off-the-cuff trip like this before; without any set plans, we drove all the way to Sagres, navigating easily through narrow roads, campsites, and stunning beaches 😍 Its compact size makes it comfortable to drive almost immediately, allowing for effortless maneuvering even on narrow roads, whether driving uphill or on light off-road terrain. The van is fully equipped: it has kitchenware, a sink, a convenient handheld shower, and even a solar shower, plus two camping chairs and an easy-to-assemble table. The bed is incredibly comfortable, and when not in use, it converts into a small bench. It was easy and delightful to feel right at home during this vacation; we can’t wait to return to Portugal to explore the north with Koda 🧡

Our experience with Ivan and Tamara was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. They were incredibly kind, friendly, and helpful, and supported us with many things throughout our trip. The motorhome was excellent, extremely clean, comfortable, and fully equipped with everything we needed. Ivan and Tamara also kindly picked us up from the airport and took us back at the end of our trip. They and their family welcomed us so warmly that we immediately felt at home. This was much more than just renting a motorhome—we arrived as guests and left feeling that we had made wonderful new friends in Switzerland. It was an unforgettable experience, and we would definitely rent from Ivan and Tamara again without hesitation. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for an excellent motorhome and genuinely caring hosts. Thank you, Ivan and Tamara, for your kindness, hospitality, and friendship. We hope to see you and your lovely family again soon!
